We’re hard at work preparing the Museum of Make Believe’s inaugural exhibit, “Ghost Stories & Fairy Tales” and we wanted to share our progress with you all! Recently some of our new pedestals and displays were installed. These were skillfully and wonderfully constructed by Bill Schaffell of WJS Studios in Anaheim! Bill creates all kinds of custom decor, props and special effects in his shop. He also regularly volunteers for the Anaheim Halloween Parade … making magic there, not to mention his many creations for film and television, special events and more!

The largest of the displays delivered last week is for our “ghost story in miniature” three room set, “The Locket”. Bill helped design exactly what was needed to house this story told in miniature about a family’s legend of cursed treasure and tales of life at sea. We can’t wait to share it with you in-person soon!

• We want to thank the Orange County Community Foundation for supporting our mission with a grant from the CAC Foundation Fund! This type of funding allows us to continue to work with talented artists, such as Lori Meeker, who is currently creating this enchanting 10X15 ft. mural as a backdrop to our enchanted forest! This grant was such a welcome surprise as we enter the New Year!

As a museum supported solely by our generous donors, this funding is vital in allowing us to continue our mission, our artistry and growth as well as protecting our future and our ability to serve our community.

Thank you to all of you who support the arts whether through financial help, your own creations or volunteering your time … we appreciate you!

We’re thrilled to announce that we will have a special guest, Jasper’s Rock + Crystal Gift Shop, at our booth for the Laguna Beach annual city holiday celebration this Friday night.

Jasper’s Rock + Crystal Gift Shop all started when Jasper was home sick from school one day. By late morning, he was feeling better and decided to take his crystal and rock collection outside and set up a sales booth. He made quite a profit that day and loved helping people find their special stones. From then on, he has been turning up at all sorts of events with his homespun shop filled with wonderful gems. We love his enthusiasm! Swipe through for pictures of Jasper, his wares, and his younger assistant, his sister, Druzy.

We hope to see you December 1st from 5-9pm in downtown Laguna Beach! This Giving Tuesday we would like to partner with you on our adventure…but first let’s start with a story!

Once upon a time, in an enchanted forest, a fantastical music box rested on the gnarled roots of a wise old tree. Inside the music box, a princely cat with wistful eyes turned slowly to gentle music. He looked ahead with a gaze which hinted that he knew something the rest of the world didn’t. One evening an odd gust of wind whisked a flutter of purple petals along a cobblestone path that led straight to the music box. A stranger wandering the forest came upon it just as the song chimed its last notes. Looking up in awe, the stranger whispered, “This must be the Tree of Make Believe.” It has been said that those who hold the power of imagination most dear to their hearts are considered the greatest protectors of dreams and only they know how to find the hidden path that leads them to this sacred tree where they can whisper their secret stories and dreams into its gnarled roots. If they are true believers with a story in their hearts, the princely cat will step down from his throne and carve their initials into the tree to stay forevermore.

This Giving Tuesday is extra special as we prepare to open our inaugural home in Laguna Beach, so we are offering our supporters a chance to become a part of the magic! For Giving Tuesday this year, you can show that you believe in the power of storytelling by having your initials carved into our Tree of Make Believe that will watch over our upcoming exhibit, “Ghost Stories & Fairy Tales.” As of one of the most exceptional supporters of the Museum of Make Believe’s enchanted forest, we promise your carving will stay with us as we grow through the years on our journey. It is only for a limited time that your initials (or the initials of someone you would like to honor) can magically appear on our tree. Just visit our capital campaign at the link below, bypass the raffle ticket option, then support the mission of the Museum in a donation of $250 per carving and own a piece of our Tree of Make Believe!

One of the most cherished family traditions in Laguna Beach is tide-pooling…when you are able to walk on rocks usually submerged in the ocean and find all sorts of pockets of water teeming with life from starfish reaching out to little crabs scurrying and tiny darting fish.

Artist, Kelsey Irvin, froze this moment in time for dear family friends who commissioned the creation of this piece, “The Song in the Sea.” She was able to include many of their own personal treasures including sea glass, driftwood, sea shells, even some vintage Christmas music sheets (look at how it is layered beneath their golden locks).

We would love to hear about some of your cherished family traditions!

“The Ocean’s Edge” is a song from the original soundtrack for our “Strange Secrets of Starlight Park” radio drama. The music is set here to a short video with imagery of sea themed paintings by Geoff Mitchell who also did the directing, sound editing and music for “Starlight Park”.

If you haven’t had a chance to listen to the full show yet, just visit the link below to experience our mysterious adventure that follows the story of a young boy after he runs away from home into the deep dark forest. He finds himself in the most delightfully peculiar place … an abandoned amusement park filled with a magical cast of characters!

Please enjoy this mixed media piece called “A New Day” from Museum of Make Believe artist, Kelsey Irvin.

This is one of the few pieces from her figurative series that she has chosen to hold onto for her personal collection. The theme of this piece is all about independence and following your own heart…a message we can all love!

The clutch handbag is made from a vintage “five-year diary” cover, which later became the title of another one of Kelsey’s pieces that includes the actual pages from the found diary.

We love the way the art all connects to each other and how one story is carried on into the next.

We hope today you follow your own heart!

This past Saturday, August 26th, the cast of “Strange Secrets of Starlight Park” and a group of dear friends and supporters, got together to celebrate the launch of our radio show. “Starlight Park” is inspired by our love of the Golden Age of radio and tells the tale of a young boy named Evander as he embarks on an adventure, entering a strange world in the deep dark forest filled with magical misfits.

Kelsey Michaels Fine Art in Laguna Beach was kind enough to host us. Guests were able to sample treats from the show including the colorful “Dragon Hair Delight”, sweet apple popcorn, and raisin sandwiches with honey walnut cheese. Guests took a spin on our “Omen Machine” which tells of one’s fortune while gifting a silver charm. Everyone left with their own bottle of magic “Honeycomb Miracle Elixir” and a ticket to Starlight Park.

Included here are photos from the evening and be sure to check out our next post to see a fun video!

One of the many reasons we love fairytales is that so often they can teach us lessons learned from the wonderful animal creatures that share this world along with us. And oftentimes, we find ourselves whisked off into the world of make believe, imagining their unique personalities in a charming human form.

With great sadness, today we share the news that the little white Maltese puppy who inspired our “Shooting Star” fairy tale and puppet has crossed the rainbow bridge. His story in our collection of “Ghost Stories & Fairy Tales” will forever memorialize him as a guardian angel … which he truly was.

He is now off earning his wings and will forever remain with us in spirit …. our shooting star.

The countdown to Halloween time has started! With only 95 days to go, we wanted to share this glimpse into our 2022 Anaheim Halloween Parade creation! As the story goes, once upon a time, an enchanting group of magical misfits wandered the lands. We used this inspiration to invite the audience into our colorful world with our parade entry, a collection of wonderfully strange creatures and characters inspired by ghost stories & fairy tales. Our collection included the “Light Queen of the Enchanted Forest” in a glowing gown, the “Moon Rabbit”, the “Forest Guardians” and more! Our “Three Witches” trapped in birdcages were a favorite! Each birdcage was handmade, over five feet tall and was topped with a carved pumpkin representing the emotion of the witch trapped inside. Enjoy the video!

Standing in front of one of our miniature storytelling dioramas you might wonder how the tiny frosty ice cream freezer filled with colorful confections came to be. We have artist, Geoff Mitchell, to thank for those creations! Recently he was interviewed by the editor for American Miniaturist magazine to discuss some of his miniature artwork in depth. Their United Kingdom based sister magazine, “Dollhouse Miniatures,” picked up the story and it is now available to enjoy in both their digital and print (Issue 94). During the Golden Age of the 1930’s, families would gather together around the flickering vacuum tube of an old radio, waiting for those first eerie notes of the “Shadow” to begin. For the next forty-five minutes, they would be transported on an adventure of imagination. Last summer, we decide...
