The 18th Michigan was raised from men from Lenawee and Hillsdale Counties in the summer of 1862. Stationed in Tennessee throughout most of the Civil War, some of the men suffered in POW camps. Thier journey home on board the Sultana was one of the worst maritime disasters in history.
This new documentary will help shed light on one of the tragedies of the Civil War that few know about.
Hi all! This is Will writing. Sometimes the various worlds we move through collide and it makes a stronger connection. It’s happened to me recently and I wanted to share –
In 2008, I worked on a movie in Michigan with Sean Astin. He was incredibly funny and kind to work with. It’s exactly the kind of story I like to share with movie fans about some of my co-workers (movie stars).
Now I can say Sean has forged a connection to the Civil War and I’m excited for it’s upcoming release. He has joined documentary producers Mike Marshall and Mark Marshall as executive producer and narrator on the documentary “Remember the Sultana.”
Here’s their story:
“They had survived the American Civil War, the deadliest war in US history. They had survived the brutal conditions of the POW camps at Andersonville and Cahaba. Many were wounded or ill.
But finally, they were going home.
Over 2000 Union soldiers, passengers and crew were crammed aboard the steamboat Sultana, licensed to carry 376. Graft, greed, overcrowding, a poorly maintained boat, and the Mississippi River was swollen with spring snowmelt conspired together to create a disaster.
On April 27, 1865, the boat’s boilers exploded, causing the worst maritime disaster in US history. It’s time to Remember the Sultana.”
The project will release in a few weeks on iTunes and Amazon. I’ve pre-ordered a copy. Pre-orders get a few dollars off so I purchased when I could save a bit. I’m excited to see what they did!!
