Between 1957 and 1962 the cars over 200 mph at El Mirage were Lakesters and 3 Modified Roadsters, except during this time there were two High Boy Roadsters which also set records over 200 mph. The first, in May of 1958, was the Reath Automotive sponsored Burkhart and Bramer roadster at 212.24 mph at a Russetta meet driven by Howard Eichenhofer and powered by a blown 341 cu in DeSoto. Howard had been the first to exceed 200 mph in June 1957 in Brissette Bros belly tank.
The second Roadster over 200 mph at El Mirage was the Brissette Bros High Boy at 200.44 powered by a 300 cu in blown Chrysler driven by Paul Dearth.
I believe the primary reason for the difference in the speeds was the length of the course. RTA was a 1.5 mile course and SCTA was a 1.3 mile course.
Brissette Bros roadster is now owned by Tom Evans and Burkhart’s roadster became the parts car used to rebuild the Sadd, Teague and Bentley Roadster after the Return Road accident at Bonneville.

So, I’ve already discussed the first car over 200 MPH at El Mirage in June 1957 at a Russetta meet. The second car, one week later at a SCTA meet was Jim Culbert from San Diego. Jim owned CAE (Culbert Automotive Engineering) and built Sprint Car chassis and components. You might note the one week difference in time. That is because Russetta ran the week before SCTA did at that particular time. Russetta ran a 1.5 mile course length and SCTA has always run a 1.3 mile length course. Culbert ran a front wheel drive modified roadster powered by a Chrysler engine. Culbert’s car, unrestored, was at the GNRS a couple of years ago.

The third car over 200 MPH and to set a record was the modified roadster of Phil Freudiger powered by a Tom Cobb’s 255 cu in blown sbc. Phil went 204.081 MPH at a Russetta meet in May 1958. The Freudiger Family is still racing a modified roadster at El Mirage and Bonneville today.

The fourth car to run over 200 MPH and to set a record was the Summer’s Brothers blown Chrysler, rear engined modified roadster at a speed of 213.270 in June of 1958. The Summer’s Brothers went on to build the Golden Rod streamliner which would run 409.277 MPH.

The fifth car over 200 MPH and to set a record, was Tom Beatty’s belly tank lakester powered by a blown Oldsmobile at 215.311 mph at a Russetta meet in 1958. Tom’s belly tank now resides at the Henry Ford Museum Michigan

Until the next time,
Miler Mike Stewart

Good Morning Everyone,
I am Miler Mike Stewart, the Secretary/Treasurer/Historian of the El Mirage 200
MPH Club. The Club was organized in December 1974 to give recognition to those competitors who had set records over 200 MPH at El Mirage Dry Lake. In December 1974 there were 16 members.

I became a member of the Club in August of 1980, and shortly afterward I was asked by Jo Temple, wife of Bill Temple and mother of Greg Temple, if I would be interested in becoming the Sec/Treas for the Club. Bill and Jo felt it was important for that position to be filled by a Club member, and I’ve been doing it ever since.

What I hope to do with the next posts is to explain more about the Club, what we do and most all the Club’s history, and generate interest and comments in the Club and it’s long and rich history.

Hello and welcome to the official page of the El Mirage 200mph club! This will be the baby brother to the new website we are launching. We will use this as a communication forum (or blog) for current affairs with the club.

SPREAD THE WORD and invite club members, racers, and family members.

We would like to showcase members by year in the photo albums. Please submit photos of you and your vehicle with your record data (please check out the current photo album for format) so that we can make an easy-to-find database of members past and present.

Also, feel free to upload any scenic or historical photos from events at El Mirage.
