Bennington Historical Society And Flower Posse The Bennington Historical Society's mission is to discover, salvage, enjoy and pass on the unique history of the Bennington, Nebraska Community.

The Historical Society is active in researching, presenting and promoting the history of the Bennington Community. This includes the support of a Museum and displays, a project that showcases historical images and displays throughout our Community, the promotion and education of the Sass Iris project, the development of video presentations on YouTube, interviewing longtime residents and other projects

NEW DISPLAY at the City Office. Kris Reiswig took some beautiful photographs of Sass Iris and was gracious enough to create this display. These unique flowers were developed by two Bennington brothers nearly a century ago. Visit the City Office, or better yet, join the Flower Posse and help spread their beauty through our Community.

Sass Irises are in BLOOM! Over 300 irises were developed by the Sass Family, who were pioneers to our community. Jacob, Hans and Henry Sass are world renown for there development of these beautiful flowers starting more than a century ago. They are Bennington's Official Flower. Check out the iris beds behind the Police Station and the flower gardens around town. The Sasses legacy continues.

I was staring out the window watching the blizzard and a date flashed in my mind: "January 12"! That was the day of the School Children's tragedy of 1888. One hundred and 35 years ago the day started out 'spring like'; however by lunch temperatures began to drop and it began to snow. The wind picked up an by mid-afternoon it had become a raging blizzard. Teachers had been caught completely off guard. Temperatures would drop to -34 degrees.
Facing 'white out' conditions more than 200 students and teachers were lost as they sought shelter.
The storm went through this area. Snow drifts covered farm houses and barns. Having to feed their livestock; Henry Paulson accessed their barn through the upstairs window. All the windows and doors on the ground level were buried in snow.
The railroad had been completed to Irvington; however, the telegraph line and operator was stationed in a box car located next to the Papio Creek. He reported the wind was so strong, he feared it was going to blow the car off the tracks into the creek. He opted to find shelter in the depot but the slow was so blinding, it could not be seen. He said he found the rail tracks and dragged one let along the tracks and reached out into the blinding snow to find the loading dock. He eventually found it!
The storms remnants delayed the construction of our business district until the snow melted that spring.

A long time resident stopped by and gave us this piece of Bennington History. Its a century old marketing gift from a Bennington grocery store. John Petersen had a mercantile store and also the first 'horse-less' carriage garage in town. He also produced the first electricity that powered lights in Bennington. This is a broom hanger.
