Surrounded by rich and productive seas, Marinduque is home to a diverse array of fresh and nutritious seafood. This Nutrition Month, we take a look at the marine resources that have long nourished Marinduqueรฑo families.
The ๐๐ผ๐ฟ๐ป๐ฒ๐ฑ ๐๐ฒ๐น๐บ๐ฒ๐ ๐ฆ๐ป๐ฎ๐ถ๐น (Cassis cornuta), locally known as ๐๐๐๐๐ (๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐ in Maniwaya Island); ๐๐ต๐ถ๐ฟ๐ฎ๐ด๐ฟ๐ฎ ๐ฆ๐ฝ๐ถ๐ฑ๐ฒ๐ฟ ๐๐ผ๐ป๐ฐ๐ต (Harpago chiragra), locally known as ๐๐๐๐๐๐ are mollusks belonging to the class Gastropoda, characterized by a single shell and a muscular foot used for movement; while a ๐๐น๐๐๐ฒ๐ฑ ๐๐ถ๐ฎ๐ป๐ ๐๐น๐ฎ๐บ, locally known as ๐๐๐๐๐๐ is a mollusk belonging to the class Bivalvia, characterized by two hinged shells called โvalves." These beautifully patterned shellfish are frequently prepared as kinilaw (cured in vinegar), adobo (braised), boiled, or grilled. They are often harvested through diving, coastal foraging (panghihibasan), and nighttime foraging (pangingilaw), reflecting the traditional harvesting practices of local communities.
Other commonly consumed seafood in the island are ๐๐น๐ผ๐๐ฒ๐ฟ ๐๐ฟ๐ฎ๐ฏ (Portunus pelagicus), locally known as ๐๐๐๐๐๐ or ๐๐๐๐๐, and the ๐ข๐ฟ๐ป๐ฎ๐๐ฒ ๐ฆ๐ฝ๐ถ๐ป๐ ๐๐ผ๐ฏ๐๐๐ฒ๐ฟ (Panulirus ornatus), locally known as ๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐ (๐๐๐๐ in Maniwaya Island), These crustaceans belong to the phylum Arthropoda, which is characterized by exoskeleton and jointed appendages. They are traditionally prepared as sinigang (sour soup), buttered, or boiled.
As an essential part of Marinduqueรฑo food culture, these marine resources remind us that every Marinduqueรฑo shares the responsibility of protecting and conserving our seas to ensure a sustainable future for the province. After all, healthy plates begin with healthy seas.
