Alexandria Commission on HIV and AIDS The Alexandria Commission on HIV/AIDS provides City Council and the public with current information regarding HIV/AIDS and promotes educational programs on HIV/AIDS awareness, treatment, and prevention.

Commission on HIV/AIDS Description: The Commission advises City Council in the formulation and implementation of public policy on the treatment of AIDS and prevention of the spread of HIV, promotes citizen participation in the formulation of such policy, provides Council and the public with current information regarding AIDS and HIV, and promotes educational programs on AIDS/HIV awareness, treatment & prevention. The Commission meets on the third Monday of the month at 7:00 p.m. Approximately three hours per month are required of Commission members. General information

The Commission was developed in response to a spike in Alexandria's HIV/AIDS rate. The city has the highest HIV/AIDS rate in Northern Virginia -- almost twice as high as Arlington County and more than 7 times as high as Fairfax County. Alexandria’s infection rate is also roughly three times above the state rate.
