【Third Hengshan Calligraphy Award|First International Open Call 🌏】

What if an entire museum became the space for reimagining calligraphy?
For the first time, the Hengshan Calligraphy Award is opening its call internationally.
The Third Hengshan Calligraphy Award invites artists, curators, and art collectives of all nationalities to propose a calligraphy-focused curatorial project encompassing the entire Hengshan Calligraphy Art Center (HCAC) in Taoyuan, Taiwan.
Through exhibitions, the Hengshan Calligraphy Award aims to connect diverse cultural traditions, artistic media, and techniques, while expanding the ways calligraphy can be understood, experienced, and engaged with in relation to contemporary issues.
Writing and calligraphic practices have long developed across different languages, cultures, and social contexts—each with their own forms, ideas, traditions, and ways of seeing.
By opening the award internationally, HCAC hopes to invite perspectives from across countries and cultures, including exhibition proposals engaging with calligraphy, writing-based art, and broader cultures of writing.
Bringing these perspectives together in Taiwan creates opportunities for audiences to encounter different understandings of calligraphy—and for diverse writing traditions and artistic practices to meet, exchange, and enter into dialogue.
Through these encounters, HCAC also seeks to connect artists, curators, researchers, and practices across regions, strengthening its role as a platform for calligraphic art and cultural exchange in Asia.
This is why the award goes beyond the question of “what to exhibit.” Applicants are invited to approach calligraphy through curatorial thinking and to consider how it can enter into dialogue with contemporary art, the museum space, and the issues of our time.
From curatorial narrative and spatial planning to visitor circulation and audience experience, applicants are encouraged to imagine an exhibition that unfolds across the entire museum.
Proposals may draw on different cultural traditions, artistic media, technologies, and contemporary issues. They may also explore how calligraphy can intersect with moving image, installation, performance, technology, and interdisciplinary practices.
We welcome proposals that move beyond established forms of calligraphy and bring originality, contemporary relevance, and an experimental spirit to exhibition-making.
How else can calligraphy be seen and experienced—and how might it respond to the world we live in today?
