Beachcombers strolling along the Atlantic coastline in Daytona Beach Shores hit the jackpot in early December 2022 when a mysterious object poking out of the sand was found to be the wooden remains of an old ship that apparently wrecked along the Florida coast.

It was just the sailors, the rigging, the sheets, the wheeling stars, the coursing currents and winds — and the moody elements.

At Massachusetts Maritime Academy that old simplicity is making a return to the program in the shape of the schooner Ernestina-Morrissey, a newly refurbished, two-masted tall ship with eight white sails ready to capture the wind and propel the vessel over the crests and troughs of the ocean.

The three-masted tall ship Earl of Pembroke, which starred in the film productions of Treasure Island, Alice in Wonderland and Cloud Atlas, has been towed off for demolition. The vessel was built in Sweden in 1945 as the Orion, and she was one of the last schooner-rigged sailing cargo ships constructed for use in the Baltic timber trade.

The schooner Harvey Gamage arrived Tuesday for a short stay at the Brunswick Landing Marina: https://bit.ly/3ubmtPh

The Harvey Gamage has served the past 49 years as a high school sail training vessel. The ship is 131 feet long and has 33 overnight bunks to accommodate a crew of nine and 24 students.

Public tours of the ship will be offered from noon to 5 p.m. on Dec. 3, and for visits by invitation at other times.

Far from fanciful, that was reality for a pair of students from Dalhousie and Memorial University of Newfoundland (MUN) this past summer. And it was just one stretch of a much bigger journey.

Molly Wells, a fourth-year marine biology student at Dal, and Alannah DeJong, a third-year archaeology student from MUN, spent about 10 weeks on the open seas aboard Norwegian tall ship Statsraad Lehmkuhl as part of a summer course at sea funded by the Dal-led Ocean Frontier Institute.

Trivia: The adjective groggy comes from the word grog, which was what the sailors back in the 1700's called rum diluted with water.
⠀⠀
Supposedly grog is a reference to Old Grog, which was a nickname of Edward Vernon (1684-1757), British admiral who wore a grogram cloak and who in August 1740 ordered his sailors' rum to be diluted.
⠀⠀
Today, grog is slang for any liquor. To feel groggy is to feel drunk, tipsy, weak or dazed.

The Swedish Ship Götheborg is currently in Barcelona for a maintenance stop over the winter. That means they will stay in Barcelona until March 2023, when they will continue thir voyage to Asia.
