“Robin’s Nest Cottage” is a little storybook house near the entryway at Museum of Make Believe. The cottage wasn’t part of our original design plan for the space …. however, through a series of happy accidents and a jolt of inspiration - we eventually decided to turn this enclosure (which houses our exterior display case inside) into this little house with lit windows and all. As it turns out, it fits perfectly into the theme of the story that accompanies our puppet figure, “Shooting Star” (the little white dog with sled).

The house is made mostly of foam, wood and some faux painting. Included here are different views and in-progress photos.

Other art pictured here alongside the house includes paintings by Kelsey Irvin, Geoff Mitchell with overhead silhouette light canister art by Tania Yager of Twisted Heart Puppetworks.

If you visit our “Ghost Stories & Fairy Tales” exhibit, you will find a very special piece of art called “Shooting Star : The Story of a Guardian Angel”. Created as a memorial sculpture for our seventeen year old dog named “Sparrow” … this twenty-inch-tall puppet is made of felted wool, sewn clothing, leather and ceramic. His sled was created with painted and finished illustration board and he stands in an icy landscape made of tiny pieces of crushed glass.

During the final days of Sparrow’s life just after the Museum of Make Believe exhibit space was rented, he spent many hours there with us as plans were being solidified for our layout and spatial design. The place where he slept was just behind what would become the location for our main tree, the “Tree of Make Believe”, and so when the time came for special carvings to be put on our tree by contributing artists, we put a hidden message for him on the root that points to where he slept. Sparrow is forever in our hearts!

Meet “Eli”, one of the characters from the one-seventh scale miniature diorama created by Geoff Mitchell called “The Hourglass : A Curiosity Shop” that tells the tale of love and sacrifice by an eccentric alchemist who has harnessed perhaps the most precious of all riches … time itself! 10-year-old Eli is made to scale, standing six and three quarter inches in height (making him just under 4 foot tall in life size). He was created with wood, clay, acrylic, armature and fabric. One of the things guests keep telling us is that they love all of the incredible little details in our “Ghost Stories & Fairy Tales” exhibit. Eli is one of those special little details that adds so much life to an already heartfelt story. We hope you can come out and visit us (and little Eli) soon! “Dragon Hair Delight” is one of our favorite songs written by Geoff Mitchell for our “Strange Secrets of Starlight Park” Golden Age of radio drama. It’s named after the colorful candy floss treat from a scene soon after the main character, Evander, makes his way into the rekindled magic of this abandoned world.

Enjoy a section from the song here, set to imagery of our dragon, Fricka, the creator of this delicious candy.

We’re looking forward to recording Episode Two for this radio drama this summer, and creating more music to help tell the story. And we are pretty certain that Fricka will be making an appearance in Episode Two!

If you haven’t yet heard Episode One, you can find the link below to listen! Enjoy!

We’re hard at work preparing the Museum of Make Believe’s inaugural exhibit, “Ghost Stories & Fairy Tales” and we wanted to share our progress with you all! Recently some of our new pedestals and displays were installed. These were skillfully and wonderfully constructed by Bill Schaffell of WJS Studios in Anaheim! Bill creates all kinds of custom decor, props and special effects in his shop. He also regularly volunteers for the Anaheim Halloween Parade … making magic there, not to mention his many creations for film and television, special events and more!

The largest of the displays delivered last week is for our “ghost story in miniature” three room set, “The Locket”. Bill helped design exactly what was needed to house this story told in miniature about a family’s legend of cursed treasure and tales of life at sea. We can’t wait to share it with you in-person soon!

• We want to thank the Orange County Community Foundation for supporting our mission with a grant from the CAC Foundation Fund! This type of funding allows us to continue to work with talented artists, such as Lori Meeker, who is currently creating this enchanting 10X15 ft. mural as a backdrop to our enchanted forest! This grant was such a welcome surprise as we enter the New Year!

As a museum supported solely by our generous donors, this funding is vital in allowing us to continue our mission, our artistry and growth as well as protecting our future and our ability to serve our community.

Thank you to all of you who support the arts whether through financial help, your own creations or volunteering your time … we appreciate you!

We’re thrilled to announce that we will have a special guest, Jasper’s Rock + Crystal Gift Shop, at our booth for the Laguna Beach annual city holiday celebration this Friday night.

Jasper’s Rock + Crystal Gift Shop all started when Jasper was home sick from school one day. By late morning, he was feeling better and decided to take his crystal and rock collection outside and set up a sales booth. He made quite a profit that day and loved helping people find their special stones. From then on, he has been turning up at all sorts of events with his homespun shop filled with wonderful gems. We love his enthusiasm! Swipe through for pictures of Jasper, his wares, and his younger assistant, his sister, Druzy.

We hope to see you December 1st from 5-9pm in downtown Laguna Beach! Be sure to stop by our booth to meet Jasper who is donating 50% of his profits to the Museum of Make Believe and hosting our gemstone treasure hunt where everyone will win their own “tomorrow stone”! Fifteen lucky treasure hunters will also find a glowing purple amethyst which means they won a copy of our “Ghost Stories & Fairy Tales” storybook!

Stop by our booth to do some of your holiday shopping and support Jasper and the love of make believe!

This Giving Tuesday we would like to partner with you on our adventure…but first let’s start with a story!

Once upon a time, in an enchanted forest, a fantastical music box rested on the gnarled roots of a wise old tree. Inside the music box, a princely cat with wistful eyes turned slowly to gentle music. He looked ahead with a gaze which hinted that he knew something the rest of the world didn’t. One evening an odd gust of wind whisked a flutter of purple petals along a cobblestone path that led straight to the music box. A stranger wandering the forest came upon it just as the song chimed its last notes. Looking up in awe, the stranger whispered, “This must be the Tree of Make Believe.” It has been said that those who hold the power of imagination most dear to their hearts are considered the greatest protectors of dreams and only they know how to find the hidden path that leads them to this sacred tree where they can whisper their secret stories and dreams into its gnarled roots. If they are true believers with a story in their hearts, the princely cat will step down from his throne and carve their initials into the tree to stay forevermore.

This Giving Tuesday is extra special as we prepare to open our inaugural home in Laguna Beach, so we are offering our supporters a chance to become a part of the magic! For Giving Tuesday this year, you can show that you believe in the power of storytelling by having your initials carved into our Tree of Make Believe that will watch over our upcoming exhibit, “Ghost Stories & Fairy Tales.” As of one of the most exceptional supporters of the Museum of Make Believe’s enchanted forest, we promise your carving will stay with us as we grow through the years on our journey. It is only for a limited time that your initials (or the initials of someone you would like to honor) can magically appear on our tree. Just visit our capital campaign at the link below, bypass the raffle ticket option, then support the mission of the Museum in a donation of $250 per carving and own a piece of our Tree of Make Believe!
