To culminate its month-long 2026 National Heritage Month Celebration, IFSU–Hapao Campus, through its IP Resource Conservation and Community Learning Center, conducted its final activity titled “Tanud di Munpunpaot: A Training-Workshop on Carving and Furniture Making” from May 25–27, 2026.

The activity aimed to integrate traditional carving techniques with furniture-making styles, ensuring the intergenerational transfer and preservation of carving traditions among the younger generation of Hungduan.

On May 25–26, 2026, IFSU–Hapao Campus through its IP Resource Conservation and Community Learning Center conducted the training-workshop titled “Nan Pangat: Demonstration and Guided Training of Traditional Carving Techniques: Soap, Fruit, and Vegetable” as part of its month-long National Heritage Month celebration. The activity gathered elementary pupils, high school students, and college students in a meaningful learning experience centered on creativity and cultural preservation.

During the opening program, Dr. Generose S. Ognayon, Campus Executive Director, thanked the participants and emphasized the importance of preserving cultural heritage by encouraging younger generations to appreciate traditional skills and craftsmanship.

Dr. Regina G. Gano, IP Learning Center Chairperson, explained the rationale of the activity, highlighting the role of youth in sustaining the traditional woodcarving practice in Hungduan. Meanwhile, Hon. Leonardo Ognayon Jr. shared his journey in woodcarving and encouraged participants to further develop their skills as both a cultural practice and a potential livelihood.

Mr. Julio Madiwo, Mr. Earl Xyville Atolba, and Ms. Kevy M. Martin served as trainers, demonstrating carving techniques and guiding participants throughout the workshop. Participants showcased creativity and enthusiasm through their carved outputs.

Through initiatives like this, IFSU–Hapao continues to strengthen cultural appreciation and skills development among learners.//

Tonton: A Seminar-Workshop on the Genealogical Mapping of Woodcarving Lineages in Hapao was held on May 11–12, 2026, at the IFSU–Hapao Campus through the IP Resource Conservation and Community Learning Center. The activity focused on tracing the roots of woodcarving, documenting master carvers and their descendants, and preserving oral histories in the community.

A lecture on Ifugao genealogy and kinship by Dr. Regina Mendoza highlighted the importance of communities documenting and owning their culture. The seminar-workshop strengthened efforts to preserve Hungduan’s carving heritage.//

IFSU-Hapao Kicks Off National Heritage Month 2026 Through Carving Exhibition

IFSU–Hapao Campus officially launched National Heritage Month 2026 on May 4 at the IP Resource Conservation and Community Learning Center through the exhibition “Nan Paot ya nan Munpaot: An Exhibition of Carving Tradition,” highlighting Hungduan’s woodcarving as a living heritage under the theme “Roots and Horizons: Our Shared Heritage, Our Collective Future.”

The event underscored collaboration among LGUs, IFSU, carvers, and community partners in preserving indigenous knowledge, with Dr. Generose S. Ognayon emphasizing heritage as a shared responsibility and encouraging the youth to continue the craft as a living practice.

Featured carver Joseph Tayaban shared his journey of carving as both livelihood and cultural continuity, supported by reflections from Pastor Pablo Binwag and Kagawad Delmoso Tapyogon. Dr. Regina G. Gano outlined the month-long activities, including seminars and workshops, while the program culminated in the opening of an exhibit showcasing carved works, narratives, and the stories of Hungduan artisans, marking a strong and grounded start to NHM 2026.//
