This is our next event coming up this Saturday (20 June) at the Heritage School. Should be very interesting!

Just a reminder that we have an event in the Heritage School this Saturday (9 May) at 2pm. We have speakers who will talk about their lived experiences of arriving in Waipu, or growing up here from the 1960s onwards.
We are also running an open day at the end of this event so that you can have a look through our various Heritage buildings.

We are all familiar with the monuments in Waipu, one commemorating those who served in war (built originally to remember the fallen of WW1) and one remembering the migration of the Nova Scotian Scots who settled in Waipu. When World War 2 ended, the emphasis was on memorials that were of practical use to the people. In Waipu, the World War 2 memorial is in our Heritage Precinct. The rooms along the side of the Heritage School were built with the funds raised for the memorial. The rooms have had a few uses over time. When it was the Church Hall, they were Sunday School rooms. This plaque remembers the sacrifice of those who served in WW2. Today we pause to recognise and thank those brave young men and women who served and the families they left behind at home. Lest we forget.

The Caledonian Park isn’t in our Heritage Precinct but we thought you might enjoy this article that Lachie wrote recently for the Mangawhai Focus newspaper.
