Purple Heart Memorial

The Purple Heart was originally established by General George Washington at Newburgh, 7 August 1782, during the War of the Revolution. The decoration was revived by the War Department on 22 February 1932, the two-hundredth anniversary of General Washington's birth, thus paying respect to his memory and recognizing his military achievements. It is awarded to persons who, wile serving in any capacity with the United States Military, are wounded in action against an enemy of the United States, or who since 6 December 1941 are killed in action, or who dies as a direct result of wounds received in action.

Headstones, Markers and Medallions - National Cemetery Administration

See the helpful advice from our friends at Northcoast Memorials "After Memorial Day, we received a lot of questions about Government Markers that the Government provides for deceased Veterans. The most important detail about the Government marker is that the Veteran must be deceased. Don't let a Cemetery tell you that you can order it ahead of time. If they do, it is not a marker paid for by the Military and is most likely built into the price of your purchase. See the attached form that is sent to the VA regarding Government Markers. Don't be fooled into buying your own marker because it includes the Government marker for someone who is still alive.
http://www.cem.va.gov/hmm/index.asp"

The VA National Cemetery Administration honors the military service of our Nation's veterans. We provide a dignified burial and lasting memorial for veterans and their eligible family members and we maintain our veterans' cemeteries as national shrines.
