Today marks the 400th year of the arrival of the image of Nuestra Señora de la Paz y Buen Viaje in the Philippine Islands.

Quietly standing at the right side of the International Shrine is an NHCP marker that tells a story many pilgrims pass by without noticing, the image was brought from Mexico to Manila in 1626 by Governor-General Juan Niño de Távora, and in 1632 was entrusted to the Jesuits for the church of Antipolo.

Four centuries later, her story continues, not only as part of our religious devotion, but also as a living piece of our shared heritage, history, and identity.

HAVE YOU SEEN THIS TOO? 👀🚶‍♂️

While walking behind Manila City Hall, I spotted a small detail along the pathway near the Liwasang Bonifacio, an accent design showing the City of Manila’s bell tower. It’s one of the capital’s most familiar landmarks, part of the neoclassical City Hall built in the late 1930s. For decades, its clock and carillon bells have marked time for Manileños, making it both practical and symbolic.

From what I’ve read, the technique used here is called debossed molding, also known as intaglio or engraved pavers. In architecture, it’s considered an accent motif, and here it highlights the bell tower itself. I’m not sure if there are other designs like this scattered around Manila, but finding this one felt like uncovering a hidden piece of heritage in the middle of the city.

It’s fascinating how even the smallest design elements can carry history.
