Kelsey Irvin has a wonderful way of flooding the senses with sparks and flashes of nostalgia … memories in a momentary glance. As you move in to explore the details of each piece, you’ll find so many other pathways to individual stories embedded within. Her talents are on full display here in a recent piece titled “Anticipate” created with vintage ephemera, fabric, oil, acrylic, graphic and leather on a 48x48 inch wood panel. Make sure to scroll through for the details!

We are proud to announce that we’ve recently received a grant from the California Arts Council! Over the next year, we will be creating a special box of make believe filled to the brim with mystery, enchantment and imagination for you all to unleash right at home! This grant funding will allow us to create a unique storytelling and arts experience. Treasures you may find in the box include an original “ghost stories and fairy tales” storybook as well as an assortment of charming activities (for instance, imagine the box itself turning into a miniature theater complete with puppets)! The goal of this project is to bring people back together without the divide of a screen. Instead, open up this magical box, curl up with some hot cocoa and get lost in a world of stories. Then follow the hands-on projects to create your own! Best of all, this grant allows us to give away fifty of these boxes of make believe to people who need an extra bit of magic in their lives. You can read the press release below:

If you happen to live in Southern California, we invite you to come out tomorrow evening, September 2nd from 6-9pm, for “Mermaids & Dolphins”, one of our artists solo exhibitions opening in Laguna Beach at Kelsey Michael’s Fine Art. It’s Laguna’s First Thursday Artwalk, so it is a wonderful night to explore the many galleries in the community.

Geoff’s exhibit portrays the worn, aged remnants and textures of an abandoned amusement park named ‘Starlight Park’, including the color, scribbled children’s graffiti, deteriorating signage, objects and just about anything the imagination conjures from a forgotten imaginary world.

This particular mixed media sculpture is titled“Blindman’s Wand” and stands 31” tall with a working light at top.

When looking for inspiration, we often don’t have to look further than the furry creature curled up at our feet. That was the case with this sculpture titled “Shooting Star” inspired by our real dog, Sparrow. The sculpture stands twenty inches tall and is created with felt, ceramic, leather, hand-sewn clothing and a sled made of illustration board and acrylic. See the real Sparrow below, who turned 15 in June.

The power of make believe is that it is never-ending…you can be in the year 2400 under new moons on distant planets with vivid pink waterfalls or you can be eight years old sitting at your plaid checked table enjoying a piece of cake with brightly colored sprinkles on it. You can be anywhere and everywhere all at once. We hope you find a bit of that magic today!

We had such a wonderful time at the Children’s Art Festival in Anaheim last weekend! Nearly 500 families came ready to imagine, dream and create with us. At the Museum of Make Believe booth, children and adults alike selected magical objects to hang on their “wishing chimes” and we were so touched that many told us these would be new treasured additions to their homes.

If you’d like to join us in making magic, you can become a charter member to the Museum of Make Believe! As a new member gift, we will send you a handmade one-of-a-kind collectible ornament. Just visit the link below to join today and get yours!
