𝗧𝗼𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗺𝗶𝘁𝘀𝘂 𝗜𝗺𝗮𝗶 was not only part of the Art Informel movement, he also played an important role in bringing its ideas from Paris to Japan.

After moving to France in 1952, Imai became immersed in the Parisian art scene and later developed a style defined by energetic brushstrokes, rich textures and vibrant colour. His works embraced the spontaneity and materiality of Art Informel while reflecting his own Japanese artistic perspective.

In 1956, Imai helped introduce Art Informel to a wider audience in Japan, contributing to an exchange of ideas between Paris and Tokyo that would influence Japanese postwar abstraction.

Before 𝗛𝗶𝘀𝗮𝗼 𝗗𝗼𝗺𝗼𝘁𝗼 became one of the major figures of Art Informel in Japan, he was trained in traditional Japanese painting.

Born into a family of artists in Kyoto, Domoto moved to Paris in 1955, where he encountered Art Informel at its height. The movement’s emphasis on freedom, gesture and material gave him a completely new way of approaching painting — but he never fully left his Japanese artistic roots behind.

Look closely at his works and you’ll see both sides come together: thick layers of oil paint, bold colours and energetic brushstrokes, balanced by an underlying sense of order and control.

Rather than simply adopting Western abstraction, Domoto made it his own. His paintings became a meeting point between Japanese tradition and postwar European abstraction, helping shape a new language for postwar Japanese art.

Our new exhibition, 𝘼𝙧𝙩 𝙄𝙣𝙛𝙤𝙧𝙢𝙚𝙡: 𝙃𝙞𝙨𝙖𝙤 𝘿𝙤𝙢𝙤𝙩𝙤 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙏𝙤𝙨𝙝𝙞𝙢𝙞𝙩𝙨𝙪 𝙄𝙢𝙖𝙞, focuses on the raw, tactile intensity of two leading masters of Art Informel in Japan, Hisao Domoto and Toshimitsu Imai. As Japan’s leading interpreters of Europe’s Art Informel (“Art Without Form”) movement, both artists challenged conventional artistic structures and constructed a new language of abstraction.

Centered on the material and gestural force of Hisao Domoto and Toshimitsu Imai’s practices, the exhibition explores how this European-originated abstract movement, coined by French critic Michel Tapié in 1950, became important in Japan through a historical lens. Emerging from the disillusionment of post WWII Europe, Art Informel rejected the rational, geometric abstraction of the era in favor of raw intuition, improvisation, and pure painterly freedom. In the 1950s, Domoto and Imai relocated to Paris, where they immersed themselves in the intellectual orbit of this movement. By bringing Eastern philosophies and aesthetics into dialogue with European Art Informel, they forged a powerful cross-cultural artistic exchange that expanded the possibilities of global abstract expression.

Over the course of this exhibition, we encountered architecture through particles, rhythm, materiality, climate, movement and time.

From inhabitable tea rooms and full-scale mockups to models and material studies, 𝗞𝗘𝗡𝗚𝗢 𝗞𝗨𝗠𝗔: “𝙈𝘼𝙆𝙀𝙍𝙐” 𝘼𝙧𝙘𝙝𝙞𝙩𝙚𝙘𝙩𝙪𝙧𝙚 — 𝙏𝙝𝙚 𝙀𝙘𝙤𝙡𝙤𝙜𝙮 𝙤𝙛 𝙍𝙝𝙮𝙩𝙝𝙢 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙋𝙖𝙧𝙩𝙞𝙘𝙡𝙚𝙨 invited us to consider how architecture might engage with the world differently through coexistence rather than dominance or control.

As the exhibition comes to a close, what remains is more than the architecture itself. It is a way of seeing that recognises rhythm in material, continuity between inside and outside and the possibilities that emerge when architecture learns how to belong.

Materials in 𝗞𝗲𝗻𝗴𝗼 𝗞𝘂𝗺𝗮’s work are often understood through sensory qualities — rough, soft, light, dense — allowing architecture to be experienced beyond the visual.

These textures are not eliminated, but re-woven into the space, giving form to an architecture that can be felt as much as it is seen.
