Grayson Earle (United States) – Ujazdowski Castle Centre for Contemporary Art

Grayson Earle, a new media artist and educator, is coming to a residency at the Ujazdowski Castle this September.

His work engages the site specificity of the internet, examining the ways in which traditional models of scarcity and spatialization are imposed through domain names and emergent blockchain technologies. His research also considers how the infrastructure of "the cloud" complicates binary understandings of written and oral histories.

He has worked as a professor at Oberlin College, New School, and the New York City College of Technology. He has presented his work and research at The Whitney Museum of Art, MoMA PS1, Radical Networks, the Magnum Foundation, and Open Engagement.

The residency is organized in collaboration with Akademie Schloss Solitude in Stuttgart, Germany.

The Residents magazine – the Ujazdowski Castle Centre for Contemporary Art

"Now I can say that, after all this time in quarantine, I wait; I look for people with the same concerns and questions, I wait; I look for the encounter with others and find ways to reach our doubts. Through my work and in my life, I was literally looking for new ways to interact with others." – said Amado Cabrales describing the impressions of participation in "Re–Directing: East 2020" seminar and experience of the pandemic.

The seventh issue of "The Residents" is dedicated to the "Re-Directing: East x Empathic Pedagogies" seminar held in October 2020. There you can find reflections of all seminar participants.

The words and impressions are complemented by Anna Bystrowska’s poetic portraits of the participants. Those images are the fruit of collaboration between the photographer and our guests.

An online symposium about affecting change through artist-in-residencies

Ika Sienkiewicz-Nowacka, head of artist residencies at Ujazdowski Castle will soon take part in an online symposium organised by TransArtists about affecting change through artist-in-residencies.

Nowadays one could easily recognize “care” - for today’s world, for humans and nature, as an essence and focus of artistic practice. Residence programs on the other hand worldwide continue to serve as an infrastructure and safe space to artists’ creativity, facilitating the need for space and time to reflect, connect, and engage in experiment and production. Who stand behind those institutional activities facilitating care towards the artists? In caring for residents, how might one learn to care for themselves? And what is the future of care and its role as a tool for artistic activities?
