Thank you to the United States Lighthouse Society for bringing this article to our attention! Thomas Point Shoal Lighthouse is definitely a unique lighthouse. It is possible to take a tour of this lovely Maryland landmark.
Not surprised that our very own Thomas Point Shoal Lighthouse made the list! The Thomas Point Shoal Lighthouse is one of the last screw-pile lighthouses left in the world, and the only one in the U.S. still in its original location. It is one of the few lights in our country designated a National Historic Landmark. Sadly, the structure of the lighthouse is showing severe deterioration, and bids are pending to complete a major restoration of the steel beams that hold up the cottage style lighthouse. The USLHS has received a grant from the Maryland Historic Trust for $100,000, but will not be enough to complete the restoration.
