Raul G. Isidro is a celebrated figure in Philippine modernism, known for his lyrical abstractions that draw from the colors and textures of the natural world. Born in Calbayog, Samar in 1943, Isidro graduated with a degree in Advertising from the University of Santo Tomas in 1965. He began exhibiting in the late 1960s and has since built a career defined by introspective exploration and a mastery of form, texture, and color.
His works—often inspired by sea, land, and sky—embody a quiet spirituality, where layered surfaces and gestural movements reflect both internal states and the elemental rhythms of nature. Critics have described his approach as meditative and Zen-like, bridging the material and the metaphysical.
In the 1970s, Isidro became a professor at the Philippine Women’s University, where he eventually served as Director of the School of Fine Arts. He has also participated in exhibitions and cultural exchanges in countries including the United States, Germany, India, and Spain.
Among his accolades are the Ten Outstanding Young Men (TOYM) award for art in 1979 and the Outstanding Thomasian Alumni Award in 2006. His works remain influential among generations of artists who view abstraction as a deeply personal and expressive language.
