The effort continues to create a shrine to high school basketball in the far western end of Kentucky

Ed Jones, who was a star player at Benton High School and later coached at his Alma Mater, got the effort rolling a little more than a year ago. Still to be confirmed is where the museum will be housed.

First choice is one of the gyms from the 1950s that are still in operation – Chambers Memorial Gymnasium in Benton, where the Indians played until Benton and county schools North and South Marshall were consolidated after the 1974 school year.
The Benton gym, along with the arenas at North and South Marshall, also took turns serving as home court for the new Marshall County High School Marshals until a new facility – Reed Conder Gymnasium – was built on the MCHS campus. It opened in 1979.

Many fans and competitors in the far western end of the state have felt neglected by those in the central and eastern parts of the state.

“In these 13 counties, we’ve got eight state championships, several runners-up” and an assortment of highly talented players, Jones said.

Members of the museum organization continue working to collect information and photographs, newspaper clippings, rosters, statistics, box scores and other paraphernalia from their home counties.

Former Hardin High School Basketball player from 1951 -1953 recounts some local history and things you may not have expected during that era. Personally, I found his stories intriguing and humorous. We don't want generations to miss out on these great stories and that's why we provide them on our website, Facebook and YouTube so we can continue to preserve a little of Western Kentucky High School Basketball history. (Interviewed by our own Ed Jones!)

Do you love basketball? Do you love basketball history? What about local history in the 13 western counties of Kentucky? We have articles dating back to the mid 1920's as well as local coaches, refs, historians, players and more telling their story about their love for basketball. Join the team who want to share cherished basketball history with other like-minded viewers. Help spread the word! We can't spill the beans just yet, but we are hoping to create a historical museum in the heart of Benton that can serve this area as a heritage museum for everything basketball in Western Kentucky. If you know of someone that could share a great story on camera, let us know! Contact Ed Jones on how you can help preserve basketball history in Western Kentucky.
