The Amberg Museum Complex, regaling the town's unique granite history, includes the main museum building, the 1894 original town hall, the Heritage House, the 1884 train depot, and the Cedarville flagstop. About the Amberg Museum

The Amberg Historical Society formed in 1983 from the efforts of the Amberg Centennial Committee. These twelve committee members became the founding members of the Soc

iety. The Town of Amberg offered the use of the abandoned fire department building and soon it was filled with artifacts donated by interested community members. The Amberg Museum is owned and partly maintained by the Town of Amberg while the Society preserves the collection and operates the museum complex. In an agreement with the town, the Society does not charge any entrance fees. It operates entirely on donations, membership fees, and fund raisers. In 2008 the society became a nonprofit corporation and became an affiliate with the Wisconsin Historical Society. The Society always welcomes new members and volunteers. Membership is $5 a year or $10 per family. Meetings are held at the Amberg Community Center beginning the second Monday in April at 6:30 P.M. You do not need to be a member to volunteer. Come join the fun! More information is found at our website: www.amberghistory.org.

Almost Completed

The original bridge crossing the Menominee River near the Chaulk Hills power dam in White Rapids had cement railings with lighted pillars. The Amberg Historical Society is reconstructing a part of the railing complete with the lamp post and light. All that is left to complete the project is place the pillar on top of the base and mount a working light on top. The project should be completed this fall.

Fall Quarry Tour

The fall quarry tour will be held on Saturday, October 21 at 10 AM. Visitors will see two quarries, the Pike River quarry and the State quarry. The Pike River quarry was run by the Pike River Quarry Company which began in 1896 and continued operation until about 1927 shipping quality granite around the world. The State quarry, also known as Camp Amberg since it was run by state prisoners, supplied building stones for numerous state buildings. The tour will begin at the Amberg museum complex and then travel to the quarries. You must provide your own means of travel. There is no cost for the tour. Donations are accepted to help our nonprofit organization.

Quilt Display Finished

Eight quilts, some previously stored in a closet, can now be seen on the new quilt rack in the display room of the Old Town Hall. Our collection includes a few more quilts and other sewing notions and crafts.

The museum is free and run by volunteers. We completely depend upon donations to keep it running. This is new display is the result of both donations and volunteers in action.

We are in need of more volunteers. Would you consider? The volunteers always have a fun time working together. Guides are rotated on a monthly basis. Volunteers who help with projects are usually involved in the spring, summer, and fall. Workdays are usually scheduled at our monthly meetings, April - October.

New Exhibits for 2023

Each year the museum has updated exhibits. This year the revolving exhibit in the main museum building provides photographs and information about the Chalk Hills Girl Scout Camp that is now closed. The Amberg Organizations exhibit is now the Amberg Community exhibit with enlarged photos and focused displays with defining labels.

There is always a lot to do exploring the six buildings of the museum complex and the featured outdoor display of one of the quarry derricks. Come and touch, hear, and learn the interesting history one of the Midwest's major producers of granite.

Who was "Black Sam?"

This has been a popular topic of discussion lately. Sam Cowgill was born in Ohio and came to Amberg after 1910. He built a log house and raised corn, potatoes, and cabbage on his farm. He also worked at a sawmill in Norway, Michigan, the Pike River Quarry, and at the Pentoga logging camp near Crystal Falls. He was a fisherman, hunter, and trapper. How did he get the nickname "Black Sam? Some believe it was because of his black hair and beard. Others think it may have been from his dark, ruddy skin. He was neither a Black man or Indian as some suppose. Black Sam road bears his name since he was an early settler who lived on that road for nearly 40 years.

The Amberg Museum has a file with more information plus his snow shoes and some photographs. Come and get the rest of the story. The museum is open Saturdays 1-4 PM and will be open with extended hours at the Amberg Firemen's Picnic on September 3. After that the museum closes for the season.

Summer Project in Progress

Volunteers have been busy at work repairing leaks and replacing rotten wood, scraping paint on siding, and encasing window sills with aluminum to protect from further damage. It is an ongoing project that hopefully will be completed next year when the 1894 building will be repainted.

Another project completed was the sealing of the cement pad by the Amberg Depot. Lots to do and always looking for volunteers.

The bottom of the depot was also scraped, primed, and painted. This was one of several projects due to be completed this summer and fall.

Can you guess what it is? It is hanging from the ceiling above the exhibit. It was used to unload wagons of hay. There was a large fork attached to the end. Ropes attached to it were pulled to lift the hay into the mow of the barn. Find out more when the museum opens this summer.
