Thank you to the United States Lighthouse Society for bringing this article to our attention! Thomas Point Shoal Lighthouse is definitely a unique lighthouse. It is possible to take a tour of this lovely Maryland landmark.

Not surprised that our very own Thomas Point Shoal Lighthouse made the list! The Thomas Point Shoal Lighthouse is one of the last screw-pile lighthouses left in the world, and the only one in the U.S. still in its original location. It is one of the few lights in our country designated a National Historic Landmark. Sadly, the structure of the lighthouse is showing severe deterioration, and bids are pending to complete a major restoration of the steel beams that hold up the cottage style lighthouse. The USLHS has received a grant from the Maryland Historic Trust for $100,000, but will not be enough to complete the restoration. Here are two ways you can help #savethethomaspointshoallighthouse:

GoFundMe

Or simply by sharing this post so others that might be interested in donating can see it.

Thank you!

Hi All... so sorry this page has been quiet. We had a really busy season!

We are desperate for volunteers. No joke.

Some have left for college, a few moved away and well life happens.

We are going to be having a few winter meetings after the new year. Not trainings because those will come later. These are just how things are run and getting to know people. (I also heard a rumor of potential snacks)!

Thomas Point Shoal Lighthouse is an active beacon of navigation and has been restored to approximately 1901 and one room for later Coast Guard. It is also a National Historic Landmark.

We provide all encouragement and training and have places for people from adim to logistics and speaking.

If you have messaged me in the past, I have you on the list for the invite. If you haven't...you have nothing to lose. Please come meet us and hear our stories.

You can message through here or if you want an actual person [email protected]

Many Thanks to our friend David Sites for these lovely pictures of the lighthouse.

The season is quickly approaching! If you are interested in volunteering, we are having some gatherings at the Annapolis Maritime Museum. Learn about what we do and a level of involvement that works for you. All are welcome.

If you are interested in a tour, they are running June- (early) October. Restoration is nearly done and it is beautiful.

Preservation and upkeep volunteer opportunities are also available through Chesapeake Chapter of the U.S. Lighthouse Society. They also host other events in the region. We cannot do what we do without them.

Questions? Message us here or [email protected].

Hello All!!

We are about halfway through our season right now and by tour dates less than that. It has been a fairly mild season and we have been seeing some great days out at the lighthouse.

This is the only group that can get you inside and our docents have such a passion.

We interpret two different eras.... High Victorian which was the heyday of the screwpile structure and the Coast Guard watch.

Occasionally we are joined by someone who was stationed there and we often don't know until the day before....How amazing is that?!

We are open to new volunteers and junior docents (16+ with parental consent)

If you want to see some other examples of lighthouses in the area, plan on the Chesapeake Chapter of the United States Lighthouse Society's Lighthouse Challenge. They have board positions open as well as restoration opportunities in the area.

07/14/2017

We are sending both tours out tomorrow with docents who have a real passion for this lighthouse. What a treat!

July is a great month to get the "inside skinny" on the restoration. We still have spaces available on July 15 and 29, but don't wait too long or you might miss out. Concerned about bad weather? No worries! There is no cost to you if your tour is cancelled because of bad weather, and rescheduling is a breeze!

Here is the information for a new and improved ticketing system. Make your reservations online! If you have never been, this is a great year to go.

If you have been, like Bob said, you have to see everything the Preservation Team has accomplished!

Tour Information and Tickets available here:

You just have to see what the preservation effort has accomplished!

Our next tour is July 1st! We have a beautiful blend of docents this year. Some very experienced and some who are just picking up the ropes.

And you, our friends, are the ones who keep this thing running.

This is our second decade of tours to the lighthouse and it is a dance of new faces visiting and constantly strengthening our tours to learn what our guests want.

Join us, fill out the survey. And if you really love us, tell your friends.

What do you get out of it?

Greetings at the Annapolis Maritime Museum and time to relax and chat with docents before the tour.

A safety briefing from the captain and introduction to your experience.

A Supervisor the entire tour time.

ON THE TRIP OUT:
Chat with your fellow guests. We also have a microphone to talk about local land sights from the water and pictures.

AT THE LIGHT
This is the only way you can get in. Our leads are well trained and answer questions. You can take pictures.

ON THE WAY BACK
We ask you to fill out a survey.

Hello!

I hope you all had a wonderful winter. We are into our 2nd decade of sharing this lighthouse with you

It's that time again! Our first tour is June 10th. It is really easy to sign up.

Our docents have been learning about restoration work, historic updates and other information to enrich your experience.

It's not just about history! We consider it an adventure and fun. Take a boat ride and see other sights along the bay on the way out.

You know you want to.....

04/03/2017

We spend a lot of time talking about lighthouses and there are a few different styles in the Chesapeake Bay. But did you also know that there are light ships? One is located right here in Charm City. If you find the aquarium, turn the corner and there she is! Definitely a must see next time you are in the city!

Dear Friends of Thomas Point

I would like to encourage you to become a member of the Chesapeake Chapter of the U.S. Lighthouse Society. This is a simple way to support the preservation work that takes place at the lighthouse you love.

This group also educates the region about the other active and decommissioned lights in the Chesapeake Bay.

The perks? A quarterly newsletter, membership card, and discounts on tours and other incentives as inspired.

Also sponsors of the annual lighthouse challenge! Volunteers are welcome.

An individual membership is only $15.

03/26/2017

We had an amazing seminar today. We were joined by the owners of the Baltimore Harbor Light and learned about their restoration efforts as well as the construction.

IT IS NOT TOO LATE! If you would like to be a docent for the 2017 season, please consider joining us for the remaining sessions. We provide study materials, flexible volunteer schedule and plenty of support and encouragement.

Or if you have been considering a tour but haven't gotten around to one yet, It is almost that time. Come spend a few hours with us out on the water and learn about Maryland's most iconic lighthouse.

Please email [email protected] for more details.

03/14/2017

How would you like to be a part of the volunteer team for tours to Thomas Point Shoal Lighthouse? We still have openings to fill for tour guides, tour supervisors, and more. Turkey Point Light had female keepers for 85 of the 115 years it was manned!

You can read a little about one of the keepers - Fanny Salter (active 1925-1947) in the book

Women Who Kept The Lights: An Illustrated History of Female Lighthouse Keepers. (Mary Louise Clifford and J. Candace Clifford).

The Turkey Point Light is a historic lighthouse in Cecil County. Although only a 35-foot tower, the 100-foot height of the bluffs on which it stands makes it the third highest light off the water in the Chesapeake Bay. It is also known for the large number of women who served as lightkeeper: four of the ten known keepers, serving 89 of the 115 years the light was manned.
