Why does ArchiveEdge physically collect the pins?

We recently bulk traded for an entire collection. Some pins may become part of the ArchiveEdge reference collection, while others will be rehomed through GoExplore.

During the review, we found a 2007 Star Wars Stitch Invasion pin and compared it directly with the example already preserved in the archive. The significant differences gave us pause, so we examined both pins more closely under magnification.

The newly acquired pin was ultimately identified as a scrapper/counterfeit.

This is exactly why building a physical reference archive matters. Photographs and online listings can only tell us so much. Having authentic examples available for direct comparison allows us to study the smallest differences, document what we find, and help preserve the history of Disney pin collecting.

A Disney pin series you may not know about…
These pins were originally available only to guests who purchased hand-painted animation cels at Disney-MGM Studios—today’s Disney’s Hollywood Studios.
Typically marked as Limited Editions of 1,500 or 2,000, questions still remain about whether every planned pin in the series was actually produced one of these cels or pins?

A–Z Event Set — Complete
All 30 mystery box alphabet pins from the A–Z Disney Pin Trading Event are now represented in the ArchiveEdge collection.
We completed the full set through trading during the event — mostly while waiting in line for the event trading boards and our opportunities to trade for APs and PPs.
A fun side project while documenting another piece of Disney pin history.
30 pins. A through Z. Complete and archived.

A piece of Disney pin history from before pin trading became a phenomenon.

This original 1997 Disney Store Hercules display promoted the film’s Sneak Preview Weekend and its Limited Edition Collector Pin Set.
What makes pieces like this so special to preserve isn’t simply the pins themselves. It’s the original context—the display, artwork, promotional material, and even the commemorative Sneak Preview Weekend ticket dated June 22, 1997.
Disney Store displays and props are coveted pieces of Disney history, and we’re incredibly fortunate to preserve this original 1997 Hercules display in the Archive, complete with the collector pins and commemorative ticket.
This isn’t a recreation or simply documentation of the release. This is the surviving display itself, preserved nearly 30 years later—a fascinating example of Disney pin collecting before modern Disney pin trading took shape.
A truly special addition to the Archive.

🎭 NEW TO THE ARCHIVE — 2020 Hidden Disney Carnival Masks! 🎭
Archive Edge just added the complete 2020 Carnival Masks Hidden Disney pin sets from both Walt Disney World AND Disneyland — including the hard-to-find completers! 🔥
The 2020 era is an especially interesting piece of Disney pin history. With COVID disrupting the parks and Hidden Disney releases, pins from this period can be surprisingly scarce — and assembling complete sets with their completers is no easy task.
Now both coasts are together, complete and preserved in the Archive. 🗃️✨
Another piece of Disney pin history documented. 🔎📌

📌 ARCHIVE EDGE — D23 DAY 2: DEC 📌
Saturday at D23 meant another huge round of releases from the Disney Employee Center (DEC) — and we’re adding one of every single pin we picked up into the Archive Edge collection. 🔍✨
There were a LOT of standouts in this release, including some pins I was seriously excited to finally see in person.
But the hunt isn’t over… 👀
🎯 3 major ISOs still missing 🖼️ ALL of the framed sets still needed
And those frames? Yeah… those are going to be the painful ones. 😂
The goal is simple: preserve as complete a record of these releases as possible — one pin at a time.
D23 Day 2 — DEC. Let’s see how close we can get. 🔎

Preserving DEC at D23 📌
One of every pin released Friday through the Disney Employee Center at D23 — brought together into one collection and preserved.
These pins were created for a specific place and moment in Disney collecting history. Our goal is to keep that moment together — physically — long after D23 is over.
Not just collected. Preserved.
Another piece of D23 history enters the ArchiveEdge collection.
