Cobblestone Farm Museum

Cobblestone Farm Museum An 1840s era Greek Revival Style Farmhouse Musuem. We offer interpretive programs, guided tours and a unique look into Ann Arbor's local history. Come see! Open Tuesdays from 10:30am to 1pm or by appointment.

Built for Dr. Benajah Ticknor, a U.S. Naval Surgeon. At it's height, the farm contained 400 acres. It was owned by three families: Ticknors, Booths and Campbells. It was given to the City of Ann Arbor in 1974 by George and Mary Campbell for use as a museum. We are a 501c3 organization.

Have you ever wondered how Americans celebrated the 4th of July in the 1850s?

Well, it wasn't all that different from how we celebrate it today. Picnics in the mid-19th century became a very popular reprieve from daily life and celebrating America's independence went hand in hand with the pastime. On June 30th, we'll be recreating a 1850s picnic at Cobblestone Farm. Be sure to stop by and see what it was like to celebrate the holiday!

A big thank you to everyone who came to Spring Fling! Our interpreters here enjoyed a respite from Sunday chores on the west porch, much like the Ticknor family would have in 1850. Dr. Benajah Ticknor wrote in his journal that his favorite view of the farm was off of this porch. It overlooked his Apple orchard. 🌳 #annarbormi #livinghistory #cobblestonefarm #1850 #nineteenthcentury #michigan #puremichigan #history

#OnThisDay in 1861, Dr. Henry Tappan, the President of the University of Michigan, addressed the people of Ann Arbor regarding the attack on Fort Sumter and the onset of a long-feared Civil War. The courthouse square was packed with concerned citizens desperately trying to hear the reading of the telegram. Fear and disbelief rang through the city.

A few days later, on April 19th, 1861, the Michigan Argus published an account of the Union meeting in the courthouse square. Here you'll see a photograph of the meeting, as well as the newspaper clipping from the Michigan Argus.

We're just one month away from Spring Fling!

Our living historians will be taking on discussions of hygiene, and demonstrating hairstyling techniques of the 1840s and 1850s. Plenty of pomatum, hair rats, and oils will abound!

We'll also have laundry and cooking demonstrations, as well as other presentations throughout the house. Stop by and learn what Spring in the mid-19th century was all about!

On this day in 1848, Heman & Eliza Ticknor posted an obituary in the Michigan Argus newspaper for their eldest surviving daughter, who passed away on March 2nd of consumption. Abi was very young at the time of her death at just 23 years old. She had never married and had lived at Cobblestone Farm since she was a child when she emigrated from New York with her family.

Diseases like consumption, known as tuberculosis today, ran rampant and claimed young lives. In the 19th century one could find countless ads posted in the local newspapers claiming cures for the disease but a true treatment for Tuberculosis would not be utilized until the development of Streptomycin, an antibiotic, in the 1940s.

It's a sad story but a very real reminder of the time period. This loving obituary serves as a testament of Abi's life, and the impact that her death had on her surviving family.
