SOTA docents brought art to life last Sunday for a special Halloween-themed family event “Mystery at the Museum”. Our youngest visitors had a spooky good time! Docents were: Mary Jo Gonsiorowski as The Bean Eater, Arjana Etchason as Artemisia, Molly Faust as St. Margaret and the Dragon, and Cecily Traynor as Portrait of Kate Lewis. #artcomesalive #museumdoppleganger #mysteryatthemuseum

Art inspires and our collection inspired these costumes. Happy Halloween from the Allentown Art Museum!

Summer vacations may be ending but there is still time to take a trip. Pick up The Paragon Hotel by Lyndsay Faye and travel back in time to the age of jazz and speakeasies. Then come out on October 3rd from 11 am to 3 pm to meet the author herself at the 7th Annual Luncheon With The Authors. Ms. Faye will be joined by fellow acclaimed writers, Juliet Lapidos (Talent) and Christopher J. Yates (Grist Mill Road) at the event at the Lehigh Country Club as they sign books, answer questions, and participate in a panel discussion. Sponsored by the Society of the Arts, the proceeds from the event will support educational programming at the Allentown Art Museum. Tickets are limited and can be found at Sotapa.org. Get yours now!

The Paragon Hotel by Lyndsay Faye

Fasten your seatbelt and get ready for a wild ride into the time of Prohibition – from the jazz-filled clubs of Harlem to sleepy Portland, Oregon. While The Paragon Hotel is a stunning work of historical fiction that is primarily about inequality and power struggles, it also delves into friendships that defy color lines and gender norms. Superbly written, this tale explores racism, violence, and extremist groups in America in the 1920's.

Don't miss your chance to meet author Christopher J. Yates! He will discuss and answer questions about his newest book, Grist Mill Road, at the 7th Annual Luncheon With The Authors. Yates will be joined by two other acclaimed writers, Juliet Lapidos and Lyndsay Faye at the event on October 3rd at the Lehigh Country Club. Sponsored by the Society of the Arts, the proceeds support educational programming at the Allentown Art Museum. For tickets & further information please visit the events page at sotapa.org. Grist Mill Road
by Christopher J. Yates

Grist Mill Road is a mesmerizing thriller that will have you in its grip from the very first page. The year is 1982 and three young friends—Patrick, Matthew, and Hannah—are bound together by a terrible and seemingly senseless crime. A compelling tale of love, rage, fear and guilt, this is a harrowing novel that’s perfect for readers looking for a psychological suspense story with a literary bent.

For a good summer read try this book and then meet Theresa Anne Fowler at Luncheon With The Authors on Oct. 3.

A Well-Behaved Woman: A Novel of the Vanderbilts by Therese Anne Fowler

A fascinating, fictionalized biography of a fiercely strong and influential woman who was so much more than her married name would imply. As a result o the Civil War and its aftermath, Alva Smith was nearly destitute before she married William Vanderbilt in 1875. She transformed herself into a Grand dame, bucking conventions of the day to support women's suffrage, back charitable causes, helm construction of nine mansions, and shepherd the once-shunned Vanderbilt family up the highest societal rungs.

Excellent day at the Allentown Art Museum!
Thank you SOTA Docents for bringing Art to life!

Today, docents from the Society of the Arts - Lehigh Valley brought our artworks to life by dressing up as the subjects depicted and literally telling their stories during "Art Comes Alive!"

Here are the works of art that were featured, along with the names of volunteers who brought them to life:

“The Standard Bearer” by Dosso Dossi; Sally Vickner
Franz Kline’s “Lehighton”: Dee Eng;
“Ann Penn Allen”: Cecily Traynor;
“Untitled” by Keith Haring: Carol Shiner Wilson read book “The Boy Who Just Kept Drawing”. Children were also invited to write their own story titled “The __ Who Just Kept _____.” Mary Jo Gonsiorowski and Barbara Sharma will be coordinating this activity.

From Muhlenberg College, Henri Reiss-NaVarre played the guitar.

Also, Bonnie Baca greeted visitors dressed as an old-fashioned museum director, complete with a top hat, monocle, bow tie, very official name tag, and a suit!

Yesterday, Monday January 21 the museum once again pulled out all the stops to celebrate Martin Luther King Day. There were art activities for kids and the entire family, a performance by ventriloquist “Docta Gel”, a showing of the film “Freedom Riders”, a performance by Troupe Da Da African Dance and Drum Ensemble and finally performances by Carl Hancock Rux, Toshi Reagon and Will Calhoun who presented memorable music and a riveting discussion. Of course there were many SOTA volunteers participating in these various events like assisting with the art projects, directing traffic, and providing docent insights into the Carrie Mae Weems exhibit currently on view. It was a day of learning, experiencing, watching, singing, dancing, and viewing all to honor the legacy of Dr. King. The many museum visitors, SOTA volunteers, and museum staff members participated with one another to make it a perfect event.

Allentown’s own Deborah Heiligman penned our nonfiction selection, Vincent and Theo: The Van Gogh Brothers for this year’s Luncheon with the Authors. Deborah grew up in Allentown and attended William Allen High School before going on to study at Brown University. She currently lives in New York City where she is an award winning author of books for children and teens. She is the recipient of awards such as the Michael L Pritz Award, YALSA Award for Excellence in Nonfiction for Young Adults and was also a National Book Award finalist. Vincent and Theo: The Van Gogh Brothers, while intended for an older teen audience, was read with delight by our art savvy readers. She created this thoughtful and intimate account of the relationship between artist Vincent Van Gogh and his art dealer brother Theo through her extensive research of the brothers’ correspondence. It is the thoroughly enjoyable yet bittersweet story of the devotion between the brothers. It is a must read for all, especially those attending Luncheon with the Authors on October 4, where you will have the opportunity to meet Deborah and learn about her writing experiences.

There are just a few tickets left so if you intend to purchase one go to www.sotapa.org to purchase tickets and for full details about the event. Don’t wait another day!

If you have not already finished this one, get busy reading “This Could Hurt: A Novel”, before the Luncheon with the Authors on October 4. This is the fourth book by Jillian Medoff, a graduate of Barnard College and New York University. Along with writing novels, Jillian also has a successful career in management consulting and corporate communications. She combined her writing skills and in-depth knowledge of the corporate workplace to produce this LWTA selection, which captures the pattern of comedy and tragedy in office life and provides a hilarious and tender look into workforce struggles during the 2008 financial crisis.

There is still time to finish the three books selected for the 2018 Luncheon with the Authors. Check out the complete details of the books, authors and the event by going to www.sotapa.org. Tickets sales are brisk so make sure to purchase yours before the deadline on September 27. We anticipate another sold out event so don’t delay!

SOTA members met on a warm August evening at the beautiful home of Maryann Dattilio to discuss one of the books selected for this year’s Luncheon with the Authors. This evening it was “This Could Hurt”, a novel by Jillian Medoff about life following the economic crash of 2008. The author describes the impacts on the Human Resource staff of a mid-sized company in New York City by examining an array of personalities with intelligence and compassion as they negotiate their work and personal lives. The book discussion was stimulating, interesting, and entertaining.

There is still time to purchase tickets to Luncheon with the Authors by checking out our event page on Facebook or by going to www.sotapa.org. The event is scheduled for October 4, 2018 at the Lehigh Country Club. We hope to see you there.
