EVSU Ormoc Holds Culminating Activity for MaReHTeS Extension Project in Brgy. Danao
Faculty members, administrative staff and students from Eastern Visayas State University (EVSU) Ormoc Campus gathered in Brgy. Danao on March 13, 2026 for the culminating activity of the Managing Reading at Home and Teaching Strategies (MaReHTeS) for Parents extension project. This activity celebrates the completion of a series of community learning sessions aimed at strengthening parents’ roles in their children’s reading development.
The event marked the successful conclusion of the MaReHTeS project, which was led by Ms. Georgina Orbeta, an initiative designed to equip parents with practical strategies for managing reading activities at home and supporting their children's literacy development. Over the course of the program, participating parents engaged in guided discussions, demonstrations, and workshops focused on effective reading techniques, home learning routines, and strategies for motivating young readers.
The culminating activity brought together representatives from Eastern Visayas State University Ormoc—including faculty members, administrators, BEED students, and staff—who actively participated in the project’s implementation and community engagement efforts. Their presence highlighted the university’s continuing commitment to strengthening partnerships with local communities through outreach and extension services.
Parents from Brgy. Danao shared their experiences and insights gained from the sessions, expressing appreciation for the practical tools and techniques introduced during the training. Many participants noted that the program helped them better understand how to guide their children in reading, create supportive learning environments at home, and develop consistent reading habits.
The speakers, Ms. Orbeta and two third year BEED students Mr. Melperd Cabahug and Ms. Jessica Castil, emphasized that parental involvement plays a critical role in improving literacy among children. Through the MaReHTeS project, organizers aimed to empower parents to become active partners in their children’s education by providing them with accessible and effective teaching strategies.
The activity also featured recognition of participating parents, interactive learning demonstrations, and the distribution of reading materials intended to support continued literacy activities at home. It also involved a workshop on how to conduct reading sessions at home.
This initiative reflects the ongoing mission of Eastern Visayas State University to extend educational support beyond the classroom and into the community. By working closely with families and local stakeholders in Brgy. Danao, the university hopes to foster sustainable literacy practices that will benefit children and their families in the long term.
The successful culmination of the project serves as a testament to the collaborative efforts between the university and the community, reinforcing the importance of community-based initiatives in promoting education and lifelong learning.
