Worth Ryder Art Gallery and the Department of Art Practice are thrilled to announce “Missed America: Half Massed,” a group exhibition featuring multidisciplinary artworks from students in UC Berkeley Art Practice Dept. Global Perspectives in Contemporary Art Class.

Beginning with Ronald Reagan in 1985, each incoming American president has selected an artwork to display at their Inauguration, using it to symbolize the aspirations of the new administration. The works are intended as messages to the people, sometimes readily legible, sometimes more coded, and sometimes conveying meanings that are not immediately apparent. At times, selected artworks have contradicted the administration’s stated ideals or revealed its covert intentions. With the 2026 midterm elections looming, each student in the class created an artwork representing their hopes or perhaps warnings for what they wish or perhaps dread the next administration might bring. Some works question the possibilities of hope, others image pathways for growth and unity.

Seven-channel interactive media installation with screens, stools, gyroscopes, computers, wall graphics and speakers, 12 min
Dimensions variable

Water Council is an interactive installation by Greg Niemeyer exploring different ways of governing and caring for water, from the Indigenous Yurok kinship regime to possible futures shaped by AI. A circular model of the Sacramento River watershed responds to visitors seated in seven surrounding chairs, each activating a different water regime and changing how water circulates. When multiple visitors participate, their choices blend into negotiated patterns, revealing how competing values and decisions shape the future of water.

Drawing on Edward Said’s Orientalism, Nouf Aljowaysir’s Salaf and Colonial Index examine how dominant visual regimes have shaped the representation of Arabia and the wider Middle East. European colonial imagery classified and exoticized the region, while later American representations increasingly reframed it through the languages of oil, threat, terrorism, and war.

The works in Salaf and Colonial Index are paired through related poses,
compositions, and visual structures. Erasure makes these visual parallels more apparent, drawing attention to recurring patterns across both bodies of work and how partial representations shape how the region is seen and understood.

09/24/2026

Missing Objects Library (MOL) is a curated, web-based repository of handmade 3D objects designed through an intersectional, feminist lens. MOL is displayed as both a physical video installation and a free, web-based model library. It offers an alternative to commercial, status quo storefronts that provide digital assets for game design and special effects. Objects sold in these spaces are typically devoid of provenance, continually reinscribing false notions of neutrality while privileging white, cis, heteronormative dominance.

In contrast, MOL is an open platform with downloadable models that more accurately represent the world we inhabit. It disrupts the historical gatekeeping performed by supposedly “neutral” marketplaces by offering 3D-modeled objects that span a wide range of identities, abilities, and affinities. As AI systems increasingly generate images, objects, and virtual worlds from existing digital materials, the biases embedded in those materials become part of their visual vocabulary. By foregrounding provenance, specificity, and lived experience, MOL proposes a more accountable foundation for the worlds produced with and through AI.
