2/26/24 Tonight I attend the BROTHER/ OUTSIDER a documentary and panel discussion about Bayard Rustin an openly gay black man in the 1960’s, who organizer of the MARCH on Washington. The documentary can be watched on Netflix.
When I created “BIG 6” my research revealed WILKINS, YOUNG, RANDOLPH, KING, FARMER & LEWIS were the primary organizers. It’s so easy to forget people who don’t fit in to society because of race, skin color, nationality and sexual preference. For this post I inserted BAYARD RUSTIN because of his contributions to the MOVEMENT & he was the primary organizer of the MARCH on WASHINGTON. Great Job JD Spain for Arlington!

Black History Month is an excellent opportunity to celebrate the achievements of African Americans in various fields, including the arts. This year, the Black History Month theme is “African Americans and the Arts. We want to shine a light on the incredible work of Felecia Brice McFail, an Afro-American Calligrapher from Arlington (Green Valley). Despite being self-taught, she honed her craft by attending the Corcoran School of the Arts in Washington, DC, and started her own calligraphy business, FOHTA - From One Hand To Another - Est.1981. The FOHTA Collection is a unique calligraphy business that transforms spoken words into visual art, promoting the importance of good handwriting.

By acknowledging the contributions of African American artists, we pay tribute to their creativity, resilience, and cultural impact throughout history. Celebrating their unique perspectives and the obstacles they've overcome can inspire us and deepen our understanding of their experiences. It's an opportunity to recognize the rich tapestry of African American experiences and the vital role they've played in shaping our society.

Let's take a moment to celebrate African American artists this month and honor their extraordinary contributions to the arts.
