RG HABULAN’S DEMOLITION JOB

In his works, Filipino artist Guerrero “RG” Habulan (b. 1980), a Thirteen Artist Awardee of the Cultural Center of the Philippines, seamlessly blends disparate aesthetic traditions like pop art and social realism to articulate a unique visual vocabulary that is at once profoundly allegorical and refreshingly whimsical.

This untitled oil painting (c. 2015) from Habulan’s series of “symbolic mindscapes” is a discursive rendering of the contemporary condition where subjectivities are simultaneously fragile and fragmented. An elderly man sits in a squatting position, a humble signifier of status and toil in the Philippines, with his head peeled off to reveal a superfluous façade. Vibrant cubes scattered about suggest a state of becoming as a work-in-progress, meant to be solved, re-arranged or completed. Monochromatic birds likewise resonate with this over-all sense of transience.

Here, then, is where painting becomes a demolition job, a subversive project of deconstruction and reconstruction. In navigating the multi-facetedness of identities, Habulan proffers us a map with which to make sense of ourselves and our ever-changing world.
