Raffle tickets are now on sale for $2.00 for this beautiful [queen size] quilt, made and donated to the Amelia Historical Society by Claire Whitaker and is on display for viewing in the entrance to the Jackson Building. Tickets can be purchased in the Historical Society's office on a Monday or Friday, or from any Board member. Call the office if you need to make other arrangements. 804.561.3180.

The Amelia County Historical Society invites patrons of county history and the general public to attend its Saturday, September 15, 2018, open house in commemoration of the group’s sixtieth anniversary. The event, which will occur from 1-3 p.m. at the Jackson Building at 16501 Court Street in the Court House village, will feature county artifacts and memorabilia on hand from the period since the Society’s 1958 inception, as well as guides knowledgeable in the museum’s exhibits. Among these are Civil War, World War I/II, and Amelia veterans displays, county rocks and minerals, Native American artifacts, medical instruments, and other showcased items of local civic history. Visitors and guest may also find maps, books, collections, posters, and other documentation of interest. The Society will serve light refreshments.

AMELIA DAY BAKE SALE;
We invite all those who enjoy baking to consider donating a goodie to help support the Amelia County Historical Society. If you spread the word to your baking friends and neighbors - we will be most appreciative. Free containers are available at the Jackson Building on Mondays and Fridays and we provide wrapping services if you drop off your baked goods between 9am - 5pm on Friday, May 11th or from 8am - 9am Sat. May 12, 2018. In lieu of a baked item, please consider a cash donation as an excellent way to show your appreciation.

OPEN MEMBERSHIP MEETING

The Amelia County Historical Society will conduct its annual open membership meeting on Sunday, December 3, 2017, at 2:00 p.m. in the Amelia County Administration Building (16360 Dunn Street), main conference room. All Society members and the general public are welcome to attend. The meeting will include the final scheduled Board of Directors meeting for the year. Its business agenda will focus on the unveiling of nominations for, and election of, unfilled officer positions.

The meeting will also include guest speaker Jim Godburn, historian at Sailor’s Creek Historical Battlefield State Park. Mr. Godburn will address the history of the Hillsman House, one of the key locations in the April 1865 Battles of Sailors Creek.

Hillsman House to Be Discussed – Jim Godburn, historian at Sailor’s Creek Historical Battlefield State Park, in Amelia, will address the 2:00 p.m. open membership meeting of the Amelia County Historical Society on December 3, 2017. His topic will be the Hillsman House (shown here), a Pre-Revolutionary War structure that served as a field hospital and key staging point for the Union Army during the last major battle in Virginia of the Civil War. All Society members and the general public are encouraged to attend. The Society will serve light refreshments.

The Amelia County Historical Society will show the works of Amelia artists and photographers. We urge each of you to add new artists to our existing list. The only requirement for entry is that the artist must be a present or past resident of Amelia County. Please help us expand our base of artists – new works are of great interest!

The show will open with a reception on Friday, October 20, 2017 from 6pm – 8pm in the Administration Building.
There will be no charge this year but donations will be greatly appreciated. Art works will be received on Thurs. October 19th from 12 noon -4:00 pm and Fri. The Amelia Historical Society in conjunction with the James Allen Chapter DAR will hold an open meeting on Saturday, March 19, 11:00 am, at the Jackson Building, 16501 Church Street, Amelia Courthouse, VA.
Diane Langston, James Allen Registrar and Family Tree DNA project administrator, will present a program on DNA tests for genealogy. Learn what DNA tests are available and what they can tell you about your ancestry. Handouts will be provided.
