We are all familiar with the monuments in Waipu, one commemorating those who served in war (built originally to remember the fallen of WW1) and one remembering the migration of the Nova Scotian Scots who settled in Waipu. When World War 2 ended, the emphasis was on memorials that were of practical use to the people. In Waipu, the World War 2 memorial is in our Heritage Precinct. The rooms along the side of the Heritage School were built with the funds raised for the memorial. The rooms have had a few uses over time. When it was the Church Hall, they were Sunday School rooms. This plaque remembers the sacrifice of those who served in WW2. Today we pause to recognise and thank those brave young men and women who served and the families they left behind at home. Lest we forget.
