Icahm/icomos Management of Archaeological Heritage
(1)

The International Scientific Committee on Archaeological Heritage Management (ICAHM) advises ICOMOS and the World Heritage Committee on matters that pertain to all aspects of the management of archaeological sites and landscapes. These include formulating and propagating standards and best practices for both archaeological research and cultural resource management.

Mission: Following the mandate of the World Heritage Convention, ICAHM is concerned not only with World Heritage Sites and archaeological sites being considered for inscription on the World Heritage List, but with all archaeological sites, landscapes, and related resources around the world. ICAHM collaborates with international, national, regional, and local organizations that pursue related goals. ICAHM is unique among them in its focus on the development and propagation of effective and efficient international cultural resource management standards and practices.

Asian Regional Course on People-Nature-Culture 2019 | ICCROM

ICCROM has announced a call for applications for the 2019 Asian Regional Course on Promoting People-Centred Approaches to Conservation of Nature and Culture (PNC19).

The course will take place in Sri Lanka in November 2019.

The course aims at contributing towards the new paradigm shift ‘from the care of heritage to that of pursuing the wellbeing of both heritage (natural and cultural) and society as a whole’. The goal is to strengthen understanding of people and communities as a core component of heritage management among those involved in heritage management, thus ensuring that natural and cultural heritage have a dynamic and mutually beneficial role in society today and long into the future.

Find more information at https://www.iccrom.org/courses/asian-regional-course-people-nature-culture-2019 and apply until August 30, 2019

Climate Risk Assessment for the Heart of Neolithic Orkney World Heritage Site

Climate change is threatening archaeological sites all around. In recent years a new methodology has been developed: Climate Change Vulnerability Index, which is applied to rapidly assess climate impacts to values and communities.

The methodology was tested at the Scottish World Heritage Site of Heart of Neolithic Orkney.

On World Environment Day we should raise awareness on the important role played by cultural heritage sites in fighting climate change!

While extreme weather conditions represent a considerable challenge globally, some communities have been living with (and adapting to) similar events for centuries.

Sense and sustainability – 6th – 10th of May, Archaeological Museum in Zagreb

ICAHM is sponsoring a session at the upcoming Sense and Sustainability Conference in Zagreb between the 6th and 10th May (https://zagrebarchaeologytourism.com/)

The title and abstract for the session are below. We would welcome papers from all ICAHM members. These can be submitted through the conference website. The deadline for papers is the 31st March.

Session: Is tourism destroying World Heritage?

Abstract: World heritage sites are popular destinations for tourists, yet there is often a conflict between preserving these outstanding places and enabling people to access and experience them. This dichotomy lies at the heart world heritage management. The ICOMOS Mexico Charter on Managing Tourism at Places of Historical Interest states that, ‘Reasonable and well managed physical, intellection and/ or emotive access to heritage and cultural development is both a right and a privilege’ [emphasis added]. But this right comes at a cost. Many iconic World Heritage Sites are over-crowded and large numbers of visitors are leading to unsustainable tourism development. Global tourism is also a major contributor to greenhouse gas emissions and global warming, and World Heritage Sites play a significant role in this industry. Rising sea levels, increased storminess, desertification and increased rainfall are already impacting many World Heritage Sites, and the problem is only going to get worse. This session will explore the intersection between tourism and sustainability – both of individual sites and of World Heritage in general. It welcomes papers exploring issues relating to World Heritage Sites including, but not limited to, carrying capacities, visitor management, community engagement in tourism, tourism and sustainability, climate change and tourism and slow-tourism.

If you have any questions about the session please contact w.megarry [a] qub.ac.uk. For questions about the conference, please see the website.
