Because of these men and women we have IKARE and the National Khmer Legacy Museum.

While many of them are no longer with us their vision drives the work we do everyday.

05/11/2021

As the Covid 19 pause is coming to an end IKARE and the @NationalKhmerLegacyMuseum will be getting busy in promoting the best of Cambodian again.

Please help us because a genocide survivor is a success story even inspite of the worst of humanity!

Over 1.5 million people around the world today know Cambodia as more than the Killing Fields.

In 2017 Mr. Ouk Van Day's work became a symbol of hope for the National Khmer Legacy Museum's mission: Turning things people forget, throw away, or been destroyed into a new life and legacy of learning.

The First Dinosaur Fossil Was Named Before We Had A Word For Dinosaurs

Happy New Year from the National Khmer Legacy Museum!

For 2021 the museum has received a special request to gather facts and evidence that could rewrite the history of when Dinosaurs was first discovered by humans.

The Museum is also working with the Center For Genocide And Holocaust Studies of the UofM to make recommendations to the MN Board of Education to include the Khmer people in the 2021-2031 Social Studies curriculum on genocide studies.

Congratulations to Mark Bochsler and his loving wife Sandra Leuba for their dedication to the Surviving Bokator documentary.

They've raised some funds to continue this once lost martial art of the Cambodian people. Despite the Covid19 challenges they persisted to keep this lost art alive.

The National Khmer Legacy Museum is proud to be a part of this amazing project.

Siem Reap’s Cambodian Cultural Village to shut due to Covid

As some of our supporters know, Covid19-20 and lack of funding resource have forced the IKARE to unschedule all public programming, including our Museum activities. We no longer have a Physical museum and is exploring new channels to educate and promote the Khmer People and Culture everywhere!

The National Khmer Legacy Museum extends our condolences to all Cambodian cultural centers everywhere during these difficult moments.

However, we are a People with resilience. If we can survive a genocide, we can survive anything!

40 Years After Khmer Rouge Rule, Cambodia Grapples With Legacy

As Cambodian Americans we must pay close attention to distinguish a fight against injustices and a movement that can kill millions like what happened in Cambodia between 1975-1979.

This is not a legacy we are proud of but a legacy that shows we ought to know better by now.

The legacy we wish the world to know of is that the Khmer people are innovators and builders who are resilient even during the worst of times.

The people of SE Asia in general are proud and stunned by the beauty of the Angkor Wat. During the French colonization many foreigners regarded Cambodia as the Jewel of SE Asia. The French proudly pronounced Cambodia as the Paris of SE Asia.

As in the example below, even today, the people of Vietnam and all over the region proudly attach themselves to the glory, beauty, and might of the largest religious monument in the world.

In the old days and Motherland this time of year meant rain, mud, and dangerous road condition.

Since the monks were unable to receive offerings of food, local villagers would show their good deeds by bringing food for 15 days.

This morning, please join IKARE and our team as we take part at Watt Munisotaram for Benda Day 11 as we continue the tradition of good deeds.

About the Festival of Nations 2021. Shooting for the future.

https://www.facebook.com/216201378398960/posts/3602320613120336/

Dear Friends, Donors & Supporters,

Since the Cambodian community began its resettlement in Minnesota in the late 1970s and early 80s, we've not missed a year as a participant in the annual #festivalofnations where tens of thousands of students, teachers, and people of different ethnicities go to celebrate the beauty of their differences in a 4-day weekend in May.

For almost 40 years Mr. Koy, Chhoeurn and Mr. Keo, Chhan passionately represented all Cambodians living in MN through the presentation of Cambodian arts, food, and stories to the non-Khmer communities.

In 2015 the legacy was transferred to Mr. Kosol Sek, the current Managing Director of IKARE and National Khmer Legacy Museum.

It is with a heavy heart and optimism that we must announce the unscheduling of the 2021 Festival of Nations due to the continued uncertainty of the CoronaVirus and safety concerns with social distancing.

The IKARE wishes to extend our gratitude to the staff and volunteers of the Festival and look forward to 2022 and beyond for continued fun, food. and fabulous festivities.

It's not possible to talk about Cambodian American legacy and the Khmer people without also including who helped to resettle us in Minnesota.

https://www.facebook.com/175934722454712/posts/3060902557291233/

We've been the host of the Festival of Nations-Saint Paul, MN for 88 years, and although we couldn't gather this year, messages like these warm our hearts at home 💙 Thank you for sharing this statement with us, Kosol Sek!

The Cambodian community initially became involved with the Festival due to the International Institute of Minnesota resettling Cambodian people in the late 70s and early 80s. "When the first wave of Cambodians immigrated to Minnesota, they resettled in St. Paul," Sek says. "This was where a new life began for most Cambodian Americans and where liberty began for a population who had lost family, childhood, and growing years. Many Khmer refugees attended ESL classes at the Institute and some had acquired U.S. citizenship as a result."

Our Story

We didn’t start out as a museum but a dream for recognition by the United States for the sacrifices made by the Khmer and SE Asian veterans during the “secret war” of SE Asia. Following a passage of U.S. Senate SR 462 in 2014, the dream expanded to include promoting the 2500 years of stories and history of the Khmer and SE Asians.

In 2018, The National Khmer Legacy Museum & Performing Arts Center evolved to become a center for educating the general public about the importance for peace and unity in a diverse multi-ethnic society.
