On Thursday, May 19, 2022, the LSU Corps of Cadets held a Joint Commissioning Ceremony. Representing the Cadets of the Ole War Skule were W. Henson Moore, President, and Captain Dillon Mathies, Board Member, who each presented awards to some of the commissionees.

CPT Mathies presented a special medallion and engraved wooden display case to each of the members of the 2021-2022 Senior Symposium class. Those participants gained valuable insight from past and present military leaders, key members in our government, and academics to prepare them for their first day on the job.

Board President Moore presented the Corps Achievement Award to the top comissionees from each branch in this year's commissioning class. These Cadets exemplified attributes consistent with sound leadership, academic commitment, and the capacity for continuous development.

The keynote speaker of this year's ceremony was Lt. Gen. Terry L. Gabreski, who was the second woman to hold the rank of Lieutenant General in the United States Air Force. During her time at LSU, women were not allowed to join the Reserve Officer Training Corps. Lt. Gen. Gabreski provided in her remarks themes of overcoming adversity, creating achievable goals, and doing the best at the job you're in now, which will inevitably lead to roles of greater responsibility.

Congratulations to all the awardees, members of Senior Symposium, and commissionees!

On this day 77 years ago, the Battle of Iwo Jima began.

Did you know cadets of the Ole War Skule were some of the many who fought bravely for those five weeks in 1945?

Most notable was perhaps Major General Graves B. Erskine of the United States Marine Corps. In October 1944, Major General Erskine assumed command of the 3rd Marine Division and led it during the hard-fought campaign on Iwo Jima in February and March 1945. Through his brilliant, skillful and inspiring leadership, he kept his division in the forefront of the assault, finally breaking through to the north coast of the island, thereby splitting the enemy into two groups. His dynamic force and personal courage were in great measure responsible for the success of 3rd Division and the entire operation.

One of the greatest Marines, Erskine, a native of Columbia, Louisiana, graduated from LSU in 1917. For more information on MG Erskine and LSU's rich military history, visit http://olewarskule.lsu.edu/lsu-military-museum/battle-for-iwo-jima.html.
