International Life Cast Museum

Mission Statement: “To advance knowledge, understanding and appreciation of the human experience, our unique collection of life casts brings visitors face to face with the giants of history, science and celebrity.” Goals: Presenting life masks, artifacts and stories A Lasting Impression: At the age of twelve, during a visit to Washington, D.C., I was impressed by the towering, larger-than-life statues honoring our nation's history. Although nowhere near the scale of these monuments, one single object absorbed my total attention and made a lasting impression. This artifact, on display inside a small museum in Ford's Theatre, was a life cast made directly from the face of President Abraham Lincoln himself. (continued on the website www.ilcmuseum.org)

This is David Letterman's life cast. Born in 1947, David Michael Letterman’s inspiration for making people laugh came from his father Harry, whose ability to tell a great joke made him the life of any party. Dave inherited those genes. He was voted 'Class Smart Alec' by his peers at Broad Ripple High School. His career path always intertwined with his sense of humor. Starting out as a weatherman in Indianapolis, he once congratulated a tropical storm for being upgraded to a hurricane and predicted hail the size of canned hams. Inspired by the idea of becoming a comedy writer, Dave moved to Los Angeles in 1975 and landed a job writing jokes for Jimmie Walker’s TV show ‘Good Times.’ Then he created his own standup routines, hosted or appeared on game shows and acted on a variety of TV shows, including Mary Tyler Moore’s ‘Mary,’ and Robin William’s ‘Mork & Mindy.’ That exposure caught the attention of ‘The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson.’ Johnny loved Dave’s dry sarcastic humor, and made him a regular guest and then a frequent guest host. Over the years, he guest-hosted 51 times. In 1982, Dave began his long run as a late night talk show host. Specifically, his two shows on NBC and CBS ran for 33 years or 6,028 episodes. That streak surpassed his friend and mentor Johnny Carson, who was on NBC for 30 years. Dave’s last episode was on May 20, 2015. In the end, he reflected on the critical praise he received, he had 67 Emmy Award nominations over the years, and won 12 times. Dave is currently hosting a talk show on Netflix called ‘My Next Guess Needs No Introduction with David Letterman.’ Outside of hosting his own shows, Dave created his own production company, Worldwide Pants. The company produced ‘Everybody Loves Raymond,’ ‘The Late Late Show,’ ‘Ed,’ ‘The Bonnie Hunt Show’ and his own show. One light side note to Dave’s career...in 1980, he screen tested for the lead in the film ‘Airplane!’ the role eventually went to Robert Hays. #reveal #davidletterman #talkshowhost #comedian #famous #worldwidepants #weatherman #funnyman #goodhumor #latenighthost #mynextguessneedsnointroduction #museumcollection #plaster #lifemask #lifecast #ilcmuseum #ILCM

This is a life cast of actor Bill Murray. Born in 1950, in Wilmette, Illinois, William James Murray is the fifth of nine children. Three of Bill’s siblings are actors. They are John, Joel and Brian Doyle-Murray. The only film that the four appeared in together was the 1988 Christmas comedy ‘Scrooged.’ All six of the boys in the family co-own the ‘Murray Bros. Caddyshack Restaurant’ at the World Golf Village in St. Augustine, Florida, which is the home of the World Golf Hall of Fame. Bill and most of his siblings were caddies growing up. Bill paid for his Loyola Academy tuition from that job. His father died when he was seventeen. Through his brother Brian’s connection, Bill found work with the Chicago improvisational comedy troupe ‘The Second City.’ In 1974, fellow comedian John Belushi convinced Bill to move to New York City and become a player on ‘The National Lampoon Radio Hour.’ The show ran for one year. Along with John and Bill, the show featured his brother Brian, Chevy Chase, Gilda Radner and Harold Ramis. In 1975, Bill worked in an Off-Broadway show based on one of the Lampoon routines. This immediately led to his TV debut as a cast member of ‘Saturday Night Live with Howard Cosell.’ The show debuted at the same time as another variety show titled ‘NBC’s Saturday Night.’ Howard’s show lasted one season. Soon after, Bill joined the other show, which officially became ‘NBC’s Saturday Night Live.’ He replaced Chevy Chase who left the show after one season. Bill worked alongside Laraine Newman, John Belushi, Jane Curtin, Gilda Radner, Garrett Morris and Dan Aykroyd. After the third season, Bill took on his first starring role in a feature film, the Canadian comedy ‘Meatballs.’ To date, Bill has appeared in 51 comedy films, which include: ‘Caddyshack,’ ‘Stripes,’ ‘Tootsie,’ ‘Ghostbusters,’ ‘What about Bob?’ and ‘Groundhog Day’ to name a few. Among his dramatic films, his favorite is ‘Lost in Translation.’ In this role he received critical acclaim earning a BAFTA Award, a Golden Globe Award and a nomination for the Academy Award for Best Actor. #reveal #billmurray #actor #famous #caddyshack #caddyshackrestaurant #golf #tootsie #whataboutbob #stripes #ghostbusters #baftaaward #goldenglobe #groundhogday #bestactor #awardwinner #museumcollection #plaster #lifecast #lifemask #ilcmuseum #ILCM

This is Chris Farley's life cast. Born in 1964, Christopher Crosby Farley first flexed his comedic muscles at the Ark Improv Theatre in Madison, Wisconsin. Then he moved to Chicago to join the Improv Olympic theater, followed by Chicago’s Second City Theatre. In the Spring of 1990, at the age of 26, Chris hit the national spotlight when he joined the cast of NBC’s Saturday Night Live, along with Chris Rock. They joined forces with Adam Sandler, Rob Schneider and David Spade, and became known as the 'Bad Boys of SNL.' During his five year stint on the show, Chris also appeared in the comedic films, 'Wayne’s World,' 'Coneheads,' 'Airheads' and 'Billy Madison.' When he was released from his contract with SNL, Chris wanted to focus on making more films. Unfortunately he was constantly challenged with health issues related to his lifestyle. In the last few years of his life, he sought treatment 17 times for drug abuse and obesity, but sadly succumbed to a drug overdose at the age of 33. One of the last projects Chris worked on was the voice for the title character in the animated film ‘Shrek.’ He had recorded 80 to 90% of the dialogue at the time of his death. Mike Myers, who is also an alumni of SNL, stepped in and took over the role. Strangely enough in retrospect, Chris followed the same path as John Belushi, who was also part of Chicago’s Second City, SNL and acting in films, before tragically dying from an overdose at the age of 33. #chrisfarley #reveal #famous #comedian #funnyman #humor #comedy #celebrity #diedyoung #rip #gonetoosoon #snl #badboysofsnl #waynesworld #coneheads #airheads #billymadison #christophercrosbyfarley #shrek #greatguessing #museumcollection #plaster #lifecast #lifemask #ilcmuseum #ILCM

This rather stern looking life cast is actually Mr. Warmth, Don Rickles. Anyone who saw Donald Jay Rickles perform knew that he was the king of ‘insult comedy’, but that was not always the case. In 1948, two years after being honorably discharged from the U.S. Navy, having served in WWII, Don had aspirations of being a dramatic actor. He studied at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts. Some of his classmates were Grace Kelly, Jason Robards and Anne Bancroft. After his education, the acting work was lean, so he began to perform standup comedy in clubs. Over time he realized that his audiences enjoyed him heckling the hecklers in the crowd more than his prepared material, so he incorporated that into his act. In the early 50’s, he endearingly referred to the ill-mannered audience members as ‘hockey pucks.’ Although known for his comedy, Don also took on serious roles in movies. His film debut was in 1958, in ‘Run Silent, Run Deep.’ He worked alongside Clark Gable and Burt Lancaster. Another memorable role was in ‘Kelly’s Heroes,’ costarring with Clint Eastwood, Donald Sutherland, Carroll O’Connor and Telly Savalas. He hosted his own television shows, and was the guest host for ‘The Tonight Show’ during Johnny Carson’s era, more than 100 times. Throughout it all, his standup act, which earned him the name, ‘The Merchant of Venom,’ was his most popular gig, whether a headliner in Vegas or a grand performance at President Regan’s Inauguration, he never failed to insult his audience members. Don entertained right up until his death on April 6, 2017, he was 90-years-young! #donrickles #comedian #comedy #standup #entertainer #insultcomic #usnavy #wwII #runsilentrundeep #kellysheroes #thetonightshow #themerchantofvenom #donaldjayrickles #museumcollection #plaster #lifecast #lifemask #ilcmuseum #ILCM

This is a life cast of Eddie Murphy. Born in 1961, Edward Regan Murphy was flexing his comedic chops at an early age. Inspired by Richard Pryor, Peter Sellers and Redd Foxx, he began writing and performing his own acts at around age 15. Four years later, on November 22, 1980, Eddie makes his first appearance on the TV show, ‘Saturday Night Live.’ 1980 was a rough year for the cast members of SNL, and by the end of the season, the only players who weren’t fired were Joe Piscopo and Eddie. On Dec. 11, 1982, to coincide with the release of Eddie’s motion picture debut in ’48 Hrs,’ his costar Nick Nolte was lined up to host SNL. Eddie, who was still a cast member, had to fill in for Nolte who became ill at the last minute. That put Eddie in his own category, and he became the only person to host the show while still a cast member. Eddie relished the moment, and opened the show with, “Live from New York, it’s the Eddie Murphy Show!” During that time, Eddie’s love for standup comedy routines emerged in various forms. An HBO TV special concert in 1983, titled ‘Eddie Murphy – Delirious,’ a live album in 1984, ‘Eddie Murphy: Comedian’ that won a Grammy for Best Comedy Recording, and the comedy concert film, ‘Eddie Murphy Raw’ which was released in 1987 and eventually grossed $50 million at the box office. Although it was not a monumental success, Eddie’s directorial film debut, in 1989, with ‘Harlem Nights,’ brought his life full circle. It allowed him to cast, direct and star alongside two of his childhood comedy heroes Pryor and Foxx. Eddie’s talent for impersonations in his routines eventually found its way into animated film, when worked as a voice actor for Donkey in the ‘Shrek’ series and the Chinese dragon Mushu in ‘Mulan.’ Over the years, Eddie’s 40 movies (mostly comedies) have grossed close to $7 Billion worldwide. On October 18, 2015, Eddie was awarded with the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor at the Kennedy Center in Washington, DC. #reveal #eddiemurphy #edwardreganmurphy #comedian #actor #director #voiceactor #donkeyshrek #harlemnights #mushumulan #snl #tbt #eddiemurphyraw #museumcollection #lifecast #lifemask #ilcmuseum #ILCM

This is a life cast of Rodney Dangerfield. Born Jacob Cohen in 1921, comedy came naturally to Rodney at an early age. Unfortunately, his need to bring laughter came from a dark place as he tried to counter the negativity from his antisemitic teachers and affluent peers. In his teens, he started creating standup routines and changed his name to ‘Jack Roy.’ However, nine years and several side jobs later, he gave up show business. Driven to make people laugh, he returned to standup in 1962. Looking for a fresh start, he changed his stage-name once again. An owner of one of the clubs he worked in, suggested the name ‘Rodney Dangerfield’ after hearing it used by Ricky Nelson in an episode of the TV show, ‘The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet.’ He agreed but kept ‘Jack Roy’ as his legal name for the rest of his life. Rodney got his first big break on ‘The Ed Sullivan Show,’ of which he went on for another 15 times. He was also a frequent visitor on ‘The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson’ making 70 appearances over the years. During that time he developed his, “I don’t get no respect” routine. He opened a comedy club in Manhattan in the early 70s bearing his name, ‘Dangerfield,’ and gave many unknown comedians the forum to break into the business. Some of them included Jim Carrey, Jerry Seinfeld, Adam Sandler and Roseanne Barr. Rodney found success acting in films as well, including: ‘Easy Money,’ ‘Caddyshack’ and ‘Back to School’ among others. His only dramatic performance was in ‘Natural Born Killer.’ Another highlight was winning a Grammy Award for Best Comedy Recording for, ‘No Respect’ in 1980. Towards the end of his career when the Smithsonian asked Rodney for his trademark white shirt and red tie for their permanent display, he remarked to the curator, ”I have a feeling you're going to use this to clean Lindbergh’s plane.” Never one to give up any forum for a good laugh, on his tombstone he had engraved “Rodney Dangerfield, There goes the neighborhood.” #reveal #rodneydangerfield #comedian #jackroy #jokes #standup #funny #humor #theedsullivanshow #funnyman #famous #jacobcohen #museumcollection #plaster #lifecast #lifemask #ilcmuseum #ILCM

This is a life cast of Cheech Marin. Interesting comparisons on the guessing front with Roosevelt, Gleason, Welles, Churchill, Powell, Cleveland, Conrad and Mr. Brimley. Born in 1946, Richard Anthony Marin grew up in Los Angeles, CA. He launched his acting career and teamed up with Tommy Chong during the 70’s and 80’s as the stoner-hippie comedic duo known as Cheech and Chong. They created eight comedy albums and smoked their way through seven feature films together. Ironically, during that time, Cheech’s father was a Los Angeles police officer. During a 2017 NPR interview, Cheech shared the story of the origin of his nickname which is derived from ‘chicharrón’ a fried pork skin snack. "I came home from the hospital, I was like a couple days old or something, my uncle came over and he looked in the crib and he said (in Spanish), 'Ay, parece un chicharrón.' Looks like a little chicharrón, you know?" After Cheech and Chong disbanded in 1985, Cheech changed his focus to television. His first appearance was in 1987, in episode one of ‘The Tracey Ullman Show.’ He has made over 40 guest appearances on a variety of shows like: ‘Tales of the Crypt;’ ‘Married… With Children;’ ‘The Simpsons;’ ‘Grey’s Anatomy;’ ‘Lost’ and ‘Sesame Street.’ His TV series include: ‘Judging Amy;’ ‘The Golden Palace;’ and ‘Nash Bridges.’ ‘Bridges’ was a police show, where he starred alongside Don Johnson as Insp. Joe Dominguez for five years, from 1996-2001. To date, Cheech has appeared in over 70 films. Many of them were voiceovers including: ‘Banzai’ in ‘The Lion King;’ ‘Ramone’ in ‘Cars,’ and ‘the corrections officer’ in ‘Coco.’ Outside of the entertainment business, Cheech has developed the finest private collection of Chicano art in the United States. Much of the collection went on a 12-city tour during 2001-2007, breaking attendance records in major art museums across the country. #cheechmarin #cheech #cheechandchong #stonerhumor #actor #cars #coco #banzai #lionking #entertainer #chicano #tbt #chicanoart #lifemask #lifecast #museumcollection #ilcmuseum #ILCM

Lots of wonderful life masks made for film,TV and from history, I have a few in my collection. All the more sad that in their long, long careers that the 3 Stooges never had their life masks created. The budget conscience Harry Cohen, head of Columbia would not o-k this for them, as they used floppy dummies for quick jump cuts from falls back to the actors. This process became a known and accepted bit of their shorts, and does give a certain crude charm when watching as they try to match the dummies landings. All at the lost of history/collectors, denied these comic giants their ILCM place of honor! y

Thanks.
I've liked this page for many years, but the website still says that the museum isn't built yet. Is there a timetable on this at all?
Where are you located? The link to your website doesn't work... would love to visit. Thanks!
Sherman is the sole reason the American Bison almost became extinct. After the Civil War he practiced his "total war" strategy against the Native Americans.
I would love to come visit someday! Where are you located?

Love this page! I did one a few weeks ago in silicone. Got too excited to see the finished product so it didn't come out so well, but next pour should go a lot better. Now my husband tells everyone he keeps his wife's head in the garage.
