These medals had sat in a drawer for over 100 years until I had the privilege of mounting them. They belong to the first NZEF chaplain killed in WW1 at Gallipoli 28 August 1915. His name was William Grant (actually my great-uncle) and he died a chaplain’s death while giving aid to the wounded of both sides.

42999 Flying Officer Colin Roy Baker DFC from Palmerston North was killed on 16 April 1945 aged 22. He was the pilot of a Vickers Wellington bomber from 75 (NZ) Squadron that collided with another aircraft while approaching his home airfield after a mistake from the control tower. He had 921 hours flying time after 32 operational flights. He had previously earned his DFC while flying a Sterling minelaying aircraft.
Apparently he was ‘so keen to fly as a teenager he built a homemade glider and was towed by a brewery truck in an attempt to get lift off’.

Proud to be asked to provide a couple of miniature sets for the kids of my old Gunner mate Danny McCort who passed away early July. I never served with Danny while I was doing my 20 years in the RNZA but when I was the Curator of Vehicles and Artillery at the National Army Museum he was one of my Gunner Volunteers. Now, that’s a whole lot of other fun stories!

Just completed this frame to remember this “tankie” for his family in Taupo. WO2 Thomas Quickenden served in Italy, was wounded, was married to an Italian woman and returned to NZ (on a different ship to his wife although they both sailed, and disembarked on the same day!) His original medals have now been mounted for wear (for the first time) while replicas were used in the frame.

Another obvious example for not splitting up a medal set upon the death of a veteran. Lt Alasdair Macdonald 23/491 was awarded a Military Cross, 1914-15 Star, this British War Medal and a Victory Medal in WW1. My client only has the BWM and thinks a cousin has the others. The other medallion is the one given to school children during the 1953-54 Queen Elizabeth II NZ tour. My client’s relations owned the Kaikohe Hotel where the Royal couple had lunch during the Far North portion of their visit.

A replica set of WW1 medals for 15296 Lt Victor George Parkin. He enlisted in February 1916 aged 20 with the Otago Infantry Regiment and embarked in December 1916 to England then to France. Wounded in action with the 2nd Battalion OIR in October 1917 with wounds to his left elbow and left thigh, he was soon back at the front line. In November 1918, while doing a deception raid just prior to the capture of Le Quesnoy by the 4th Battalion Otago Regiment, he was gassed by a mustard shell and admitted to hospital. He was discharged in July 1919

A medal set finally mounted after 80 years! These belonged to NZ4214125 Flying Officer Graham George Parkin.
As a member of 489 Squadron RNZAF flying Beaufighters in a strike against shipping in Jossing Fjord in Norway, after a successful attack his aircraft (TFX RD 463/A1) collided with another Beaufighter and ditched into the sea. The crew were last seen getting out, walking along the wing and entering their dinghy. None of the crew were ever seen again and were presumed drowned. He was 22 years old and had completed 14 operational missions.
A monument was erected above the fjord and a ceremony by Norwegian locals is held every year on the anniversary of his death.
