We offer regular arts workshops for both adults, youth and children, as well as a highly regarded Schools Education programme. Set within beautiful park-like grounds alongside the Opānuku stream by Henderson Park, just a short walk from the Henderson Train Station, we are based on the New Zealand Heritage listed category 1 historic grounds of the late Corbans Winery. As one of Aotearoa’s largest thriving Arts Centres, we provide a haven for the local community to enjoy the enriching combination of arts, culture and heritage as the acting kaitiaki for one of Tāmaki Makaurau’s important historical legacies. Hunter Boyu is a designer and screen printer with 7 years of experience across commercial print factories in NZ while running his own garage setup. He runs the streetwear brand Scud Rat and previously organized the Streetwear is Dead market. He teaches screen printing from a practical, hands-on perspective - focusing on what actually works when printing your own clothing and designs.

Steve Lovett
Waterless Lithography Made Easier
⁠
Steve Lovett has a multi-decade practice emerging from printerly research. Steve teaches print technologies at Te Waka Tūhura Elam Fine Arts in the Faculty of Arts and Education. Lovett’s studio is centred on collecting and reworking images and texts to develop counter-narratives that critique power. These have taken the form of sound archives, text-based work, photo documentation, collage and most recently, performance. Lovett’s pedagogical research concerns the acquisition of various forms of literacy by ‘first in family’ students transitioning to tertiary study, developing structured approaches to knowledge and skill acquisition relevant to both theoretical learning and practical application.

Looking for the perfect way to creatively relax and ensure some “me time” during the busy run up to summer? This workshop is for you! 🧵🪡

This 6-week evening class with contemporary embroidery artist Lina Castro will explore the art of combining embroidery and felt to create beautiful, functional little objects. From needle cases to small multipurpose pouches, you’ll learn how to bring together stitch and texture to make something useful and uniquely yours!

You’ll start by learning a range of embroidery stitches and how to attach small beads to your work. Then you’ll design and create your own templates for a case or pouch made from felt, and put all your new embroidery skills together for a one-of-a-kind design.

Ceramic Light

Olivia Asher (Ngāti Tūwharetoa) is a Tāmaki Makaurau-based multidisciplinary artist and writer. Her practice explores intimacy, domestic space, containment and emotional experience through materially grounded forms. Working intuitively with materials, she approaches making as both tactile process and relational language, considering how objects can hold memory, feeling, and atmosphere. Olivia holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Te Waka Tūhura Elam School of Fine Arts and Design and has recently shown ceramic work at Objectspace Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland.

Intuitive Mixed Media is a two-day weekend workshop with resident artist Julie Moselen designed to encourage experimentation, play and a more intuitive approach to making art.

Working on a wood panel you'll explore a range of mixed media techniques and experimental approaches, allowing ideas to develop organically rather than working towards a predetermined outcome. You’ll be encouraged to let go of perfection, take creative risks and follow unexpected ideas as they emerge.

Through layering, changing, combining and responding to what happens, you'll discover how experimentation can lead to unexpected and exciting directions in your work.

No experience is necessary — just come with an open mind and a willingness to play.

Emma Smith (she/her) lives in Tāmaki Makaurau. Smith is a painter and has exhibited extensively over the last two decades. Her work is held in public and private collections. Smith is also a published writer focusing largely on painting matters. She teaches Contemporary Arts at Unitec – Te Whare Wānanga o Wairaka.

He kokonga whare e kitea, he kokonga ngākau e kore e kitea.
The corners of a house can be seen, but the corners of the heart cannot be seen.
Foregrounding the transformation of thread with uku through the artist’s unique processes, Ange materialises a sensitive expression of whakapapa, interwoven with the natural environment, cosmology and the human experience.

Kitinga bashenyi is a metaphor from my dialect Hunde that means “When the sun appeared in the evening in the middle of the forest, suddenly it disappeared and then darkness appeared. When women collect firewood for cooking, they gasp, there is no more sunlight when it is time to go back home. They suddenly found that they could not see the road to go home and get confused.”

What a turnout for our Auckland Heritage Festival event 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘖𝘭𝘪𝘷𝘦𝘴 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘝𝘪𝘯𝘦𝘴 𝘏𝘢𝘧𝘭𝘢 on Saturday! 🍇

Thank you to everyone who came along to the unveiling of our new heritage wall in the Homestead foyer, tour of the estate and talk/films in the Cellar Theatrette with Sharon Alexander Corban.

Learn screen printing from a pro! In this 3-day hands-on Summer School workshop with graphic designer and screen printer Hunter Boyu, you will learn the practical steps to set up and screen print your own designs on textiles.

The workshop will cover screen design, exposure, printing, registration, curing, and basic production. With practical guidance and troubleshooting advice along the way, the workshop is suitable for both beginners or anyone wanting to upskill to a more professional approach.

You will primarily use heat-set water-based printing inks, with the opportunity to experiment with plastisol inks to learn the difference in effect. Print onto provided calico or bring your own garments to customise in class.

Starting in the first week of Term 4 is a 4-week focused drawing class with resident artist Julie Moselen, designed for older children (9-15 years) who are ready to take their drawing seriously ✏️

Students will be taught the essential skills needed to become confident, capable drawers, with a strong focus on observation, proportion, form, perspective, light and tonal value. Through structured exercises and practical drawing projects, they’ll develop the techniques and understanding needed to draw with greater accuracy, confidence and independence.

Witipū is an exhibition by Erena Baker-Arapere, Huhana Smith, Mari Ropata-Te Hei, Rongomaiaia Te Whaiti, Terri Te Tau and Karangawai Marsh.

Witipū invites us to reconsider a term that has long been used to describe wāhine Māori who are unwavering, formidable, and unapologetically present. Rather than accepting inherited assumptions, this exhibition reclaims Witipū as an affirmation of mana, resilience, wisdom, and the many ways strength is embodied.

Across painting, sculpture, and mixed media, the artists reveal the breadth and complexity of wāhine Māori experience. Here, wāhine emerge as phases of the moon, as kaitiaki grounded in their tūrangawaewae, as holders of whakapapa and mātauranga, as leaders navigating multiple worlds, and as storytellers who reinterpret Māori narratives through the enduring lens of mana wāhine.
