IFSU-Hapao students experienced hands-on Munkiwa, an Ifugao traditional rice wine-making practice, today at the IP Community Learning Center under the guidance of Barangay Kagawad Ben Adawe and Ms. Romana Ngohayon.

The students were grouped by barangay, with each group working on their own output as they learned the traditional practice through hands-on experience.

The activity is part of the center’s continuous efforts to transfer indigenous knowledge and practices to younger generations through hands-on training and seminars.

Kina-ag Making Keeping the tradition alive!

BSA 1 students currently enrolled in the Indigenous Knowledge Systems and Practices (IKSP) subject had a hands-on learning experience on August 19, 2026, at the IP Community Learning Center as they engaged in the traditional kina-ag-making activity. This year's resource speaker was Mr. Pablo M. Cuyahon, with Mr. Jasmin Gano as trainer.

Woven from bundled rice stalks into a human-like figure, the kina-ag is more than a prop for the Punnuk. It marks the closing of the huwah, the post-harvest rituals of Hapao, Baang, and Nungulunan, and signifies the completion of another planting and harvest cycle in the Hungduan rice terraces.

𝐋𝐮𝐤 𝐥𝐮𝐤, 𝐏𝐮𝐧𝐧𝐮𝐤! Nahuwah da moy bimmoble.

The final and most visible part of Huwah, the Punnuk, commenced on August 22, 2026, at the Nunhipukana River.

The barangays of Hapao, Baang, and Nunggulunan made their way to the river from their respective routes, their loud cheers filling the air. Clad in their bright red and white native attire and dongah, they gathered at the river and were met by eager spectators along the riverbanks as they engaged in the traditional river tug-of-war, or guyyudan.

The guyyudan was followed by the dopap and uppuhan hi yahyah, continuing the traditional activities till the throwing of the kina-ag.

Visitors were also given the opportunity to experience the punnuk firsthand by joining the guyyudan and taking part in this living cultural tradition.

𝐌𝐚𝐩𝐡𝐨𝐝 𝐧𝐚𝐧 𝐚𝐩𝐠𝐮!

IFSU-Hapao Campus, through the IP Community Learning Center, joined the community in today’s baki and inum as part of the preparations for Punnuk 2026, which will take place tomorrow at the Nunhipukana River, the river confluence of Barangays Hapao, Baang, and Nungulunan.

The day began with the mumbaki’s declaration of a good bile sac following the baki, signaling that the Punnuk is ready to take place. This was followed by the inum, which began at the Dumupag’s house and continued as the community and visitors transferred, mibalin, to the succeeding houses.//

𝑳𝒆𝒕 𝒖𝒔 𝒑𝒂𝒊𝒏𝒕 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒓𝒊𝒗𝒆𝒓 𝒓𝒆𝒅 𝒐𝒏𝒄𝒆 𝒂𝒈𝒂𝒊𝒏. 🌾

𝐏𝐮𝐧𝐧𝐮𝐤 2026 is set this Saturday, August 22, at the Nunhipukana River, marking the final stage of the 𝐇𝐮𝐰𝐚𝐡 ritual.

𝐇𝐮𝐰𝐚𝐡 is a collective post-harvest ritual observed by the communities of Hapao, Baang, and Nungulunan in Hungduan, Ifugao. It formally closes the agricultural cycle and signals the beginning of a new one, expressing gratitude to the gods and ancestral forebears for the harvest and for the rice terraces inherited by the present generation.

The ritual is composed of three interconnected rites performed in succession: 𝒃𝒂𝒌𝒊, 𝒊𝒏𝒖𝒎, and 𝒑𝒖𝒏𝒏𝒖𝒌. The 𝒃𝒂𝒌𝒊 and 𝒊𝒏𝒖𝒎 will be observed on August 21 at the Dumupag’s house, the designated lead family for the harvest, leading to the much-anticipated 𝑷𝒖𝒏𝒏𝒖𝒌 on August 22.

Punnuk was inscribed in the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2015, alongside other tugging rituals from Cambodia, Korea, and Vietnam. The inscription recognizes the cultural significance of these living traditions and underscores the importance of their safeguarding, transmission, and continued practice by present and future generations.

The Punnuk Museum was honored to welcome Dr. Ricky Punzalan of the University of Michigan School of Information, a leading voice in archival repatriation and reparative connections to Philippine heritage collections.

Dr. Punzalan and the team have been at the forefront of returning photographs, including their work on Owen Tomlinson’s Photographs and materials from the Bentley Historical Library collection, as well as images and documents captured in Hungduan, Ifugao, during the American colonial period. These materials form part of the ReConnect/ReCollect: Reparative Connections to Philippine Collections project, which Dr. Punzalan co-directs with Prof Deirdre de la Cruz, in close partnership with Dr. Analyn Salvador-Amores of the University of the Philippines Baguio.

Having Dr. Punzalan walk through Punnuk Museum and engage directly with our community is a powerful reminder that cultural heritage work is never just about the past, it's about restoring dignity, memory, and connection for generations of Ifugao to come.
