Dickinson County Historical Society and Museum

Dickinson County Historical Society and Museum The Dickinson County Heritage Center is a unique collection of two in-door museums, that continues out-the-back-door where you will find actual buildings from around the county, all depicting life on the Great Plains.

We are the home of the Dickinson County Historical Society and Museum, the Museum of Independent Telephony, the 1901 C.W. Parker Carousel, and many other fantastic attractions.

CALLING ALL TEACHERS -- We are busy preparing new programs that focus on rural Kansas life for boys and girls in the early twentieth century. Plan to bring your class to step back in time and learn about "Little Ike" -- as he was known during this boyhood -- through a collaboration of IKEducation with the Dickinson County Heritage Center in Abilene, KS. In addition to touring Ike's boyhood home, students will participate in one of three hands-on programs: Play Like Ike, A Day for Everything, or Pasture to Plate. Visit www.EisenhowerFoudnation.net to learn more and book your field trip!

Another wonderful day for our pilot group. Today we were able to "Play like Ike" with the games that the Eisenhower boys would have played after their chores were done. The students were able to do laundry, and then play games that would have been played in the Eisenhower home. They were also given a lesson on C.W. Parker, the Amusement King. His carousel in Abilene is one of the oldest running carousels in the country. This program hopes to bring more than 5,000 students from all parts of the state of Kansas and beyond. We are honored to be in this collaboration with our five-star partners. Thank you to the IKEducators, the Eisenhower Foundation, the Eisenhower Presidential Museum, Library and Boyhood Home. Thanks to Mitzi Gose, Ben Ines, Leslie Hoffman, Donna Reynolds, Anna Gugler, Mary Hildebrand, Heather Adams, Robin Black and all the students that helped us pilot the program.

Day two of our IKEducation program at the Heritage Center. Students were acquainted with a lesson plan that Ike would have experienced as a student in Abilene. The students learned what an average day in the life of the Eisenhower boys would have looked like. They mended their clothes, they teamed up with a budget to buy groceries from the store.
Thanks to Mitzi Gose and the IKEducation team of educators, and thanks to all the student volunteers to help us practice for the upcoming school year.

We are excited and proud to be collaborating with the Eisenhower Foundation and the IKEducation program to bring a hands-on learning experience of the life of Dwight D. Eisenhower from 1890-1910. Thanks to the teachers and educators that helps bring the boyhood experiences of little Ike to life at the Heritage Center. We had 12 students pilot this program today, and we appreciate everyone that made this happen.
