International Life Cast Museum

Mission Statement: “To advance knowledge, understanding and appreciation of the human experience, our unique collection of life casts brings visitors face to face with the giants of history, science and celebrity.” Goals: Presenting life masks, artifacts and stories A Lasting Impression: At the age of twelve, during a visit to Washington, D.C., I was impressed by the towering, larger-than-life statues honoring our nation's history. Although nowhere near the scale of these monuments, one single object absorbed my total attention and made a lasting impression. This artifact, on display inside a small museum in Ford's Theatre, was a life cast made directly from the face of President Abraham Lincoln himself. (continued on the website www.ilcmuseum.org)

This is the death mask of the King of Sweden, Gustav III. Born in 1746, in Stockholm, Gustav III was the eldest son of King Adolph Frederick and Louisa Ulrika of Prussia. She was a sister of Frederick the Great of Prussia. His reign as King was from 1771 until his death by assassination in 1792. A few months after his coronation in 1772, Gustav seized power from the government in a coup d'état known as the Swedish Revolution. The coup brought an end to the Age of Liberty and pushed for restoration of royal autocracy, which was officially established by the Union and Security Act in 1789. Gustav’s expenditure of considerable public funds on cultural ventures contributed to his controversial reign. Influenced by the writings of Voltaire, Gustav legalized Catholic and Jewish presence in Sweden. After the French Revolution, Gustav focused on the alliance of monarchs with the intention of crushing the insurrection and reinstating his French counterpart, Louis XVI. On March 16, 1792, Gustav was mortally wounded by a gunshot during a masquerade ball at the Stockholm Opera House, as part of a noblist-parliamentary coup attempt. The disgruntled nobleman named Jakob Johan Anckarström produced a cavalry pistol loaded with two balls, nails and assorted scraps of lead and iron. Anckarström thrusted the muzzle against Gustav’s back, and pulled the trigger. The King survived the impact and lived another 19 days before he died due to an infection. The transition of power placed the throne in the hands of Gustav’s brother, Duke Carl until Gustav’s son assumed the throne in 1796. King Gustav III was a vigorous patron of the arts. His reign was known as the Gustavian, or Swedish Enlightenment. He founded the Opera House and the Swedish Academy in 1786, both in Stockholm. His original death mask still resides at the Swedish Academy. #guesswho #reveal #gustavIII #swedish #kingofsweden #kinggustavIII #gustavian #enlightenment #historymystery #monarch #royalty #greatguessing #plaster #deathmask #deathcast #ilcmuseum #ILCM

This is the life cast of actor John Hurt. Nobody’s HURTing for great answers in this crowd! Born in Chesterfield, Derbyshire, England, in 1940, John Vincent Hurt faced a tough road in childhood with his desire to become an actor. At age 12, his school headmaster laughed at him, when he shared his dream. The headmaster responded, “Well, you may be alright in school plays but you wouldn’t stand a chance in the profession.” John’s father was a Church of England clergyman who moved the family to a vicarage across from a movie theater. Unfortunately, he didn’t want his children to watch any films as these were frowned upon. His mother, however, felt that performing on the stage was an acceptable art form and took John regularly to Cleethorpes, to see productions at the repertory theater. In 1960, John earned a scholarship to attend The Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, a program that ran for two years. Soon after, his film career debuted with the 1962 British romantic drama ‘The Wild and the Willing.’ It was the start of career that spanned six decades and 130 films, four of which had a posthumous release. Some of the highlights in his film career included: ‘A Man for All Seasons,’ ‘Midnight Express,’ ‘Alien,’ ‘The Elephant Man,’ ‘Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull,’ and three of the Harry Potter films. Throughout his career, John received critical acclaim and many awards for his acting on stage, screen and television. Director David Lynch stated he was, “simply the greatest actor in the world.” In 2004, John was made a Commander of the Order of the British Empire. In 2012, he received the Lifetime Achievement BAFTA Award in recognition of his “outstanding contribution to cinema.” On July 17, 2015, John was knighted at Windsor Castle by Queen Elizabeth II for his services to drama. Not bad for a kid who didn’t stand a chance of making in the profession! #guesswho #reveal #johnhurt #thewildandthewilling #actor #british #harrypotterfilms #awardwinner #knighted #greatguessing #theelephantman #midnightexpress #museumcollection #plaster #lifecast #lifemask #ilcmuseum #ILCM

This is a life cast of John Zacherle. ‘The Cool Ghoul,’ as he was nicknamed by Dick Clark, or Zacherley, was one of the first of the late night television hosts of horror movie programs. In character as a crypt-keeping undertaker with a diabolic laugh, he broadcasted out of stations in Philadelphia and New York in the late 1950s and early ‘60s. His first exposure on TV was in 1954, in the western series ‘Action in the Afternoon.’ He played several roles (including the undertaker) in a program that aired live from the studio and backlot of WCAU channel 10 in Philadelphia. Three years later, he was hosting WCAU’s ‘Shock Theater.’ Also marketed as ‘Shock!,’ this program centered around 52 pre-1948 classic horror movies from Universal Studios released for TV syndication in Oct. 1957. The package included ‘Frankenstein,’ ‘The Mummy,’ ‘The Invisible Man,’ and ‘The Wolf Man,’ to name a few. John hosted the late night show as the character ‘Roland,’ wearing his long black undertaker’s coat. During this time, John, who was a close colleague of ‘American Bandstand’ host Dick Clark, helped fill in as the host of ‘Bandstand’ during road touring shows. In 1958, with the help of Dick, John recorded ‘Dinner with Drac,’ for Cameo Records. The song broke the top ten nationally. That later inspired John to release several LPs, which mixed novelty songs with horror sound effects. John went on to host another late night program out of WABC-TV in New York, using the same format as ‘Shock Theater.’ His Roland character became known as Zacherley and the show was called ‘Zacherley at Large.’ In 1963, John hosted ‘Chiller Theater’ on WPIX-TV, Channel 11 in New York, followed by a teenage dance show called ‘Disc-O-Teen.’ Always in character as ‘Zacherley,’ the dance show incorporated the teens in skits. The bands that it attracted included ‘The Young Rascals,’ ‘The Lovin’ Spoonful,’ and ‘The Doors.’ In the 1960’s and ‘70s, Zacherley hosted several rock concerts in New York City’s Central Park and appeared at Fillmore East to introduce ‘The Grateful Dead.’ He continued to entertain on radio and television through the mid-90s. #guesswho #reveal #johnzacherle #thecoolghoul #zacherley #museumcollection #ilcmuseum #ILCM

This is the death mask of John Dillinger. The FBI’s first public enemy No. 1., under J. Edgar Hoover. Leading up to his death, this gangster was closely followed by the media. Since it was the Depression-era, Dillinger found great notoriety stylizing his criminal actions to show himself as a Robin Hood figure. By the time he was gunned down outside the Biograph Theater in Chicago on July 22, 1934, he was famous. There was an opportunistic crowd of morbid onlookers that gathered around him as he lay face down in the alley. They used their newspapers, bags, handkerchiefs and clothing to soak up the blood that had pooled around the body to keep or potentially sell as a souvenir from that historic event. When he was eventually laid out on a slab at the Cook County morgue, thousands came to view the body over a day and a half. During that time, an autopsy was performed, followed by four death masks created by different parties. One of those people was Harold May of the Reliance Dental Supply Company, who followed through on his intention, which was to send a copy of the death mask to J. Edgar Hoover with a letter marketing his new molding/sculpting product as a potential law-enforcement tool. Hoover appreciated the gift and as a result had copies made of the mask for any police department that requested it, until the demand got so great that the offer came to an end. Although many copies probably exist due to May connecting with the FBI director, May did not profit from this. May’s ulterior plan was to sell copies of Dillinger’s face at Chicago’s Century of Progress fair. Unfortunately, he learned that to do this, he would need the Dillinger family’s permission. Knowing this scheme had hit a dead end, he took out his frustration by destroying the original mold during pistol practice. #reveal #johndillinger #notorious #mostwanted #publicenemy #fbimostwanted #gangster #jedgarhoover #criminal #crime #shot #shotdown #greatguessing #museumcollection #deathmask #deathcast #ilcmuseum #ILCM

This is a life cast of Brian Hugh Warner, also known by his stage name Marilyn Manson. Horrifically good guessing by many on this one! Born in 1969, Brian and guitarist Scott Putesky cofounded, the rock band ‘Marilyn Manson & the Spooky Kids.’ The group name later shortened to ‘Marilyn Manson.’ The band originally formed while Brian was working towards a degree in journalism at Broward College, in Florida. He was writing music articles for the South Florida lifestyle magazine ‘25th Parallel.’ When the group came together, Brian and Scott decided that each member adopted a stage name. It was representative of a central concept; the dichotomy of good and evil always intertwined together. The stage names combined the first name of a female sex symbol and the surname of a serial killer. Brian took on the name Marilyn Manson for Marilyn Monroe and Charles Manson. Scott became Daisy Berkowitz for Daisy Duke from the TV show ‘Dukes of Hazzard’ and serial killer David Berkowitz and bassist Brian Tutunick became Olivia Newton Bundy for singer Olivia Newton-John and serial killer Ted Bundy. Over time, additional band members included: Brad Stewart a.k.a. Gidget Gein; Stephen Bier a.k.a. Madonna Wayne Gacy and Fred Streithorst a.k.a. Sara Lee Lucas. The band elevated its status by signing on to a record deal with Trent Reznor’s ‘Nothing Records’ label, they also toured as the front band to Reznor’s industrial rock band ‘Nine Inch Nails.’ The live performances for ‘Marilyn Manson’ were considered obscene and offensive at a level that had three U.S. states passing legislation that banned the group from playing at state-owned venues. In contrast, the heavy metal band developed a massive following, with two number one albums and sales exceeding 50 million records worldwide. They have also been nominated for four Grammy Awards over the years. #guesswho #reveal #marilynmanson #brianhughwarner #band #musician #marilynmansonandthespookykids #famous #celebrity #greatguessing #nineinchnails #grammyawardnominee #scottputesky #dukesofhazzard #tgif #museumcollection #plaster #lifemask #lifecast #ilcmuseum #ILCM

This is the death mask of Maximilien Robespierre. Nice detective work by many on the guessing front! Born in 1758, in Artois, France, Maximilien François Marie Isidore de Robespierre lived a short life of 36 years, but managed to become one of the most influential figures of the French Revolution. Although he lost both of his parents early on, he followed in his father’s footsteps to become a lawyer, and practiced in France. Robespierre was an advocate for the poor and spoke out through his writing. The commoners understood his position, and elected him to represent them as a deputy of the third estate. The first and second estates were clergy and aristocracy, the third was the common people of France. In 1789, the king summoned the Estates-General. In his position as deputy, Robespierre traveled to Paris with the intention of improving the lives of the common people. Soon after joining the Estates General, members of the third estate broke away and created the National Assembly, of which Robespierre was an outspoken member. The French Revolution followed soon after. Robespierre became known as a radical who wanted the people to take over the government and overthrow the monarchy. He joined the Jacobins Club and became the leader of the radical ‘Mountain’ group in the Assembly. In 1793, he led the Committee of Public Safety, which in turn ran the government. He became a powerful voice in France. His strategy with the Revolution was to obliterate the opposition. It became known as the ‘Reign of Terror.’ Anyone who opposed the revolutionary government was arrested and/or executed by guillotine. Within a year, 16,000 people lost their heads. The revolutionary leaders realized the bloodshed was too much and turned on Robespierre. He was arrested, and on July 28, 1794, was executed by guillotine. An hour after his head rolled into the basket, Madame Tussaud of the famed wax museum was ordered to make a death mask. She reluctantly obeyed their request. A wax impression from the original plaster cast is still displayed in her museum to this day. #reveal #robespierre #maximilienrobespierre #reignofterror #frenchrevolution #deathmask #deathcast #ilcmuseum #ILCM

This is a cast of Grady Stiles III’s hand. Nice guessing by many on this one! Grady comes from a family with a long history of Ectrodactyly, which is the deficiency or absence of one or more central digits of the hand or foot. This congenital disorder traced back to 1805 in Grady’s family, sometimes skipping a generation. This split hand or foot malformation is sometimes described as claw-like. Grady’s father, Grady Stiles Jr., was known as ‘lobster boy,’ who joined his father, Grady Sr., at age seven as a sideshow attraction in a traveling carnival. Grady Jr., was an alcoholic and was abusive to his first family that consisted of two daughters. He murdered his daughter Donna’s fiancé the night before her wedding! He openly admitted his guilt, and was given 15 years’ probation, since no state institution was equipped to deal with him. Grady Jr. then married a second time, and his wife gave birth to another child with the ‘lobster syndrome,’ named Grady Stiles III, whose hand cast is shown here. Grady Jr. sadly continued to terrorize his family and threatened to kill them all. To put an end to the madness, the family had him executed with a shot to the back of the head. Since that dark time in 1992, Grady III has grown into adulthood and like his family before him, continues to showcase his malformation as a public attraction. As of 2016, it was reported that he had fallen in love with one of his co-stars of the Venice Beach Freak show in Los Angeles, Jessa Olmstead, who refers to herself as the ‘bearded lady.’ Grady III has taken on the title once embraced by his father, ‘lobster boy.’ Jessa and Grady are shown here from the 2016 article. #guesswho #reveal #lobsterboy #gradystilesIII #venicebeachfreakshow #beardedlady #Ectrodactyly #famous #performer #lobstersyndrome #celebrity #greatguessing #museumcollection #plaster #lifecast #ilcmuseum #ILCM
