Opossums are North America’s only marsupials, which means they keep their babies in a pouch. Shortly after the babies leave their mother’s pouch at around 3 months old, they are completely independent. Opossum babies at this age should be left alone.

Younger opossums may need human assistance – always give the Center a call at 440-471-8357 before intervening.

Eastern Cottontail Rabbits often build their nests in yards and open spaces. If you stumble across one, do not move the baby bunnies because their mother will be unable to find them. She will return at dusk and dawn to feed and groom her babies.

A fawn lying quietly by itself with no mother in sight is perfectly normal. Deer do this to protect their young, as the presence of an adult would attract the attention of predators.

If a fawn seems to be in a “dangerous” location, do not move it or the mother will have trouble finding her baby. If a fawn is walking around and making noise, it may be abandoned and in need of assistance.

Warblers, birders alight on Northwest Ohio for Biggest Week in American Birding

“Ohio in general is an amazing place for bird migration,” said Tim Jasinski, an avid birder and wildlife rehabilitation specialist at the Lake Erie Nature & Science Center in Bay Village. “It’s just incredible birding. We’re very lucky to have this spot we call home.”

The t-shirts don’t lie. Northwest Ohio during spring is truly the warbler capital of the world, and for all bird lovers, the Biggest Week in American Birding festival is the place to be.

Easter is approaching, and so is the important reminder that rabbits, chicks and ducklings are not low-maintenance pets.

These animals can live for many years and require proper care and attention, like any dog or cat. Many people can be persuaded by pet stores and breeders to purchase baby animals as Easter gifts, then abandon them once the holiday fun is over. Always do your research before purchasing a pet and know that you are providing them with a forever home.

*Baby Wildlife Awareness Month*

Squirrels are likely to retrieve their babies when they end up out of the nest too early. They often maintain more than one nest site and will move their babies as needed. If a baby is found out of its nest and is not yet able to climb on its own, place it in an open container off the ground and give plenty of time to allow the mother to retrieve her baby.

Stay tuned for more information on how you can help baby wildlife this spring. Questions? Call our wildlife staff at 440-471-8357 before intervening.

*Baby Wildlife Awareness Month*

A baby bird with skin still visible or only covered in downy feathers should be placed back in the nest or in an artifical nest. If fully feathered but unable to fly, the bird is a fledging that should be left alone to learn critical survival skills.
