Urbanisation serves nowadays as inspiration for a good amount of artworks which has the same topics with urbanism. A lot of artists find the phenomena discussed by urbanists interesting, problematic or at least worth to be used as a material. Design, often as an applied form, is naturally on the flow of new approaches, so designers are also deeply in the topic of new urban life. These coincidence
s made the designer of the event (Füsun Ipek, an activist and street artist herself) to bring all urban focused communities together. Urban Series is designed with the aim of making an international hub, in which creatives can think and create without borders (between art and science or countries), about the very same topic: how we try to make our lives better in big cities. We can call it a conference as it has the scientific level, but as all the topics put in highlight are to be discussed and not to be shown, there are also afternoon workshops with the visitors. In this meaning, lectures and workshops are equal, bringing lecturers and visitors together to think about the new urban phenomena of the 21st century. It is not to be a decorative surrounding for creation, but to make a real environment. Artworks are exhibited as mostly quiet, but still very important participants of Urban Series, they let the visitors immerse, they give the option of contemplation. Connected to the Istanbul Biennale, the second edition of Urban Series has the main curatorial question: how does art affect cities. We can also turn the question around: how does the urban environment influence art? Visitors have the opportunity to listen, discuss and create together for three afternoons with Hungarian, Turkish and Swiss participants from an array of fields: literature, photography and curating. Every layer of the art world is connected to the city in their own way: some use it as a space or canvas to paint on, others as inspiration or occasion for a statement. Urban Series presents a transdisciplinary range of these contemporary conjunctions.

Urban Series, konferans, workshop ve sanatı birleştirir. Kentsel dönüşüm ve şehircilik, günümüzde birçok sanat eserine de ilham vermektedir. Şehircilik uzmanların konuştukları fenomenler, sanatçıların da ilgisini çeker, onları problematik bulur ya da en azından madde olarak kullanır. Tasarım – çoğunlukla uygulanmış bir şekilde – doğal olarak yeni bakış açıların peşinde, bu yüzden tasarımcılar da yeni şehir hayatıyla derinden ilgilenmektedir. Bu tesadüfleri düşünerek etkinliğin düzenleyicisi, kendisi de aktivist ve sokak sanatçısı olan Füsun İpek kentsel dönüşümle ilgilenen tüm grupları bir araya çağırma isteğine ulaştı. Urban Series’in temel amacı, yaratıcı insanların beraber düşünebilecek ve çalışabilecek, sanat, bilim ve ülkeler arasındaki sınırları aşan uluslararası bir düşünce merkezi oluşturmasıdır. Bizi birleştiren ana fikir: bir şehri nasıl daha iyi bir yer yapabiliriz? Bilimsel tarafı da olduğu için Urban Series’e konferans da denebilir, ama bütün konuları yalnızca göstermek değil, tartışmak da istediğimiz için öğleden sonraları ziyaretçilerle beraber workshoplar yapılacak. Bu anlamda sunum ve workshoplar eşittir: sunucu ve ziyaretçileri bir araya getirerek 21. yüyzılın kent fenomeni hakkında birlikte düşünmelerini sağlar.
İstanbul Bienali’ne bağlı olarak düzenlenen Urban Series’in ikinci etkinliğinin ana küratörlük sorusu, sanatın şehirleri nasıl etkilediği. Bu soruyu şöyle de çevirebiliriz: Şehir koşulları sanatı nasıl etkiliyor? Ziyaretçilere üç akşam boyunca edebiyat, fotoğrafçılık ve kuratörlük gibi farklı alanlarda çalışan Macar, Türk ve İsviçreli konuklarımızı dinleme, onlarla tartışma ve beraber çalışma fırsatı veriyoruz. Sanat dünyasının her tabakası farklı şekillerde şehre bağlanmakta, bazıları boyamak için bir alan veya tuval olarak kullanır, diğerleri ilham veya bir açıklama fırsatı olarak. Urban Series bu çağdaş bağlaçları disiplinlerarası bir ortamda gözünüzün önüne getiriyor.
