FOUNDING OF LA LIGA FILIPINA

1892 - July 3 - 2026

Today, we commemorate the 134th founding anniversary of Dr. Jose Rizal's La Liga Filipina, established on the night of July 3, 1892, in a house along Calle Ilaya, Tondo. Conceived as a peaceful reform movement, it sought to unite Filipinos, promote mutual aid, advance education, and pursue reforms under Spanish colonial rule.

Shown below is a rare 1911 photograph of the La Liga Filipina Monument, erected in 1903, on the site where it was founded, crowned with Rizal's bust. This explains why a ladder was always seen leaning against the monument in many early photographs—it formed part of the monument's original design to remove and install Rizal's bust.
