Tonight is the Onyx Moon (a.k.a. Black Moon! ), September 30th, 2016 is the Onyx Moon, the second New Moon in a month. Like the Blue Moon, the second Full Moon in a month, it marks a coincidence between our calendar and an astronomical circumstance. However, astronomers are especially fond of New Moons because it means darker skies and, therefore, better observations of faint objects. JHB

Thanks to Mr. Jason Chang for providing these additional beautiful image of the Moon, taken at the St. John's College Observatory during the open house for the Summer Academy 2 students. The image was taken on 22 July 2015, by Mr. Chang's mobile phone camera as it was pointed through the eyepiece of the SJC Observatory's Meade Schmidt-Cassegrain telescope. The slight fuzziness in the central (or top right, depending on your browser settings) image is due to the presence of some clouds moving overhead.
