"Architecture has to create places where everybody can belong. Architects have the skill set to listen and respond, as well as to solve problems. I think that’s important. We know through our work that a mix of different elements is part of creating a sense of community, but ultimately, we must create places that have identity and aren’t boring, places that people really love and want to come to. I think that’s how we have an impact."

Today, the Boston Society for Architecture (BSA) and the Boston/Northeast Hub of the Carbon Leadership Forum (CLF) released a comprehensive report and innovative board game addressing obstacles and opportunities for decarbonizing concrete. Following a year-long process of interviews, surveys, and stakeholder focus groups, the report concludes that the obstacles to this key climate objective lie not in technology or engineering, but in the design and construction process. Through a simple game format the report provides guidance for tackling the challenges inherent in each step of the design-build process and provides solutions that are replicable and applicable in regions around the world.

The report is available for FREE download on the BSA website: https://www.architects.org/news/decarbonizing-concrete-bsa-clf-report-yields-innovative-board-game

If the industry is successful in decarbonizing concrete, we will have eliminated 8% of global greenhouse gas
emissions. According to the International Energy Agency, emissions from cement alone must fall by an average
of 4% annually through 2030 in order to limit global temperature rise to 1.5°C.

This report was made possible with funding from Jampart Charitable Trust.

“Sustainability often transforms into a luxury that disproportionately affects disinvested communities. The pursuit of sustainability cannot be divorced from these broader challenges. To be truly inclusive, sustainability initiatives need to address and redress the larger systemic issues faced by these communities.”

Join us this Thursday for “Conversations in Architecture”, a monthly, in-person discussion of real-world challenges in the built environment to advance the knowledge and expertise of the entire membership community and better serve our clients.

Elizabeth Christoforreti of Supernormal will lead the discussion.

The conversation will focus on an unprecedented project for Supernormal that combines architecture—design for an additional dwelling unit tested across modular, panelized, and stick assemblies—with the design of financing and policy to enable these units to take root and scale in middle-income communities. Issues on the table include assessing construction type and vetting which aspects of the project are optimal for off-site vs. on-site labor, and design optimization for multi-generational households.

Attendance is free. Register here: https://ow.ly/9x9x50Qyv1E

“I find that equitable spaces come from equitable processes,” says Sam Batchelor AIA, 2024 BSA/AIA President and partner at designLAB architects. “That means that we need to ensure that a broad range of perspectives are represented in design. We’re not able to design around our own blind-spots, so we work to create processes that bring a diversity of experiences to each situation.”
