The Fund For Alexandria's Child ...Helping Foster Children Enjoy Experiences Others Take for Granted.
The Fund for Alexandria's Child helps children in foster care and those at risk of abuse or neglect to experience the richness of life through such activities as dance, art or karate lessons, summer camping, school field trips, Scouting and team sports. Because of the generosity of our hometown neighbors, we can proudly say that Alexandrians are a community "taking care of our own."

Our partner in spreading joy Worthdays is coordinating an opportunity to provide Easter baskets to children ion foster care here in Alexandria. Please let us know if you are interested in supporting this project!

We are excited to introduce another opportunity in both RVA & NOVA to infuse normalcy and joy into the lives of those impacted by the foster care system in Virginia!

It has become a tradition on Easter morning, even for some who may not associate the day with the religious holiday, to wake up to a basket of goodies. This is one thing that is often missed for kids in foster care, especially those in group homes or treatment centers. This is one more opportunity for us to show kids in foster care that they have not been forgotten. It’s provides normalcy for those whose tradition on this day has always been to receive an Easter basket. It’s one more opportunity for social workers to infuse some joy into their time with that young person they are serving.

We have two separate groups who are kicking off this project with us and to who we are super grateful - Bon View School & HandsOn Greater Richmond! We are opening up this project to anyone else that would like to donate a basket, too. If that might be you, or you know of a group who would be interesting in donating one (or more!), please check out the information below (and tag anyone who might want to join in on the fun!).

The large majority of baskets will be gifted to teenagers aged middle school to 18+, with only a small number needed for infants (of teens in foster care), preschoolers and elementary aged children. Please consider this when thinking of who you might create a basket for!

Kids in foster care are just like any other kid or teenager so they will appreciate any of the things the average child or teenager would! Pinterest is full of ideas but here are some top ideas of things to include:

candy
snacks
baseball hats
toiletries
sunglasses
nail polish
makeup
journals
flip flops
jewelry
ear buds
water bottle
card games
Nike socks
art supplies
gift cards

Easter baskets being donated will be received March 24-30th) at our drop off locations that can be found here: https://bit.ly/2ESjdzp. We have an additional RVA drop off location in Midlothian that can be shared by emailing [email protected]. We are unable to accept baskets after the 30th. Please note the 30th is a Saturday and only one drop off location is open on Saturdays. Please make arrangements to drop off by 3/29 unless you are delivering to our RVA Crossroads Art Center location!) If your group plans to donate a large number of baskets, please contact us to discuss the best plan for delivery! Baskets will be gifted to young people throughout the month of April when their social workers visit with them.

Because we will be coordinating the collection and delivery of many baskets, it is strongly suggested that you use a wrap to contain all of the items in the basket. We also encourage you to be creative and use other “baskets” such as makeup or toiletry bags, small plastic totes, purse or cinch bags, etc!

Please DO NOT include any items that could be considered dangerous or sharp as some of the children receiving the baskets reside in treatment centers and are unable to have these items.

Please cut out and attach one of our ID tags to each basket donated to ensure your basket is gifted to just the right child or young person! Please include this tag on the outside of the basket/bag/box. If there are any special notes about your basket, please include on this tag. For example, if you create a ‘non-candy’ basket, we’d love to know that in case there is a child that is unable to receive candy/sugar!

A printable document with all of the information in this post and the ID tags can be found here: https://bit.ly/2XG00bv

Because Easter is considered a religious holiday, the social workers who are knowledgeable about each child and in charge of their care will determine whether it is appropriate to gift that child a basket. It is important to our organization that we are respectful of each child’s individual religious views. The agencies we work with have expressed an interest in receiving baskets and are excited about this additional opportunity to provide joy for the young people they serve!

If you have any questions about this project, please feel free to email Caroline at [email protected]. General questions that would be helpful for other people to have an answer to can be posted below!

If you are able to donate a basket or more, we would love for you to comment below to let us know that! This will not serve as an official count but will allow more people to see this post, resulting in more baskets donated! 🎉

Our completely volunteer led and supported organization provides birthday boxes for young people in our local foster care communities who otherwise will not be celebrated for these special days in their life! Please consider whether this is your month to help by creating a box for one of the young people listed below. You can learn more about the process of creating a birthday box by downloading our ‘Birthday Box Guide’ located here: http://bit.ly/2jlu9u0. We are a 501(c)(3) and a tax receipt can be provided for your donation! This is an amazing opportunity for groups or families to work on together! Read more about birthday boxes here: https://www.worthdays.org/birthday-box-1/

You may wonder why we have birthdays of young people 18 and over. These are almost always kids who have aged out of foster care and typically have very minimal, if any, support and are trying to navigate the world alone. These young people are voluntarily receiving foster care services. If there is anyone out there who needs a reminder of their worth, it’s typically these kids!

These boxes will need to be delivered to our drop off locations by Feb 23rd (or earlier). This is a Saturday and our only location open on Saturday is the Crossroads Art Center location. Birthday boxes being dropped off at all other locations will need to be delivered by Feb 22nd!

Kids Need Families Like Yours: Foster-Adopt Recruitment

The role of foster parent is not an easy one. Foster parenting is a team effort dedicated to providing for the safety and well-being of our community’s most vulnerable children. It requires patience, selflessness and sacrificial love. Every year the Department of Community and Human Services (DCHS) recognizes a foster family who goes above and beyond in loving and serving.

This year we recognize Mr. and Mrs. Intagliata. Congratulations to the Intagliata family! We thank you for your service to children and the community.

Would you like to meet this amazing duo? Join us as we recognize them on June 8th at the Up, Up, and Away Gala! https://www.501auctions.com/fosteringthefuture

The Intagliata Family has been honored as the 2018 Foster Parents of the Year for the City of Alexandria.

Like many foster parents, the Intagliatas opened their home and hearts to provide care to vulnerable children. As a school psychologist and a special education teacher, the Intagliatas fostered two male teens that were eventually reunited with their families. They began fostering a young lady and are now her permanent foster family. They are always open to learning new ways to help her prepare for adulthood and through the establishment of trust they have built a lifelong connection.

Congratulations to the Intagliata family! Thank you for your commitment to the youth in your care and your service to children across the region.
