Ghost Ranch

Ghost Ranch "The skies & the land are so enormous, & the detail so precise & exquisite that wherever you are you are isolated in a glowing world between the macro, where everything is sidewise under you & over you, & the clocks stopped long ago.: -- Ansel Adams
(113)

Dinosaurs once walked the soggy wetlands that became the arid high desert of Ghost Ranch. Millions of years later Navajos and various other tribes roamed the valley. The Spaniards settled here and then came the cattle rustlers, the wranglers and the dudes. Arthur Pack, one of the country's first environmentalists, bought the Ranch and sold a little piece of it to Georgia O'Keeffe. Scientists took respite time here from the stresses of building the nuclear bomb at Los Alamos. Famous guests have included Charles Lindbergh, Ansel Adams and John Wayne. Arthur Pack and his wife Phoebe gave the Ranch to the Presbyterian Church in 1955 and even though Georgia O'Keeffe wanted the Ranch for herself she eventually became friends of the first director of Ghost Ranch, Jim Hall. The history of Ghost Ranch reads like a novel. Read more by visiting our website.

Consider joining College Staff in 2016

College Staff Applications are now being accepted.
The College Staff program is one of the oldest traditions of Ghost Ranch. Originally defined as a ‘work/study seminar’ by our first director, Rev. Jim Hall, this position provides an opportunity for you to live and work in community with the staff and instructors of Ghost Ranch to provide our guests with the summer experience of a lifetime. Many of the families that visit us during summer months have been coming here for decades! While your position will be anchored in a primary job assignment (i. e. youth programming, library, hospitality, etc.), you will also engage with the kitchen, housekeeping, and welcome center staff to assist with meals, room changeovers, and Sunday afternoon check-ins. We host between 300-450 guests each week during the summer and it takes ‘our village’ to be ready and fresh for each week.

https://www.ghostranch.org/contact/employment/college-staff-program/

We invite you to consider serving on the College Staff, and to join us in creating a larger, all-embracing definition of who we are together, within the beautiful landscape and culture of Northern New Mexico.

Join us, November 9-11, for a weekend of gratitude that will be highlighted by a Southern Plains-style gourd dance. Our host for the weekend, Merrick Tate of the Red House Clan, was born for Red Running into the Water Clan. Originally from Ts’ah Bii’kin (Inscription House), AZ, Merrick is a silversmith apprentice, feather fan maker and beadworker. This rich weekend of teaching, music and dance begins Friday with a talking circle to introduce the history, process and etiquette for the ceremony. The dance itself unfolds across Saturday afternoon and evening.

Your Support of Ghost Ranch is Important - Ghost Ranch

Ghost Ranch needs your support. Our fiscal year ends on October 31, 2018. Much like a college or university, Ghost Ranch fees only cover 77% of the operating costs to maintain and provide. Help us meet our goal to raise the remaining 23%. The funds support the continued opportunities for guests to have transformational experiences; they maintain and protect 21,000 acres of property, and ensure the historic preservation of the facilities that host so much of the Ghost Ranch story. Please read the letter from Jon Hall.

Up for bids, two original Comanche dances as depicted by Doc Tate Nevaquaya. He was given the name Joyce Lee Tate Nevaquaya when he was born in 1932 at Apache, Oklahoma. He was delivered by a physician named Dr. Joyce and the family honored the doctor by using Joyce for their son’s first name, nicknamed Doc, most likely because of his relationship to the physician. He was always known as Doc Tate. He was orphaned at age 13 and went to live with his grandparents, thus strengthening his relationship with his Comanche heritage.

During his life, Doc Tate was a teacher, Methodist lay minister, lecturer, historian, dancer, composer, singer, flutist, and painter. He received his high school diploma from the Fort Sill Indian School in Lawton, Oklahoma, and then attended Haskell Indian Institute in Lawrence, Kansas, in 1951-2.

Doc Tate was a self-taught artist, flutist, and composer and gave numerous flute and painting classes throughout the country, including such prestigious institutions as Brigham Young University and Georgetown University. He was honored with too many awards to post here, received art, music and lecture commissions beyond note, and received national and state awards. He was married and had nine children. He resided on allotted land near Apache, Oklahoma, until his death.
