Our Fiddle Leaf Fig is in bloom! This Ficus lyrata was a gift from Baltimore’s own plantsman, @hiltoncarter a few years back. (originally named treesus) this beautiful tree can now be visited in the historic conservatory palm house! 🪴

Whats unique about all figs is that every flower grows inside out. The fruit pictured is really an inverted flower, lined with small pollen structures that rely on being pollinated by a specific type of wasp!

Our Fiddle Leaf Fig is covered in fruit! We were gifted this beautiful Ficus lyrata by Baltimore’s own plantsman @hiltoncarter a few years back. This tree (originally named treesus) can now be visited in the historic conservatory palm house! 🪴

The flower of any type of ficus actually grows inside out. The fruit pictured is technically a flower and is linned with small pollen structures which are pollinated by a very specific type of wasp!

The bat is back! Our White Bat Plant is thriving in the palm house waiting for you to take a look at its unexpected and extraordinary form. Native to the deep understory of Asian rainforests preferring full shade and low light. This rare beauty would make an exotic houseplant. It blooms August through September.

Every year the Chimney Swifts migration follows the same path amd these little birds come back to our same chimney year after year. Every day at nightfall for about 2 weeks these birds take turn flying into the chimney where they will spend the night. If you loom closly you can see them dive into the chimney one after another. #rawlingsconservatory #baltimore #druidhillpark #chimneyswift

This fly is trying to pollinate our Bulbophyllum hybrid! The flower produces an acrid smell when it first opens up. This smell along with having a modified petal that resembles rotten flesh attracts the fly. This modified petal acts as a lever that, when weighed down by the fly, allows the flower to release pollinia that sticks to the flies head. The fly then takes the pollinia to the next orchid. Many different genus of orchids can cross pollinate leading to there being over 100,000 hybrids known in existence!

Yesterday we said goodbye to a valued colleague and dear friend. Marques was with the Department of Recreation and Parks for 19 years and made his mark across the Parks bureau. He worked with Horticulture Division, as well as at the Conservatory, and traveled around the department a bit until his most recent work in the Druid Hill Maintenance Yard. He was dependable, kind, generous, and remains one of the best examples of work ethic around. He was skilled in so many different ways, and always willing to help out whenever and wherever he could.

The two photos show Marques as we knew him. 1) As a delightful gem of a human (photo by Francesca Spero, taken at the "silent disco" at an NRPA conference). 2) As a hard-working, committed individual (taken at Community Gardening Day . . . in the rain).

He was also a great resource for "friends" groups. To name just two, he was a stalwart supporter of Tour Dem Parks, Hon, and also dedicated to the Horticultural Society of Maryland.

He will be missed by so many, our hearts go out to all those who knew him, especially his friends and family.

The echinacea is starting to fade in our perennial beds but we won’t cut it back just yet! Leaving the echinacea seed heads through the winter provides seed as food and a good shelter for many of our Maryland native birds such as the gold finch! 🌱we recommend leaving the echinacea stems and seed heads in the garden untill very early spring and then cutting them back for new growth! #goldfinch #coneflower #rawlingsconservatory #druidhillpark #baltimore

✨This is a friendly reminder to not bring glitter or confetti into our gardens or any public area. Confetti (even biodegradable ones like this paper) contains dyes and chemicals that leach into the soil and are harmful to animals, plants and humans. Whatever does not get stuck in trees and plants will wash into the storm drain and pollute the Chesapeake Bay. This is a big mess for our park staff to clean up so please do your part and refrainfrom using confetti and glitters!

Cat tails in the tropical house, and it’s not our conservatory cat, Mango! This is Chenille Plant or Acalypga hispida. It is native to Hawaii and Oceania. Chenille is the French word for caterpillar, which describes this plant’s blossom perfectly,,,well, almost, I vote that it looks more like a cat tail. Our toddler came for a visit to escape the rain today and had a fantastic time smelling fragrant plants and watching the fish in the pond. Thank you for being a great community asset!
Thank You for giving one of the best "living" gifts ever! In the fall of 2016, I attended your free tree giveaway and took home a small, about foot and a half tall Fig Tree sapling. I was hopeful that it would survive the winter and grow tall and healthy. This was my first ever tree! To my extreme delight, my Fig Tree not only grew, it got HUGE and it has been bearing hundreds of figs! They are delicious!!! Thank you! This is my tree's only 3rd summer anh just look at it!!!! 🌱 This is Spring of 2017 (after surviving its 1st winter)

Many species of tropical plants. The staff are very friendly. The old iron work conservatory is beautiful. Only wish there was a little cafe.
One of Baltimore's most beautiful spots. There's always something new to see as the plants grow and bloom and change through the seasons.
This is great! Is this being done in phases?
Loved the decorations this year! Beautiful :-) Everyone should check the Annual Holiday Show out before it ends!!
This is a wonderful and one of the first conservatory's in the USA, right here in Baltimore, Md. Rawlings Conservatory & Botanical Gardens. Educational programs throughout the year.
Can you identify this flower for me??
