The Fund For Alexandria's Child

The Fund For Alexandria's Child ...Helping Foster Children Enjoy Experiences Others Take for Granted.
The Fund for Alexandria's Child helps children in foster care and those at risk of abuse or neglect to experience the richness of life through such activities as dance, art or karate lessons, summer camping, school field trips, Scouting and team sports. Because of the generosity of our hometown neighbors, we can proudly say that Alexandrians are a community "taking care of our own."

What was it like for you? What did your graduation look like?Hundreds (or maybe thousands) of your peers, in caps and gowns, seated on a football field?A home full of friends and relatives, celebrating your achievement and discussing what's next? Grabbing that diploma, turning that tassel and breathing a huge sigh of happiness and relief?

The Class of 2020 won't have any of this.

But that doesn't mean they can't have joy. This doesn't mean they can't be proud. This certainly doesn't mean we cannot celebrate them.

We honor our ten 2020 graduates that have reached this important milestone while also in foster care, during a global pandemic. And, we especially want to recognize the ones that beat the odds stacked firmly against them.

If you would like to leave an encouraging message for our graduates, please leave a comment below!

City of Alexandria 2020 Foster Parent of the Year

Congratulations to Mr. Venor Biggs, recognized as our City of Alexandria 2020 Foster Parent of the Year! Venor Biggs is known as a foster parent with a big heart. He provides youth with structure and expectations while giving them enriching experiences involving art, culture, travel, food, and family. He currently has two foster youth placed with him that are a part of a set of seven siblings. He has seamlessly incorporated the youthโ€™s siblings into their weekly, and often daily, activities. Thank you Mr. Biggs for all that you do for Alexandria children and families. #FosterCareMonth

Day after day, foster families give real meaning to the words home, support, and care. Fostering is an essential service, providing vulnerable children and youth with safe, stable, and nurturing care. Motherhood comes in all forms. Birth mothers, adoptive mothers, foster moms, and more. And each act of mothering takes incredible strength, love, and commitment. As we celebrate Motherโ€™s Day, we want to recognize all of the phenomenal women who mother every day, in every form. Happy Motherโ€™s Day!

Child welfare workers document the struggles of their day-to-day amid pandemic

This brief video says so much about practicing child welfare during COVID-19. The vulnerabilities of our children continue to be exacerbated by the pandemic. From school closures and economic hardships to social isolation and family confinement, the pandemic has added new stressors for families across Virginia.

Child abuse intervention experts are sounding an alarm over a spike in abuse cases during coronavirus lockdowns. CBS News' Jericka Duncan shares the accounts of some child welfare workers who recorded video diaries of the lengths they must go to meet with kids and families while observing health pre...

Thankful Thursday! A little over a week ago, we put out a call for help to our community for a tablet so that two sisters can have access to educational games while at home as a result of schools being closed because of the pandemic. As always our village answered and two tablets were delivered yesterday by their social worker. Thank you for always believing and investing in the kids we serve. You are the light in this world.

Our partner in joy, Worthdays is still continuing to spread joy even during the pandemic. This time their making sure social workers feel worthy. Here is a great way to support local restaurants and our front line social workers who are still ensuring the safety and well-being of children in Alexandria. We are sensitive to the reality that so many are unable to help during this time. If you are able to help, make a donation. Even if you canโ€™t help by donating, you certainly can by getting the word out. ๐ŸŽ‰

March was Social Work Appreciation Month and as you can imagine COVID-19 upended many plans in place to show appreciation to these essential employees. While many social workers are teleworking like the rest of the world, many are still in the field responding to reports of child abuse and neglect or meeting the needs of youth in foster care. Some are spending countless hours looking for a foster home or placement that will take in a child that just entered care. Many are consoling young people who can't see their siblings or birth parents that are no longer able to visit with their children in person. Some are faced with fewer placement options available and more children who are running away from placements because of the overwhelming uncertainty they are feeling. All of this while trying to minimize the risk to themselves and others presented by this illness. Not to mention, many experts are projecting that when COVID-19 slows, there will be a surge in child abuse cases and the need of foster homes. Social workers continue to work despite COVID to keep the children of our community safe and they deserve to know that the community is behind them!

2. Tell us below if you have a preference of which local restaurant (in the Central Virginia, James City Co or Alexandria area) you would like for us to purchase a gift card from or even just which local area you'd like your gift card to go (RVA, NOVA, JCC). We will do our very best to purchase from the restaurant you suggest as long as it easily allows us to purchase an e-gift card.

While some restaurants do require a minimum gift card, we can pool together donations to make this work. Even a $5 donation towards a coffee gift card is an amazing donation that will help us show appreciation.

We are stronger together & continue to be amazed by the generosity and kindness of our community during this time. We are certain any appreciation we can extend to these agency staff will be a ray of sunshine in an otherwise stormy time in their lives.

Help! Please spread the word we were contacted by a social worker this morning who is working with a mom with 3 kids. As a result of COVID-19 mom is now unemployed. The children are 3 months, 6, and 8. Mom has some cognitive delays and is seeking help with obtaining a tablet so that the girls can have access to educational games and electronic learning materials. We are told these children were not provided a Chromebook by ACPS. Do you have a tablet you aren't using and is in good working condition? We would love to gift it to this family.

This advise from Dr. Deborah MacNamara is so, so important for all kids but especially those in foster care who have had to question โ€˜who their adults areโ€™ in the past! This can be done no matter who the adults are - foster parents, group home staff, IL program staff, etc and should be done frequently. โค๏ธ

With graduation celebrations pending, it's more important than ever to celebrate our grads! Nationwide, only 3 percent of youth in foster care graduate high school This year, we have 10 to celebrate! We are proud of each of them and have hope for their future. Every year, they come to the celebration evening excited. The look of shock and excitement on their faces when they see all the gifts never grows old. We hope you will join us again in celebrating their graduation.

But with schools canceling classes & activities, graduation celebrations are up in the air. Now more than ever these youth need to be lifted up & celebrated for their extraordinary accomplishments.โ €

This was a tough decision to make as you know, this event serves as our major fundraiser and makes it possible to say YES to so many requests from beds to attending summer camps. Please consider supporting the children and families we serve by making a donation to provide families with access to groceries or to help cover rent for a young adult whose hours at work may have been reduced. The average age of a child in Virginia's foster care system is 8 years old.

At age 8, children are exploring more, riding bikes, undergoing growth spurts, challenging friends to a game of tag and experiencing greater independence when doing chores and completing homework. Despite these developmental milestones, children at this age still seek emotional reassurance from parents and adults. Could you fill this role for a child? Consider fostering today!
