The Knohl Collection

The Knohl Collection THE KNOHL COLLECTION - with 80,000 pieces, Dr Howard & Linda Knohl's collection is extraordinary in its scale, chronological arc and geographical breadth.

THE KNOHL's newest exhibition: Santa Ana, Calif. — The Bowers Museum is pleased to present REVOLUTION TO ROMANTICISM: Freedom of Expression in 19th Century European Painting. Twenty-six extraordinary canvases capture everything from terror on the battlefield to intimate moments of maternal affection. This rich and rousing exhibition from The Knohl Collection will be on view from November 23, 2013 through March 23, 2014. Romanticism emerged as a response to the fear and promise of the American and French Revolutions, the rigidity of the Enlightenment, and the alienation that grew out of the Industrial Revolution. Romantic artists broke free from the constraints of the state-run art academies and embraced a world that celebrated creativity and individuality. Fascinated by the exotic, artists traveled to distant lands; intrigued by the past, they journeyed back in time; and in search of the sublime, they reveled in the majesty of nature. Among the many treasures in the collection is a masterpiece by William Bouguereau, one of the most celebrated artists of the nineteenth century, who skillfully reveals the soul of youth in the exhibit’s signature image, La Tricoteuse (The Little Knitter). Other notable artists in the collection include: Rudolf Ernst, Jehan-Georges Vibert, Sir Lawrence Alma Tadema, Herbert Draper, and Francesco Hayez. This visually captivating exhibition weaves together a fascinating story of the liberation of human emotion, political and social upheaval, and a passionate artistic awakening. *************************************************************************** THE QUEEN'S GALLERY - Victorian Art From The Private Collection of Dr. Howard & Linda Knohl - is a remarkable traveling exhibition, on loan from two of California’s most passionate and highly respected collectors, Dr. Howard and Linda Knohl. THE QUEEN’S GALLERY addresses the steady increase in the recognition and respect for Victorian artists. The collection features over 60 outstanding masterpieces created by some of the finest 19th century Victorian artists, many of them members of the Royal Academy. The exhibition provides the opportunity to view a striking work of art by James Sant, official portrait artist to Queen Victoria, as well as a rare preliminary sketch by Edward Burne-Jones. Also featured in the collection are paintings by the illustrious Sir Lawrence Alma Tadema, and a highly detailed panorama of Victorian society by the prolific William Powell Frith. Featured alongside the paintings are more than 400 exquisite decorative art objects: embellished weapons, fascinating walking sticks, an array of matchsafes, rare first edition books, bronze statues, ivory sculptures, and so much more. Each of the objects on display provides a window into this significant period in history, and collectively delivers a rich mix of visual stimulation, narrative intrigue and social commentary. Visitors can relive Britain's battlefield blunder in the legendary 19th century Tennyson poem "Charge of the Light Brigade" while immersing themselves in a detailed painting illustrating the illustrious suicidal charge. Alongside Tennyson's pounding verse and Hillingford's rousing battle scene, guests will marvel over the weapons used in the Queen's service to build Britain's massive Imperial Empire. “The Queen’s Gallery is an immersion in the culture and history of the British Empire, an exploration of how artists responded to and was influenced by the upheaval that took place during the beginning of the industrial world,” explains Knohl Curator Carol Eastman. “The Victorian Era is a fascinating story, and no one tells it better than The Queen's Gallery. We offer visitors a chance to see fabulous treasures from the 19th century, as well as enter the world that gives them meaning.” The Queen’s Gallery is divided into six thematic categories: The room called “A Delightful Distraction” explores the enchanting genre of fairy painting and fantasy art, a welcomed diversion from the dreariness of industrialized life. The emergence of romantic symphonies, operas, and ballets motivated a number of Victorian artists, as did ancient myth and medieval legend. William T. Maud’s The Ride of the Valkyries, a larger-than-life painting inspired by ancient Norse mythology and Wagner's best-known opera, typifies the merging of the arts and the fantasy subjects so enjoyed by the Victorians “Merging Art & Literature” examines the close affiliation between artist and author, painter and poet - pairing many of the images with the literary subjects that inspired them. For example, after admiring a rare edition of the 1685 Fourth Folio of William Shakespeare, viewers can loose themselves in Frederick Howard Michael’s enchanting image of Titania, drawn from Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night's Dream. “Life, Leisure and Landscape” charts the carefree existence of the privileged upper class, while “Behind Closed Doors” showcases paintings that reflect the unprecedented questioning of traditional religious doctrines. “The Irresistible Lure of the East” features detailed images of the “Orient” by artists seeking an escape from the industrialized cities of nineteenth century England. Finally, “The Empire on Which the Sun Never Sets” highlights the many military conflicts that took place during this era, illustrating the profound impact that Imperial expansion had on 19th century culture.

Mission: The Knohl's Traveling Exhibitions were developed, designed, and built to attract a wide range of visitors - the educated museum audience, families looking for entertainment, and school groups interested in education. The exhibit includes biographies, informative essays, and commentary on individual works, offering viewers the chance to extend their knowledge of this passionate time in the history of art and this significant time in the history of the world.

The Knohl Collection and the International ARC Salon are pleased to announce the winners of The 2014/2015 Knohl Collection Award for History or Literature Inspired Art. With approximately 2,500 entries by over 1,050 extremely talented artists, the judges had a very difficult time choosing the winners.

This year the $5,000 prize for The Knohl Collection Award for History or Literature Inspired Art was equally divided between two works: Know Not Thy Pending Fate by Christina Grace Mastrangelo and The Ship of Fools by Carl Dobsky.

When asked about how history or literature inspired their work, both artists had very insightful answers. Christina Grace Mastrangelo replied: "It evolved after years of studying humanist literature, and the personal effect of love and loss through death and heartbreak. When I first moved to Florence in 2006, I was struck by the intensity of the history of the city. It lead me to study the great minds of Florentine history: I read about Michelangelo's struggles with his work and with God; I read about Leonardo's ideas and inventions and discovered the great minds of Boccaccio, Machiavelli, and Dante. After living there only a short time, the idea for this work came to me in a dream. The scene was a group of figures stretching up into the sky, away from darkness and pain, and up into the light, towards serenity, harmony and connectedness. It was only later that I made the connection to Dante's Divine Comedy, as the vision changed to include the unknown realm of the afterlife and an internal search for an answer." Carl Dobsky, artist of The Ship of Fools, said: "The theme for the work has been around for a long time with some crediting it as beginning in the time of Plato. It kind of comes into it's own in the 15th century with a book by Sebastian Brant titled The Ship of Fools which became the inspiration for works by the likes of Hieronymous Bosch and others. It usually depicts a boat without a pilot filled with deranged people who are oblivious to their situation. In some cases, it has been used as social commentary. I wanted to take these elements but give the theme a personal interpretation."

Alexander the Great Receiving the Family of Darius III - 331 BC, by François-Xavier Fabre (French 1766 – 1837) illustrates Alexander the Great and his friend Hephaestion approaching the family of Darius III, the defeated Persian Emperor, after Alexander's victory in the decisive Battle of Issus. Cowper’s The Anatomy of Humane Bodies | The Knohl Collection

In his anatomical illustrations, Gerard De Lairesse sets ordinary household objects next to dramatically posed skeletons and drapes macabre cut-up torsos with delicate linens. He peels back the soft flesh to reveal raw cartilage, fibrous ligaments, and an unborn fetus. Although he portrays his figures in an emotional, almost tender manner, he reminds his audience of the grisly reality of the dissection room by inserting pins, ropes, and props used to position body parts; he even goes so far as to place a fly inside an open abdomen.

Gerard De Lairesse – The Circumcision
De Lairesse (1640 – 1711) was a Dutch Golden Age painter, a draughtsman, book illustrator, theatrical set designer, skilled anatomical illustrator, lecturer, writer, theoretician, and the most celebrated Dutch painter in the years following the death of Rembrandt. As one of the most popular painters in Amsterdam, De Lairesse was frequently hired to adorn the interiors of government buildings and homes of wealthy Amsterdam businessmen. Many of his lavish trompe l'oeil ceilings and wall paintings still exist in the original buildings where they were painted. Early in his career, De Lairesse was highly influenced by Rembrandt; but according to the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s online catalog, he later described Rembrandt’s work as “liquid mud on the canvas.”

In 1685, Govard Bidloo (1649–1713), an anatomist and surgeon, published Anatomia Humani Corporis using 105 of De Lairesse's anatomical drawings. Bidloo's publishers later sold 300 copies of the unbound plates to William Cowper, another skilled surgeon, who proceeded to write a new English text to accompany De Lairesse's drawings. The book, The Anatomy of the Humane Bodies, was published in 1698 using Cowper's name, with no mention of De Lairesse. The Knohl's Antiquarian Book Collection includes William Cowper's rare and highly coveted The Anatomy of the Humane Bodies embellished with De Lairesse's highly detailed drawings.

De Lairesse's anatomical drawings reach far beyond the functional didactic purpose of the scientific treatise. Most notable is De Lairesse's poetic attempt to contrast the raw and disturbing dissected body parts with the soft flesh surrounding them. He also conveys a wry sense of humor by placing dissected figures in ordinary nightclothes and objects such as a book, a jar, a crawling fly in, near, or on the dissected limb or torso. At the time of publication the book was one of the most authoritative and comprehensive atlases of human anatomy, celebrated for its superior text and anatomical drawings.

De Lairesse suffered from congenital syphilis, which caused him to go blind in 1690. The misformed nose is clearly visible on the portrait that Rembrandt painted of him around 1665. After losing his sight, De Lairesse was forced to give up painting and focused instead on lecturing and writing on art. His diagnosis of congenital syphilis is based almost entirely on a portrait by Rembrandt, which hangs in the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Yet, as he painted De Lairesse's portrait, Rembrandt had no idea he was labeling his younger colleague with syphilis - at that time the characteristic facial deformities of late congenital syphilis were not recognized and would remain unknown for another 200 years.

Works by De Lairesse are on display at many museums around the world, including the Louvre in Paris, the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City, the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., the National Portrait Gallery and Tate Gallery in London, and the Cleveland Museum of Art. A preliminary sketch of The Circumcision hangs in the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

Pocket match safes were designed to safely hold early friction matches, which were known to ignite unexpectedly when carried loosely in the pocket or purse. Although these handy containers are rarely seen today, from 1850 to 1915 match safes were extremely popular.Today, as was true in their heyday, the most coveted match safes are those created by brilliant designers like Tiffany, Gorham, and Fabergé. The Knohl Collection, with approximately 21,000 pieces, currently has the largest known accumulation of match safes in the world.
