Today in 1787, Richard Henry Dana Senior was born. Dana Sr was a close friend and confident of Bryant, writing in 1845,

"Let me say in plain honesty, and without any mere wish to please you, that my looking over your poems afresh has served to raise you higher than ever in my mind. The truth of your language, the felicities of phrase, the eye and feeling from nature, the tenderness and exceeding beauty, were always present with me. But I am more than ever before impressed with the number of the pieces that ascend into grandeur of thought, into the higher order of powers."

Take only photos, leave only footprints...

"A path! what beauty does a path bestow
Even on the dreariest wild! its savage nooks
Seem homelike where accustomed footsteps go,
And the grim rock puts on familiar looks.
The tangled swamp, through which a pathway strays,
Becomes a garden with strange flowers and sprays."

Hanging in the parlor, this lamp was bought by Bryant in Morocco. Each cup would be filled with oil, a wick added, and lit. The Hand of Fatima (hamsa, also known as the Hand of Mary and the Hand of Miriam) motif is a symbol of protection across many cultures.

The Homestead is never static! Pictured below is the sitting area of the servants quarters as featured in the October 1983 issue of Antiques. At that time, the room was used to display items Bryant purchased on his trip to the Middle East in 1853. Have you seen the photograph of Bryant in his kaftan and fez on display in the Homestead today?

A fan of The Illiad and the Odyssey since childhood, as an older adult William Cullen Bryant undertook translating both epics into blank verse versions as a side-project, often worked on during the summers he spent at the Homestead. The National Quarterly Review said of his translation of the Odyssey - "In his Odyssey Mr Bryant is less literal than in his Iliad but decidedly more faithful to the spirit of the original."

While most photos and busts of WCB show him as an older gentleman, he was young when he wrote and published his first poetry. This image, courtesy of the New York Public Library's digital collections, shows Bryant at 31 - which was still 14 years after his first poem was published!

"Let in through all the trees
Come the strange rays; the forest depths are bright;
Their sunny colored foliage, in the breeze,
Twinkles, like beams of light."

"While, swaying to the sudden breeze, ye fling
Your nuts to earth, and the brisk squirrel comes
To gather them, and barks with childish glee,
And scampers with them to his hollow oak."

Any visitor to the Homestead these days can hear the irregular thunk-thunk-thunk of acorns hitting the roof. Our gallant oak is flinging their fruit with abandon towards the ground. Come for a tour today, tomorrow, or Monday (11am & 1pm), then enjoy a stroll on our trails. Just watch out for the flying acorns!

My great great grandmother's autograph book has the autograph's of William Cullen Bryant, son-in-law Parke Godwin, daughter, Fannie Godwin, and E. Lenore Godwin. My GG Grandmother, Elsie Wright Cottrell lived in Middlefield, MA, about 15 miles from the Bryant homestead in Cummington. If you are interested, I could bring the book up for you to look at some time.
