Fun Fact Friday: The brewing industry had deep roots in Albany, dating from the earliest days of the Dutch. During the 1700s and 1800s Albany's breweries supplied ale, whiskey, and beer to the western part of the state and beyond. In 1823, one man reported that the Albany Brewery brewed 620,000 gallons of beer a year, enough to fill 45 swimming pools! The Discover Albany Visitors Center has plenty more of these fun facts for you to check out.

Albany Art Room Artist Feature of the Week: Karen Schupack

Karen is the owner of the Albany Art Room, which she created over 10 years ago. Karen works in a wide range of mediums, from large abstract oil paintings to hand built pottery. Running the Albany Art Room has given her the opportunity to explore deeply numerous art processes and materials, both as an artist and as a teacher. Karen’s interest in print making and abstraction of natural forms lead her to a style of print making, which she used in the development of the surface textural designs on these hand built stoneware vases.

Her work is on display, along with the work of the other artists, in The Discover Albany Visitors Center.

We love our home in Quackenbush Square! Local legend has it that on this day in history, Gen. Burgoyne “stopped briefly at the Quackenbush home for refreshments (provided by Quackenbush’s daughters) prior to his internment at the Schuyler Mansion.” The Quackenbush home is now our neighbors The Olde English Pub!

#OTD in 1777, British General John Burgoyne arrived at the Schuyler Mansion as the "prisoner-guest" after his surrender at Saratoga the day prior. Catharine Schuyler hosted Burgoyne and about twenty other British and German officers, among whom were the Baron and Baroness Von Riedesel and their three young daughters. Burgoyne later reported that "in that house I remained during my whole stay in Albany, with a table with more than twenty covers for me and my friends, and every other possible demonstration of hospitality."
