First conference room rental with Boy Scouts of America!! The room is only 60% done. Still need to install the new floor purchased from Res-Com, the upper wall molding, new lights, new tables and chairs, and then a final paint job. There will be also be a full AV set up. But progress has been made!

Thanks for following our project, and thank you to the Boy Scout group for letting us snap a picture right when they were getting ready to sit down to eat.

Press Release regarding Hawaiian Chieftain:

The Hawaiian Chieftain has been sold and will eventually be returning to her home state of Hawai’i.

Grays Harbor Historical Seaport — who has owned Hawaiian Chieftain since 2005 — made the difficult decision to put her up for sale in 2019 and dedicate their focus to Lady Washington and the Seaport Landing waterfront development.

According to the Seaport’s Executive Director Brandi Bednarik, “We were spread too thin to take on two boat restoration projects and the Seaport Landing development. After a year of planning and working with our donors, it was determined that this was the most logical step for us, though a heartbreaking one. Many of us — especially our past crew — put thousands of hours of love and care into Chieftain, or Chiefy, as she was affectionately nicknamed.” She went on to say, “It is the bittersweet end of an era. We are excited to have found Chieftain the perfect home with Aubrey and Matt. To help ensure the Lady Washington could continue sailing and advance the Seaport Landing development, we had to acknowledge it was time to let Chieftain go somewhere where she could receive the love and attention she deserves. It was very important to the Board, staff, and crew for the Chieftain to end up in a good home with someone who would take the best care of her. We are confident that we found her such a home.”

The new owners are Aubrey and Matt Wilson. Their current mission is Chieftain’s complete restoration and COI reinstatement. After repairs, they plan to sail her to Hawai’i, where she will once again take on passengers for day sails, be available for tours and events, and offer educational programs and sail training opportunities.

Aubrey is very familiar with sailing traditionally rigged tall ships and has previously worked as a deckhand on Niagara, Tole Mour, and Roseway. Matt is . . . less familiar. He has sailed on a tall ship exactly once - on Hawaiian Chieftain with Aubrey in 2013 - but apparently it made an impression!

The Wilsons had this to say about the purchase: “Working with Grays Harbor Historical Seaport has been wonderful, and we are grateful for their support as we begin the journey to restore this beloved tall ship. We understand many people are emotionally invested in the Chieftain’s future, and a change like this can be hard, but we hope everyone will be as excited as we are about our plans.”

The project is already underway. Soon, Hawaiian Chieftain will be towed from Astoria, Oregon to Port Townsend, Washington to begin repairs. Estimated completion of the repairs is 6 months to a year after which a farewell party will take place at the Seaport Landing.

Be part of the Chieftan’s adventure by visiting sailhawaiianchieftain.com where the Wilsons will be posting updates on the restoration progress.

It's Time to Equip the Ship!
You may have seen the news that Lady Washington’s crew is arriving mid-April to put her back together after her prolonged winter maintenance. We are excited to welcome the crew back and want to get everything into shape before they set sail. This is a great opportunity for you to Equip the Ship!

Have you ever seen the bunks on Lady Washington? Well they are small. Historical ships were built for carrying as much cargo as possible, and with little thought to crew comfort. Because the shape of the bunks is so irregular, we have to use custom mattresses. As you can imagine, these mattresses don’t last forever with daily use in a marine environment.
Here is a picture of what the mattresses for the crew currently look like.

It’s definitely time to buy new. You can help equip the ship with new mattresses or one of the other items from the list below.

In addition to the mattresses, a service that Lady Washington needs is life raft inspections. The life rafts get inspected every year, and as we gear up for the season it's that time again!

Time is of the essence. Lady Washington can’t sail outside of Grays Harbor without new life rafts, and we would like to get the mattresses in place before the crew lives onboard later this May.

We need your help to make these things happen! The financial road to recovery from COVID is a long one. Please send help today by making a donation of $50 towards the new mattresses or life rafts. Any help you can give will go directly to Lady Washington and her crew.

The new issue of Currents, the GHHS newsletter, is arriving in mailboxes! In case you aren't yet on our list, the next few posts will include articles so you don't miss out. Visit www.HistoricalSeaport.org to learn more.

Director's Message:
Here is to a better 2021 and a hopeful return to our new normal.
You may have seen our email that we hit our fundraising goal for this winter. Thank you!

I hope you enjoy this newsletter which includes a spotlight on people like you, who volunteer, who donate, who find ways to support us time and time again. We couldn’t be more grateful for you.

As long as current restrictions don't change, we look forward to sailing with you in June. Lady Washington's crew gets back to work mid-April. We are excited to get back to sailing with you! We plan on having our schedule up on our website by the end of April.

We will also have a new phone number by next week, so please forgive any delays in us responding to messages as we switch over. It has become more important for us to have accessibility to the messages at more than just the home office, so our office phone is going mobile.

We still have a long road of recovery to get through, but thanks to you we got a head start. Now we wait and continue to work on the event center at Seaport Landing, the RV parking on the water, and maintenance on Lady Washington.

Thank you for not giving up on us! We look forward to sailing with you soon.

Forever Grateful,
Brandi
