Historic Druid Hill Park makes for a great bike tour. (These pictures are really cool.)

In 1863, the Baltimore City Council approved a $300,000 loan to construct a billion gallon capacity reservoir in the newly established Druid Hill Park. Though the new city waterworks project from Lake Roland to the Mount Royal Reservoir on the Jones Falls had just been completed, it had become appar...

Winter is tough weather for giving bicycle tours, but it is a great time for me to take local historic tours (bolstering my knowledge of local history), and I had NEVER been in the Bromo-Seltzer building. We were able to listen to the history of this iconic building and its associated businesses, as well as tour the clock tower itself. Cool inner workings and a great view. The historic Bromo-Seltzer Arts Tower is open for tours on Saturdays. Go to their web site and plan a visit!

You can see many of these or the museums that house them on our bike tours!

How to define Baltimore? Happy eclecticism, we say. The sweep of our history and culture runs the gamut, from staunch patriotism to lowbrow cinema, from religious iconography to strip-show kitsch. Citizens here are equally proud of the birthplace of The Star-Spangled Banner and the home of John Wate...

When we can go through Camden Yards we also go by the Raven's (M&T Bank) Stadium and I just might point to the statue of Johnny Unitas and talk about the 1958 Championship game against the NY Giants. Here is Ray bBerry (#82) catching a pass from Johnny Unitas (#19) in that very competitive game.

Trevor was a great guide, and what a fun couple of hours touring neighborhoods, seeing unique Baltimore landmarks and stopping the bike and taking in the view at Fort McHenry. That is the birthplace of our Star Spangled Banner, and seeing and hearing the story made so much more sense than my elementary education of memorizing dates. This is the alley way of Lady Day Way, a tribute to where Billie Holiday lived in Baltimore. Loved learning all the little things that make a place, like painted window screens and how 'alright' is what is common for people to say when you ask how they are. Recommend this if you want to get your bearings and see what peaks your interest to explore more...or if you are short on time, you get a good feel for Baltimore.

Learned a lot about Baltimore's history of racial segregation in housing and education. My current neighborhood in Northwest fought tooth and nail against Morgan State moving into the area. Thanks to Steven K. Ragsdale, The Baltimore Historical Society, and The Village Learning Place for an enlightening evening. The beginnings of Morgan State were in a church basement along the route of our SW Historic Tour.

Why Google Is Celebrating Philanthropist George Peabody

Today in Baltimore History is George Peabody's birthday, and he is featured as a Google Doodle! In 1816 he moved to Baltimore and made his fortune in business and investments, establishing a firm that would later become JP Morgan. He is honored today as "the father of modern philanthropy" and Baltimore benefited greatly from his endowments. The Peabody Institute is world renowned and the oldest Conservatory in the US. The Peabody Library is listed as one of the 20 most beautiful libraries in the States, and is often used as a wedding venue.

His generosity earned him a Congressional Gold Medal on this day in 1867

The lengths I go to for my tour guests! Here I am upstairs at the historic building that is now the elegant Elephant Restaurant. Where I sit (with a superb mixed drink from the bar,) used to be the bedroom of the daughter-in-law of John Eager Howard. Howard, for whom Howard County is named, was a Colonel in the Continental Army and a Governor of Maryland. His statue stands in Mt. Vernon Park.

NEW TRIPADVISOR REVIEW!!!

SUPER FUN WAY TO SEE BALTIMORE

FROM: Edmonton, Canada
Reviewed 6 days ago

"My husband and two grown-up sons had only one day in Baltimore, but were able to cover everything from the top of Federal Hill to City Hall and the beautiful harborfront. The bikes were comfortable, our guide Penny was funny and smart and full of great stories, and we just had a blast. We learned more about the history and character of Baltimore than we could ever have expected, and enjoyed ourselves immensely. Loved Penny, loved this tour, loved the city. (We were all fans of David Simon's The Wire, too, so our tour included sites from the show as well.) We recommend this company to anyone who likes to see a place close up with someone who really knows her city and enjoys sharing it with others."

Great Waterfront Tour today! We picked up Cameron along the way (shirtless in the 2nd pic)...he hung out with us at the Civil War Museum stop and stayed all the way to the end, demonstrating his wheelie skills now and then along the way. This family really got the Baltimore experience. And they were "The Wire" fans as well. Call us and set up a tour.

On this date, Feb 18th, in 1795, George Peabody is born in a small town in Massachusetts that was later named after him. He helped found the investment firm J.P.Morgan, and used his wealth to become a world renowned philanthropist. Here in Baltimore we know him best as founder of the Peabody Institute and George Peabody Library in Baltimore, which will be on our newest tour, now being developed.
