Visite a exposição de celebração do centenário de Menez no Centro de Arte Manuel de Brito, CAMB.
“Começou a pintar aos vinte e seis anos, sem ter frequentado escolas ou tido professores.
O seu amigo Ruben A., entusiasmado com a sua pintura, apresentou-a a José-Augusto França, que então dirigia a Galeria de Março. Aí Menez fez, em 1954, a sua primeira exposição.
As suas primeiras pinturas foram influenciadas pelos impressionistas. Goya, Klee, Kandinsky, Matisse, Bonnard, Picasso, Vieira da Silva e De Chirico foram os seus mestres no seu caminho tão pessoal e solitário.
Nunca dava títulos aos seus quadros, dizia que “A pintura tem de falar por si, sem necessidade de palavras.” (Maria Arlete Alves da Silva)

Visit the exhibition celebrating Menez’s centenary at Centro de Arte Manuel de Brito (CAMB).
“She was born in 1926, the daughter of an Air Force pilot and the granddaughter of President
Óscar Carmona. She married at the age of twenty and had three children.
She began painting at the age of twenty-six, without having attended art school or studied
under any teachers. Her friend Ruben A., enthusiastic about her work, introduced her to José-Augusto
França, who was then director of the Galeria de Março. It was there that Menez held her first exhibition in 1954.
Her early paintings were influenced by the Impressionists. Goya, Klee, Kandinsky, Matisse,
Bonnard, Picasso, Vieira da Silva, and De Chirico were her masters on her highly personal and solitary
artistic journey.
She never gave titles to her paintings, saying that “Painting must speak for itself, without the need for words.” (Maria Arlete Alves da Silva)
The exhibition will be on view until December 19.
