When Silence Rises From Earth: 4'33" (More Than Cage Imagined Mix) by IR :: Sankara Future Dub Resurgence

“When Silence Rises from Earth” is filmed by Ugandan cinematographer Joshua Black-Alibet. It documents a ceremony that was performed at the end of 2020 by IR::Sankara Future Dub Resurgence. The ceremony takes place at the Dub Museum in Kampala, Uganda. It centers around the ritual preparation of a djembe drum, but its focus is on the future – our anti-colonial futures. The theme of silence is key to the film’s soundtrack and is partly inspired by John Cage’s 4’33”.

CCAM Sound Art Series: Mendi + Keith Obadike LIFT premiere

"LIFT (Listening Skies) is a music and video work. It is a meditation on both the history of aerial photography and the one hundred year old song often called the Black National Anthem, Lift Every Voice and Sing. In this work, Mendi + Keith were particularly inspired by the aerial images captured by the African-American engineer Shelby Jacobs’ camera system aboard Apollo 6 spacecraft in 1968 and the celestial references found in the melody and text composed by brothers J. Rosamond Johnson and James Weldon Johnson.

The online premiere screening of Mendi + Keith Obadike's new work LIFT co-presented with Artspace New Haven
