Brought some nice souvenirs home last summer after our family reunion and visit to the T&P. My grandfather, Hazelius Austin, was an Inspector at the depot after moving his family west from Hattiesburg Mississippi to Baird in 1922. Lee and the staff could not be nicer. Great memories.

CABOOSE PROJECT RECEIVES RECOGNITION FROM OUT-OF-TOWN VISITOR

You never really stop to think about the number of people that will be touched by a historical restoration project until you receive a letter like this one. Dr. Cozens from Keller, TX, took the time to write a thank you note to the Chamber, and we are truly humbled by his gesture. Once complete, this Caboose will be used as a tourist draw on future billboards to bring people Downtown to enjoy and even snap a picture alongside.

This is a continuation of previous articles published. Baird High School students, Marcos Lopez and Hailey Self, are tackling restoring the Caboose as their Leadership Project. The two upcoming Seniors will present this project before a panel of judges mid-September for a chance at scholarships given by the Texas Midwest Community Network. Check this page for pictures and updates on their progress.

We are thankful for the work completed to date by Baird High School students, Homestead Long Term Care employees, and Innovac Environmental owner and employees. We invite you to stay tuned for more improvements coming soon!

Baird High School students: Marcos Lopez, Hailey Self, Jaden Cerda, & Elijah Branton spent a few hours scrubbing and pressure washing the Caboose in preparation for exterior paint. This is a continuation of work to be performed to restore the 1979 Missouri Pacific Caboose No. 13679. Marcos and Hailey will present their project before a panel of judges in September as part of their Leadership Project. Texas Midwest Community Network is awarding scholarships to the top 3 projects. This Leadership Class is designed to spark student involvement in rural communities.

The T&P Depot will be hosting an art show featuring the work of Gene Swinson. Saturday, Sept. 15th, 1pm - 5pm.

Gene Swinson ( 1923 - 2008) gave decades of service to the Big Country and his community. He was a lifetime “Baird Bear” and the hundreds of drawings and Bear art he furnished for the school attest to that. During his lifetime, he taught and mentored several Big Country artists, including Wayne Baize and Joshua Roberts, among others. His works are varied and we are proud to be hosting such an event.

Baird’s First Saturday celebration of the Bankhead Highway has been re-scheduled for May 5, 2012. Plans to start a drive in Ranger and end in Baird are coming together and will be announced soon. Many people are excited about this venture and we plan on making it a fun day exploring one of the best little strips of vintage road in Texas. Mark you calendar and plan on having a great day of experiencing a bit of Bankhead Highway history.

“First Saturday” began last week with the T&P Depot being the site of the kick-off celebration of the Bucking Horse Museum and Hall of Fame. Over 50 people were in attendance to watch a showing of the final round of the very first National Finals Rodeo in 1959. Many toured the T&P museum as well as the fledgling Bucking Horse Museum located in the back of “Moo’vin On Up” 139 Market St.

Look for exciting news about next month’s Open House and a special First Saturday in April with a showing of our film on the Bankhead Highway.

In loving memory of Lyman Brigham, longtime Baird businessman and a great friend to many who passed away today at the age of 93. His many donations to the museum have helped make history come alive. A talk with Lyman and a shake of his hand was always a highlight of the day! He will be greatly missed in our community.

I'd like to thank all who participated in yesterday's events, whether as vendors, volunteers, entertainment or spectators! It was a very successful day for our Baird Fire Volunteer Fire Department who raised some much needed funds for their heroic efforts. They mean so much to our community & it's been a tough couple of years 'fire wise' and this money will be helping them with their equipment. The Chamber of Commerce and the T&P Depot Museum thank you so much and hope you'll come join us at next year's event!

We'll be posting more pictures of yesterday's activities throughout the week. If you were there, feel free to post your own photos! We'd love to see them!

General information

Visit our nice little West Central Texas town! You'll find lots of antique stores and a couple of fine restaurants on the way to our museum south of I-20 at exit 307. The museum and visitors center is located at 100 Market St. in Baird, Texas. The museum is always a work in progress. Many interesting exhibits from the T & P railroad; the Bankhead highway; a horse named Traveler, who worked on building the railroad before his illustrious history as an AQHA foundation horse and many more. Admission is always free! If you are a local in the area, think about volunteering some time to work on the museum! We gather on Wednesdays and always hear many interesting tales of local history and discuss upcoming exhibits. We'd love to see you!
