--By the Reverend Alice Haynes. Have you heard? Trinity Church, Abbeville is being restored! For over two years, the congregation has worshipped in another location due to safety concerns. Initially, Sacred Heart Roman Catholic church, a block away on Church Street, opened its doors to the congregation. Then last spring, the congregation returned to the beautiful grounds of Trinity, and has been worshipping in the parish house. This is what people see on Sunday mornings as they enter the large room in the parish house at 103 Bowie Street.

It’s not what many of you remember, of course, if you’ve visited Trinity’s lovely, historic sanctuary. But the wonderful, tenacious congregation is grateful to be “home” on the grounds, giving thanks to God, breaking bread in a familiar setting, and welcoming all.
The material found online at restoretrinity.org tells the details, too many to reiterate here. But several summary points, made on the website, are worth repeating:

--Trinity, Abbeville was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1971 with statewide significance.

--Trinity was put on Preservation SC’s Places at Risk List in 2018.

--Trinity is one of the only buildings designed by George Edward Walker (1827-1863) that remain virtually unchanged.

--The building has been badly damaged by water intrusion, which has threatened the 125 foot steeple, causing it to lean.

--Beautiful stained glass windows by William Gibson adorn the sanctuary. Trinity is one of only five locations in the United States where Gibson’s work can be found, and represents the largest group of windows not restored. 160 years have taken their toll on the windows. The chancel window must be removed to be repaired and re-leaded.

--A tracker organ by noted organ maker John Baker was brought to Trinity from Charleston. Not used in 20 years, the components are now in storage boxes. This Baker organ, one of only two known to exist, will be fully restored.

Recently, South Carolina Public Radio carried an interesting, in-depth story of Trinity’s history and current situation. The program has been added to the online material through Preservation SC, and can be listened to or read.
Speaking for the congregation, I hope you will want to participate in Trinity’s restoration through your prayers and financial contributions. This beautiful church belongs to all of us in the Diocese. Our own William Porcher DuBose served as Trinity’s 2nd rector, leaving Trinity in 1871 to accept a call as Chaplain and then New Testament/Greek professor at the fledgling University of the South. History abounds.
And, if you are able, we hope most of all that you will join us for worship one Sunday! Liturgy is at 11:00, preceded by Bible study at 10:00 in the upstairs meeting room. Evening prayer is said each Wednesday at 6:00. Come to Abbeville and celebrate a church still strong in the heart of God’s mission!

Contributions may be sent to Restore Trinity, PO Box 448, Abbeville, SC 29620.

Lots of great things are happening at the McGowan House. These photos are from this weeks Press & Banner featuring articles on our restoration of the 3 cabins located behind the house. Cabin #1 and Cabin #2 date from 1857 and Cabin #3 in the photo dates from 1870. All 3 cabins are and have been undergoing major renovations all year that include roof and chimney work, replacing concrete steps with period wood steps, repairing and replacing large sections of the siding and windows, foundation work and restoration of the insides of all 3 cabins. If you get a chance, please go by and walk around the cabins and see all the great work that is taking place. Please keep in mind, these projects would not happen if it were not for our incredible donors and members. We are very appreciative of this community and all the help we receive in restoring these important pieces of Abbeville's history. Thank you to Steven Marner for his amazing work and dedication to our society!

On Friday, March 1, 2019 a tornado touched down in Abbeville that caused damage in some neighborhoods. One area hit was the historic Upper Long Cane Cemetary. We would like to share photos of the damage. There is a committee working to figure out if some markets can be repaired. As you can see from the photos, some have major damage and most likely will need to be replaced. There is no insurance that covers this type of damage. If you would like to help, please message us.
