'[...] In other works, such as Playing Ghost, and Satyr (Alteration of Titian), music emerges as a central organising principle. Both of the figures clutch pipes, the former private and forlorn, cast in feathery purple hues, the latter intrepid, facing a beckoning clearing in the trees. In both works, falling flora seem to give shape to imagined music ringing mutely from the canvas, implying the figures’ ability to shape their surroundings to their needs. Here, it seems less that the satyrs are moving through the landscape, and more that the foliage bends to their whims.'

06/11/2023

'[...] Oliver Bak’s Songs from Below the Meadows is a painterly speculation on the classical categories of music and beauty, and the dionysian tension inherent within these. Taking imaginative departure from the allegorical, Bak’s works weave protean tapestries in which beauty and horror shift, imperceptibly.

Within the exhibition, the presence of mythological satyrs and their relationship to their utopian surroundings conceptually dictates the form of the works. Within bucolic scenes, spectral satyrs drift in and out of perception in verdant, canopied, and luminous landscapes. Posturing, reclining, revelling, or hiding in dense flora, there is an idle playfulness to them, but also an implication of a nymph-like changeability: their dual capacity for joyousness and cruelty.'

The exhibition reopens Wednesday 8th November.

Opening reception; Thursday, April 14th, 8.00 - 10.00pm

'[...] In his philosophy, Heidegger uses the term Lichtung - which translates literally to mean glade, or a clearing within a forest - as a concept in which one finds enlightenment in the space afforded by absence. In the same sense, Wang’s chiasmic canvases, bereft of the didacticism of either distinct narrative or complete abstraction, invite viewers to feel their way through the artist’s tableau, questioning perception, consciousness, and human-centric thinking.’

ADZ Gallery is pleased to present the gallery‘s first presentation of Justin de Verteuil. Titled Sweet Odour, the exhibition explores the complexities of interpersonal relationships and the tension in seeking intimacy while partially concealing one’s private feelings and emotions. The title draws attention to the darker impulses ubiquitously present in all of us, revealed in the smell of sweat, an odour which admits one’s true inclinations and fears. de Verteuil arrives at his images through an organic interplay of biographical and literary sources, guided by intuition and consideration of painterly composition.

Congratulations to The Museum of Contemporary Art on acquiring "Leaves, A Self Portrait," 1973 by the current ADZ exhibitor Nancy Youdelman.

This series of six photographs was acquired by the museum from the exhibition WOMANHOUSE which depicts the artist's body as it is progressively buried by leaves. The work raises questions about mortality, performance, and our connection to the earth. Since the early 1970s Youdelman has used photography and self-portraiture to explore memory, gender roles, and creation of identity.

Work details: Nancy Youdelman
Leaves, A Self Portrait, 1973
Series of 6 color photographs, framed in Plexiglass
